Each of us can recount troubling periods of uncertainty in our lives. We may have even doubted God's goodness, plan, or presence in those moments. Yet, if we learn to see God's hand especially during those seasons, we'll be able to experience His preserving and sustaining grace anew.

Crucifying the King of Glory

On Palm Sunday, the crowds welcomed Jesus as King. By the end of the week, that same King was hanging on a cross. In this sermon from 1 Corinthians 2:8, we consider the staggering claim that the One crucified was none other than "the Lord of glory." What does the cross reveal? It exposes the blindness of the world, the depth of our sin, the surprising nature of Christ's kingship, and the greatness of God's saving love. This devotional traces the road from "Hosanna" to "It is finished," showing why the crucifixion of Jesus is not glory defeated, but glory displayed.

Undiscourageable Resolve

In Living with Undiscourageable Resolve (Acts 21:1–14), we follow Paul on the road to Jerusalem as the Spirit makes one thing clear: suffering is coming. Through the lens of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's costly faithfulness, this message asks a searching question for everyday disciples: Will we obey Christ when obedience is costly? As believers plead with Paul to choose the safer route, we learn that God's warnings often prepare us more than they redirect us. The sermon calls us to three marks of steady courage: keep following when the road is costly, listen wisely without being ruled by fear, and surrender to God's will because Jesus is worth more than safety. Rooted in the gospel of Christ crucified and risen, we're invited to trust God's goodness and take the next obedient step—come what may: "The Lord's will be done."

Palm Sunday: A Final Glimpse of Glory

Some of you may have had the neat privilege of witnessing a complete solar eclipse, such as the one we had over northern Maine on April 8, 2024. Immediately before the moon passes directly in front of the sun, completely blocking its disk, there's a bright flash of sunlight. This flash is caused by sunlight filtering through the Moon's valleys and mountains on its edge. This piercing flash called the "diamond ring" or "Baily's beads" is what you could call the final glimpse of the sun's glory before the moon covers it, and all goes dark. Palm Sunday is the incarnate Son of God's diamond ring or Baily's bead. It is the piercing flash of Jesus in His glory before it's snuffed out on the cross. In this passage, God both invites and beseeches us to catch a final glimpse of Jesus' incarnate glory before the cross.

Psalm 121: God Our Hope

When was the last time you put your hope in something or someone and were let down? Or when was the last time you let someone down? There's no worse feeling, is there? Letting someone down. If we're honest, we have been on both sides of that equation: we've been let down, and we've let people down—people we care about, respect, love. Where do we go from there? Thankfully, God does not leave us without an answer. In fact, He IS the answer. What we'll learn from Psalm 121 is that trusting in God strengthens our hope.

Lydia's Legacy: The "Mother" Of European Christians

Though we don't know much about Lydia from the pages of Scripture, what we do know sets a high bar for Christians, men and women alike. She was industrious, pious, bold, compassionate, and hospitable. As followers of Jesus, we should let Lydia's example and legacy spur us toward greater love for and commitment to God.

Pompous Piety: Resisting Its Pull

Depending on our disposition, we may feel drawn toward hardnosed, hardline dogmatism in Christianity. Tragically, following this leads us down a path never walked by our Savior, Jesus Christ. Does Christianity contain nonnegotiables? Certainly. Yet personal opinions and truth devoid of love don't make that (remarkably short) list. If a version of Christianity teaches strength without humility, love without sacrifice, and life without a cross, then it is not true Christianity at all. How can we resist this 'Pompous Piety' in our own lives? Join us today as we look at God's Word to find out!

If you've come to the end of 2024 thinking, "That year didn't go quite how I'd hoped it would!" You're not alone. For some, the Messiah's advent would have evoked a similar response, especially from those affected by Herod's rage.

There's something incredible about seeing people push themselves to their physical limits—weightlifters, Olympic Athletes, Ultrarunners. Participating in these sports requires incredible dedication, perseverance, and training. We must realize that our faith requires the same type of training: consistent, and—at times—intense pressure, stress, and strain. Jesus has promised us that with faith the size of a mustard seed we'll be capable of moving—not just a half ton—but an entire mountain! But it'll require effort on our end as God builds it on His. From this passage we'll see that God wants to strengthen our faith in Him this Christmas season.

It's that time of year again: a time when we all sit down with our families to watch our favorite Christmas movies. Which one is your favorite? How many times have you seen it? Is there one that you simply can't stand but the rest of your family loves? If so, you're not alone! It can be tempting to utilize your remote's skip button during THAT music number or sappy dialogue. However, pressing "skip" causes everyone to miss out on part of the story. You may be tempted to skip Matthew 1:1-17, and head right for the "action" of the forthcoming narrative. Instead of pressing skip, let's press "pause," and learn just how important and amazing these first 17 verses are!

Visible Faith in a Divisible World

Christian, you and I are called to be dramatic change in a divisive world. You see, there's one thing that we have which the rest of the world does not: unshakeable faith in the One True God. Yet, I fear there is a natural tendency in us seeking to either shroud that faith behind our particular political affiliation, or use our faith as a battering ram against those whom we disagree. Both approaches are misguided. We are called to have visible faith amid a divisible world. What does this visible faith look like and how do we show it in our lives? In this passage we're introduced to a nameless man with visible faith, living amid a divisible world.

There's something ominous whenever you read, see, or hear the words, "Beware." You immediately perk up. Before that moment, you may have been half-attentively walking on a trail. Now you're on full alert, especially if the sign says—I don't know—Beware, bare den nearby. Gulp. Or, beware, poisonous snakes in area. Be ware. Be aware. Be wary—cautious—concerned. LOOKOUT! This short passage at the tail end of Acts 12 should be a big blinking BEWARE sign for us. It warns us of three pits each of us can trip into if we aren't on guard.

What does your name mean? Did your parents decide to name you after someone who had influenced them? What's in a name and why should it matter to us? In our passage today, we'll see just how and why the disciples of Jesus at Antioch were called something new: Christians. What does being a Christian mean, anyways? Check out today's sermon to find out!

How do you treat God's Word? I think if we aren't careful, we'll soon find ourselves molding God's Word to our lives and choices instead of molding our lives and choices to it! In this message, Pastor Draa looks at three ways we may be "getting in God's Way" instead of allowing His Word to guide our way.

If I were to ask you, "Are you ready to see God work in your life?" What nuance of the word "ready" would you be able to use right now? Would you say, "I'm ready right now—only to remember that you really aren't?" Would you even know where to begin with answering the question, "Are you ready to see God work in your life?" This passage teaches us how to be ready to see God work in our lives. Through this passage we'll learn that God works mightily in the lives of those who are ready to receive. How do we become ready to receive His mighty works?

Maybe you were bold enough to voice to your parent, teacher, coach, or boss the words, "I Don't Quite Understand." What we'll learn from this passage is that our uncertainty is an opportunity to grow in maturity.

Most of us have heard the saying, "There's more to it than first meets the eye." What if there's more to our relationship with God than first meets the eye? In this passage, we'll see four areas of our walk with God where this is the case: in his promises, power, plan, and--often--our own perplexing.

You know the feeling: you're standing in line, stopped in traffic, pacing by the phone, looking at the clock...waiting. Often, it feels like so much of our lives is spent simply waiting for the next thing to happen. Is this the best way to live? We know it's not, but what are its alternatives? By looking at how the Apostles utilized their period of waiting between Christ's Ascension and Pentecost, we can learn how we can best use our own "seasons of waiting."

Let's all think back to our school days. Some of you don't have to think back, you can just think! What's one class you remember having where you thought to yourself, "This is so dumb. I'm never going to use this in my life!!!" Depending on your personality and future goals, some classes were immediately relevant to you, while others—well—let's just say were NOT. Depending on what stripe of Christianity you grew up in, you most likely heard one of two things: The Book of Acts describes HOW the church should still be and function today; or, that Acts is to be viewed as a history book of the post-resurrection church and little more. (Meaning, don't be getting your doctrine from the pages of Acts, otherwise you just may end up like one of them Pentecostal folk!) It is my hope that you see Acts' relevance to the Church today--that you see its relevance to YOU today!

If you're like most people in the world who celebrate Christmas, you and your family participate in the time-honored tradition of giving gifts. Imagine if you bought a gift for your special someone and wrote on the gift tag, "Fulfilling my seasonal obligations, ambivalently yours!" What do you think would be their response? They just might throw it back at you and say, "Keep it!" You see, our motives for what we do matter not just to people, but to God. Throughout Scripture, God reminds us that He desires more than "rote obedience." In this passage, we'll learn what it truly means to follow God from our hearts.

Have you ever thought what it would be like to have a biography written about you? It's an intimidating thought experiment, isn't it? Would your biographer be too honest and reveal more than you'd have liked? Or would they view your life through rose-colored glasses and portray you as better than you actually were? One reason why the Gospel narratives are so powerful, is that they show the humanness of God's followers. In this message, we'll learn from the faithlessness and faithfulness of Zechariah in a message entitled, "Zechariah's Hope."

When you think of Mary, what comes to your mind? If we aren't careful, we may elevate her to such a degree in history that she loses the very thing that most connects her story to our own--her humanity. In what (or whom) did she place her trust, even amid her soon-to-be-VERY-complicated life situation? By asking and answering this question, we'll come to learn--or relearn--something truly amazing about our God.

Throughout the book of Ecclesiastes, we've been reminded of the many frustrations found while living in a fallen world. In this final chapter, the Teacher finally gives us more than a passing glimpse of the way through and eventually out of life's enigmatic labyrinth. Will we follow his leading? Or will we ignore his counsel and traipse into the maze our own way? Each of us must choose.

Have you ever thought of writing a letter to your younger self? What would you say if you did? Would you keep things lighthearted or somber? Would you share something with yourself you wish you had heard when you were younger? What would it be? It this section, we can imagine the Teacher writing a letter to his younger self (Spoiler: he's not actually doing this, but the approach fits the tone). We'll walk with him as he leads us through what it means to walk with God in a fallen world.

By heeding the Teacher's admonitions, the wise student will learn the meaning behind this both simple and abstract chapter.

Have you ever been in a position where knowledge afforded you the luxury of having peace of mind? Maybe you're rewatching a scary movie with a friend who's watching it for the first time. Since you know how the story ends, it gives you peace of mind through the often nail-biting scenes! As Christians, God gives us a similar picture of our lives: we know how they'll end. That realty begs the question, "How come we so often lack this peace? How do we learn to rest in our Father's hands?" Let's journey together into Ecclesiastes 9 to learn three principles to help us rest in our Father's hands.

Ecclesiastes 8 is a look at the limits of wisdom. Wisdom will get you far in life, but it's unable to account for every variable you'll face (i.e. the drunk driver who crosses the centerline and plows into you; the despotic rulers somehow maintaining his control; the wicked prospering and righteous suffering--you get the picture). There must be something more--another, better Guide--capable of leading us through this often frustrating world.

"Those were the days," is a saying we'll commonly throw around while reminiscing our glory days. If we aren't careful, we run the risk of overshadowing the glories in our future with the ones in our past. Is this how we are to live? And, if its not, what is an alternative? How are we, as Christians, to live as though our best glory days are still ahead--because they are. The Teacher in Ecclesiastes has some sage counsel for all of us!

The Teacher has led us down the dead end path of greed already, but he'll do so now with added scrutiny, demanding that we consider our footfalls carefully. He challenges each of us to inspect our own lives: is there any "money love" in my life? If so, why? He'll then put forward the only meaningful alternative--the only path out of the maze of life in a fallen world.

Is "casual" worship biblical worship? Or have we replaced authentic worship with something less than pleasing to God? When we meet together with other believers, do we really believe that our Creator God is in our midst? Have we lost proper fear of the Lord? And if we've lost it, how should we go about getting it back? Kohelet, for the first time in his book, provides clear direction to a question any careful reader has already begun to ponder: How do I rightly fear God?

Let me ask you a question: "Do you trust me?" Your response to my inquiry will depend on a number of factors: Who am I? What's my track record? What am I asking? What is our relationship? Trust is a quality that takes a lifetime to build and can be destroyed in a moment. Some people, having been hurt in the past, refuse to trust anyone. Their life motto becomes: trust no one! But is this the right way to discover a meaningful life in our search in a fallen world? The Teacher will explore these (and similar) issues, as he drives home one necessity for all of us: dependency. I am eternally thankful for Dr. Jim Berg's series through Ecclesiastes. If you've listened to it, you'll hear that I've borrowed on of his illustrations, as (frankly) I think he hit the nail square on its head. Please go listen to his series if you never have! It is one I return to every couple of years, and always learn (or relearn) something new!

Unmet Expectations are often the cause of relational difficulties. Maybe you're someone who has unrealistic expectations of others. Or maybe you're someone who has unrealistic expectations of yourself. How should we learn to manage our expectations, especially given the fact we live in a fallen world? Kohelet urges us to examine three areas of "life under the sun" to help us manage our expectations and act accordingly.

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. We rarely perceive the moving of a clock's hands as the visible reminder that life is slowly--sometimes quickly--passing us by. To focus on time makes one insane; but to ignore it makes one a fool. How are we to understand our role as "free" beings, when we seem to be held captive by the "tyranny of time?" Join us in Ecclesiastes 3 as we catch a glimpse of the Son's rays yet again, this time through His role of guiding human affairs and giving our "time under the sun" true and ultimate purpose.

After the brief glimpse of the Son's rays at the conclusion of chapter 1, the Teacher leads us once again into the fog found in life "under the sun." Is life truly just a chasing after the wind? or will the Teacher give us another peek behind the fog of "hebel?" As we'll see in this chapter, it is only through exploring disillusionment that we can honestly confront reality.

As we enter the maze of life seen through the Teacher's eyes, our own vision becomes quickly shrouded in an eery fog: hebel (meaninglessness, vanity, futility, illusory). Life "under the sun" is often confusing, frustrating. The teacher begins leading us through the maze, introducing us to the big picture of his sermon, and then showing us the first three dead ends: achievement, wisdom, and folly. These three points will become focuses throughout his whole discussion, but for now he'll just hit on them. Is there any hope in a life under the sun? Thankfully, the Teacher allows two rays to shine through the fog.

We've approached a text in 1 Timothy that seems utterly nonsensical in our 21st century, post-sexual revolution and feminist American context. Yet, as we look around at our society, we see more gender confusion, divorce, depression, and suicide than ever before. Could it be that the very "liberties" modernists have touted as progressive are the very chains holding us back from true freedom? Join us today, as Pastor Draa looks at a pertinent passage in a message entitled, "Paul: A Proper Feminist."

Christians are called to contend for the faith, but they often interpret this admonition to mean "be contentious." Sadly, churches continue to split over eternally irrelevant preferences. If we aren't guarded, our church could be the next casualty. We must contend for the faith; but how? and to what extent? Where are we to hold the line and where are we to yield the ground?

In some Christian circles, there is a sharp contrasted between law and grace. Through our proper understanding of law, however, we'll see that even the law itself IS a grace from God. From beginning to end, our Maker has woven a blood-red thread of grace into humanity through His Son. Join us, as we seek to understand this "Overflow of Grace."
