Here are the key points from the biblical narrative and theological interpretations: Remorse vs. Repentance: The Gospel of Matthew says Judas was "seized with remorse" (or "repented himself" in older translations). Theologians generally distinguish this from true repentance, which involves a turning away from sin and a genuine desire to seek God's forgiveness and restoration. Judas's sorrow led to despair and suicide, not a return to Jesus for mercy. Lack of Forgiveness Sought: While Judas expressed guilt to the chief priests, he did not seek forgiveness from God. His actions are often contrasted with Peter's denial of Jesus, after which Peter wept bitterly and was later restored through his repentance and renewed commitment to Christ. Jesus' Own Words: Jesus made several statements that are widely interpreted as indicating Judas's lost fate. He called Judas the "son of destruction" or "son of perdition" (John 17:12). Educated in the Catholic parochial school system as a youth, he later obtained separate bachelor degrees in creative arts and electrical engineering. Jim and his wife, Jean, came to Christ in their mid-twenties through a home Bible study (see "Two Stories of Salvation"). In the months that followed, they became more active in the Catholic faith, but left the Church two years later when convinced that Roman Catholic teaching could not be reconciled with the biblical gospel of salvation. In 1981, Jim graduated from the Discipleship Intern Training Program (DITP), a nine-month program of Bible instruction and practical training hosted by Fairhaven Bible Chapel in San Leandro, California. In 1983, Hillview Bible Chapel in Cupertino, California, commended Jim and Jean to fulltime Christian ministry. God's sovereign choice to elect some for salvation necessarily includes the decree of reprobation for others. The reprobate are those whom God has chosen to reject, not to intervene on their behalf with saving grace, but to leave them to their own devices and the just punishment for their sins. Reprobation is an act of God's sovereignty: It's rooted in God's eternal plan and purpose, not based on foreseen good or bad deeds of individuals. Romans 9:11-13, "11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that the purpose of God according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, "The older shall serve the younger." 13 Just as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." It's not about "equal ultimacy": Reprobation is not considered to be on the same level of active causation as election. The purpose of church discipline is not to be mean-spirited or to display a holier-than-thou attitude. Rather, the goal of church discipline is the restoration of the individual to full fellowship with both God and other believers. The discipline is to start privately and gradually become more public. It is to be done in love toward the individual, in obedience to God, and in godly fear for the sake of others in the church.
