A Man Born Blind

In this ninth chapter of John we see Jesus overcome the darkness of this man born blind. Jesus was composed to note the need of this blind beggar on the road side. Our Lord tarried to heal this blind man completely which angered the Pharisees greatly but His power is too strong to be set aside by mortal evil.

A Marvelous Example

The Bible is a marvelous book full of very good advice. It gives to God's people many examples to be followed and many other to be carefully avoided. Because of the idolatrous practice of Mariolatry in the Roman church most Christians have missed the glorious example of Mary the earthly mother of Jesus. There is no mother who could be a more marvelous example then was the bride of Joseph.

The Healing of a Demonic Boy

The earlier part of this chapter tells us about the transfiguration of Jesus; a time when His inner circle of disciples saw His glory and heard His Father speak of Christ's majesty. The same compassion that brought Jesus down from the Father's throne now leads Him to deal with a child who was possessed with demons and crushed under the burden of their enslavement. The Lord also deals with religious doubters and with faithless disciples but He proves Himself to be the Son of glory by healing this troubled child.

Things Most Precious

This has been a week of challenges for me; the physical limitations I am dealing with restrict me in an unaccustomed way. Several people I know have died this week including one of my best friends. I consider the promises and assurances that are given to us in the word of God and to be blessed by its comforting words. Peter was a rough fisherman who had been called to serve the Lord Jesus Christ; he failed often and stumbled frequently but he grasped certain precious truths that were a blessing to him and his Christian friends.

Jesus Heals a Blind Man

Mark is the only gospel author to detail this miracle which took place at Bethsaida near the site of the feeding of the 5000 men. His friends brought this blind man to Jesus hoping that Jesus would touch hi with merciful hands. Jesus dealt with this man differently then He did with any other object of mercy; our Lord was not a machine and he dealt with every individual on a personal and dynamic way. He took the man and led him away to a distant place and performed His only miracle that was not instantaneous.

An Example of Faith & Obedience

We are all surrounded by good and bad examples of spiritual life but our best mortal example is Abraham the Old Testament patriarch because his faith moved him to obey God in all things and in all situations. Abraham was moved in many directions and tempted in many ways but he obeyed God. Like Abraham, Christians have many trials and bear many burdens but their primary ojective in life is t obey God. To obey God is our mission, our goal, ad our objective.

This is a transition time in the ministry of Jesus, His success as a teacher and a miracle worker is being swallowed up by the opposition of all His enemies. Herod has become suspicious of our Master, the Pharisees could not hide their active hostility and hatred; even the common people were now taking offense at some of His messages. It is more difficult for Him to be concealed but such a great Physician could never go unnoticed in a world of suffering. Jesus departs for the area around Tyre and Sidon where this pagan woman comes to Him begging for mercy for her poor daughter who is demon possessed.

The woman mentioned in our text is one of three women named Mary who anointed our Lord of glory during His ministry. This woman brought an alabaster box of precious ointment and poured it on His feet as He sat at the table of Simon the Pharisee. Simon was upset that He allowed this sinful woman to wipe His feet with her hair but Jesus rebuked him and commended the woman for her love and declared her to be clean by God's grace.

These miracles are closely related and very similar. They are recorded in all four of the gospel accounts with about 35,000 people fed with a supply of 12 loves of bread and a few small fish. What a significant sight to see His powerful efforts with mortal eyes and human emotions. Our Lord is capable of all the creative power exercised on behalf of these needy people who hear Him. The Lord is concerned about the physical needs of this crowd of listeners. He is the all sufficient one who can meet every need: physical, mental, or spiritual of all those who hear this message.

Sin Is the Enemy of God

Most people in our society and culture do not understand sin; they think of sin as some horrible, obnoxious act that repulses almost all human beings. But sin is far worse then that; sin is anything less then the holy perfection of deity. God gave the law as a declaration of His righteous standard; it has no saving capacity for any who break this law; the law is a statement of God's exacting standard of attitude and conduct. The sinfulness of sin is contrary to the requirement of God but also a condemnation of sinful flesh. Sin is obnoxious to and worthy of the hatred of God and man. Humanity may hate sin and God hates no one except for their sin.

The Woman With the Issue of Blood

In our scripture reading tonight we find a cure obtained without a word being spoken beforehand. As Jesus proceeds to Jarius' house He finds another merciful work to do on the way to his house. This woman was probably a resident of the Capernaum area who had wandered throughout Galilee seeking a relief from her plague. This desperate soul takes seemingly unreasonable step to achieve a healing for body, she had faith that Jesus would touch her but she feared to speak to Him.

The Beauty of Our King

The Assyrians had invaded Judah with a vast army under the direction of Rabshekah; he terrified the people with his threatening words but Isaiah conveyed God's message of victory to the people. We have a king far more majestic then Hezekiah, our well beloved Monarch who suffered in the days of His fleshly existence but in our text there is a precious promise of His triumph over evil and His victory over the sin of His covenant people. Our Lord has forgiven His covenant people with blessings beyond imagination, glories beyond our grasp, and happiness beyond the utmost blessings of this flesh.

Jesus and His disciples received a warm welcome as they returned to Capernaum but as they gathered around the Master an anxious father bowed before Him and made a plea for his daughter to be healed. Jesus immediately left with the man to return to his home. On the way He is interrupted by a very ill woman who is in desperate straits; after healing her He continues to Jairus' home where we see the resurrection miracle we consider this evening.

Paul was very anxious about his son in the faith, Timothy. He loved this young man greatly and had confidence in him. He could not be careless in praying for him and in exhorting him to continue steadfast in the ministry. He gave Timothy some wise advice here; our warfare is of a different kind; it is spiritual not carnal, eternal not temporal.

The Ministry of our Lord

The ministry of Christ to our world was distinct and definite; the ministry of the gospel should also be clear and transparent. Many professors of religion ignore the doctrine of the atonement presented in the New Testament. They speak not of Christ dying or of Christ's burial or of Christ raised back to heaven but the gospel bell has only one tone - there is no remission there without shed blood, no salvation apart from the offering of Christ. This message never wearies the believer's heart; it never fails to be the power of God unto salvation for everyone of the elect.

Jesus had come to Gadara only a few hours earlier before meeting the demented creature. In Luke's record of this trouble soul he reveals a man guilty of self-mutilation, a man naked and unclean, a man possessed with super human strength yet a man who was to be the object of supernatural power. Here was a man soon to have his demons expelled and to be found at Jesus' feet clothed and in his right mind. A man once deceived who now desired to follow Jesus but was sent home to declare the power of God to heal both body and soul.

God's Infinite Knowledge of Sin

The ancient people of God were annoyingly emotionless; God was well pleased to send them prophets to call them to repentance but they still paid more attention to the gods of the heathen then they did to the one true and living God. Their souls sought after their dead deities of human invention. Nothing can exceed the obstinate stupidity of an unregenerate heart. God speaks to us un the silent shadows of the darkness and He fills our heart with His presence. Sanctification needs to be in us a perpetual work, a daily work which must be done by the Holy Spirit.

Matthew is the only gospel writer to tell us of this particular miracle of healing grace. Matthew tells of this miracle of healing these blind men; here we have two men who have no hope of getting better; two men who came to Jesus seeking mercy from the touch of the only omnipotent healer who ever walked on God's troubled planet.

Some Good News, Some Hard News

In our text there are two classes mentioned, the righteous and the wicked; and the word of God divides the globe's population into only these two classes. When Christ founded His church it included many races and many cultures of people but it only dealt with these two classes. A crimson stream runs between the righteous and the wicked and nothing but the banner of the cross separates them.

Because of the great crowds still thronging the Master He commanded His disciples to take him in their boat and move to the other side of the lake. The Lord addressed the huge crowd ad then set the stage for this miracle He would perform that evening. He is the Lord of not only people but of the natural earth as well.

our Surety Puts Away Sin

Humanity is separated from God by a rebellious heart and a false sense of personal righteousness. They look upon their sin and expect God to forgive them in unlimited grace; the law has been broken and atonement is so costly, it is beyond the reach of carnal flesh. Even true believers sometimes forget the cost of their redemption; they forget that God must be holy, and that the only perfect atonement gives peace to the awakened soul. God spares our souls at a vast expense, His own Son freely delivered up for us all; He displays His grace in Christ to each of the true elect.

Jesus had been speaking to His disciples about the Father; about the fact that He would soon return to the heavenly Father; about the Father's glorious home and that He was going there to await them. This verse has been read with great profit by the children of grace for more than two thousand years. Observe that our Lord is not speaking about three things but only one; He is the way to the Father, the truth ad life are put here to explain the means of the way. Christ is the life that results from the truth and the way through which blessedness and eternal life come to the elect of grace.

Luke is the only gospel narrator to describe this amazing miracle of the raising of the young man who had died of an undisclosed cause. As Jesus leaves Capernaum and enters the city of Nain He encounters this funeral procession on the way to be bury the body of this young man. We must note carefully the coincidences and timing of our Master's appearance and the proper place and proper timing to perform this miracle. This was no accidental meeting; it was the working out of the divine purpose. No one asked for a miracle to be performed but Christ did what Christ does best, He met the needs of this young man and his widowed mother.

On this first Sunday of 2018 I wanted to bring you a message of hope and assurance to prepare us for this coming year. None of us has any idea what will occur in the coming year, but I assure you most of it will be unexpected. But whatever our circumstances it is certain where we must look and have hope; "Be still and know that I am God"!

This incident represents Christ as able to cure from a distance and in the absence of the scoffers just by speaking a word. Each of these healings is guided by the Holy Spirit and affords a view of our Lord's solemn warning to the nation. Luke wrote for the Gentiles and introduced the gospel to the Gentiles to suppress their proud conceit. This miracle occurs as Jesus comes to Capernaum and Luke gives us a close glimpse of the details and circumstances.

The Joy of Salvation

The tinsel and glimmer of the Christmas season is now passed; it is time to take down and remove lights and decorations from your houses; the excitement of children is finished for a while. The holiday is finished and we are once again plunged into the dark world of reality. This is a time to consider taxes and the discovery of news of a new year. It is time for the post-celebration depression that makes this the most popular suicide season of the year, but it need not be so for the children of grace. We can join David and cry out "I will rejoice in Thy salvation." The Lord of glory makes every day to be a happy day for His children because of their spiritual heritage.

The scene described in our scripture reading must have been very dramatic. The crowds of interested peasants pressed together to hear Christ declaring God's word to the Pharisees and scribes; and to see Him healing many in a crowd. Four men arrive late in the day carrying their paralyzed friend on his bed only to find all the doors and windows clogged with people. Luke tells us that this man was palsied, he had some neurological defect in his bodily systems, but Jesus spoke to him kindly and healed him to the fullest measure.

Most serious Bible students own a book called "A Harmony of the Gospels" which extracts the events in the gospels and amazes them in a logically ordered sequence. The four men who wrote the gospel accounts recorded the events in and around the ministry of Jesus as they saw them. It must be remembered that the gospels are inspired of the Holy Spirit and that He moved them to write and they did. The healing of this leper is a powerful display of Christ's power and authority.

In this collection of Job's troubles we meet his dearest friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. They came to comfort him but soon became utterly critical of all that he was and all that he had done. Our text comes from the words of a young man named Elihu who came to hear Job's friends but soon turned to Job and began to challenge him to greater faith in God and submission to the Lord's will.

Unlike faith healers and religious practitioners, our Lord's miracles were spontaneous and unpredictable to the human experience. Every event of the life and ministry of Jesus was purposed and put in place by God the Father; they all occurred when He wanted them to and where He wanted them to. The demons feared Him and His powers but they did exactly what He told them to do.

In the previous chapter the Hebrew Sanhedrin had attempted to silence the preachers of God's grace and to eradicate the name of Jesus from their people. They had jailed, mocked, beaten, and persecuted the early believers with confidence that the early church would be wiped out from the face of the earth but they were WRONG! We look today at the death of the first martyr of the church, Stephen the disciple.

Healing the Impotent Man at Bethesda

The object of our study this evening is the healing of an impotent man at Jerusalem who has been crippled for almost four decades. More importantly it was a miracle that led to the first resistance of Christ and would ultimately lead to rampant hatred and animosity toward the Lord of glory. The rediculous anger of the Sanhedrin against Jesus was stirred by the habit of our Lord of healing people on the Sabbath day. Religious traditions have frequently been the cause for people turning against God and doing ungodly acts.

Life In the Son, Death in the Flesh

When we talk about the work of the Holy Spirit some fall into questions and dependencies. Some are unable to discern the work of grace within the body of Christ. The Spirit declares a complete salvation by faith in Christ. There is eternal life I the Son of God but there is eternal death in this carnal flesh.

Our Lord has performed a great spiritual miracle at Jacob's well. After two days He migrated to Galilee where He did more miracles then in our text He comes again to Cana where He is greeted by a nobleman who is passionately concerned about his son who is critically ill. Tonight we want to look at this man and his petition to the Savior.

What a powerful statement is made here in our text. It was made to one of the objects of God's electing love who had not yet met the Lord of glory. She knew much about religion, about Jewish history, about the Messiah expected to come soon; but she did not know Christ! The greatest marvel of the Bible is when a poor, condemned sinner is touched by the hand of the Lord and is brought to faith in Christ Jesus.

After His baptism Jesus was led of the Spirit into the wilderness. There he fasted for forty days and nights while Satan tempted Him. If Satan is not fearful to confront and tempt the Son of God he certainly will not hesitate to tempt the children of grace in their pilgrimage of faith. I want to look tonight at the temptations of Jesus in the wilderness.

Some of you have been listening to me preach the gospel for a long time and you have learned that I only get excited about one holiday a year. This coming Thursday will be that special day - Thanksgiving. God is the giver of every gift and every blessing and because of that we should be motivated to be thankful. We live in a country where we are blessed so richly with the kindness of God and we ought to be a thankful people. All spiritual blessings are a reason to rejoice.

The Incarnation of Christ

The incarnation of Christ is a great mystery, but it is also a great miracle - God is manifested in human flesh. This cannot be explained! We will loose our reason; we will lose our souls if we do not grasp this blessed truth. He is the only baby ever known in this world who did not have a mortal father! Rejecting the virgin birth also causes you to reject the inspiration of the scriptures. True faith rests on the declared fact that Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born of the virgin Mary. This is the beginning of the only atonement which can save a sinner.

When Jesus died the apostles felt like this was the end of their cause; smite the shepherd and the sheep are scattered. But Jesus had taught the disciples to view life from a spiritual perspective and He taught them that His death would destroy the powers of darkness. Jesus is God's magnet that lifts up the covenant seed and sets them on the high plateau of Christ's perfection.

We will examine about thirty five of these special occurrences where God overwhelms the normal and does something amazing. King Jesus is the foundation and the purpose of all these miracles.

The Miracles in Zechariah

In Ezra 6:14 mention is made of both Haggai and Zechariah as prophets of God. They were men with a shared ministry of urging the Jews to rebuild the Temple and to restore the ordinances of its ceremonies and services. Zechariah had two great missions in his ministry as an inspired prophet: (1) To declare and illuminate the four great empires that were coming and (2) to foretell the future conditions of the Hebrew people after the destruction of these empires.

Like Job our conflicts with the Lord overshadow all of our afflictions and all of the difficulties we face in this uncertain life.

The Miracles in Jonah

Jonah was a contemporary of Hosea and Amos and his book is historically accurate. This is a supernatural book filled with several events that characterize the person and work of the sovereign God. Some have questioned this book but the testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 12:39-41 verifies its authenticity and its truth. Jonah was an unusual prophet; a proud Jew who hated the Gentiles of Nineveh and had no joy in the end result of the ministry to which he was called. Jonah is a clear indicator that it is not the power of the preachers that matters but the power of God that changes things.

I have flown over most of the world we live in and occasionally would see a mountain so tall its snow-capped peak extended above the clouds. As we read the scriptures there are many joyous peaks of God's mercy and grace to bless the children of grace as redeemed saints. Our text today is one of those special passages.

The Miracles of Amos the Prophet

Amos was a herdsman and a farmer whom God called to preach in the days of Hosea and Isaiah. He lived in Tekoa of Judah but was called to preach to the northern kingdom of Israel. He was uneducated and humble, led by the Spirit of God, and had a burden to declare God's word to his hearers. Amos predicted the destruction of the nation and the scattering of the people. He condemned the false religion that proliferated in the land.

An Unquestionable Mystery

Paul reminded Timothy that the church was the pillar and ground of the truth, and he pressed on this young man to properly behave himself in the ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ. God has given a precious gift to His churches in the gospel of free grace and it is imperative that we treasure that gift properly. Christianity has a message that brings hope to the most destitute of sinners; it declares God's perfect forgiveness of sin in His beloved Son.

The Miracles of Daniel

There are several men in the Old Testament that are very special to me. One of those men is the prophet Daniel whom God used in a powerful way. Daniel and his three Hebrew friends: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were used in this book to display God's majesty ad strength. Daniel displayed great wisdom and character in the camps of Nebuchadnezzar and Belshasser as well as the Persian princes. Tonight we will look at some of the miracles in Daniel.

This miraculous occurrence is recorded in all three of the synoptic gospels. Each author casts a slightly different light on the experience but they all tell the same story. The Holy Spirit obviously wanted the Lord's churches to hear of this glorious healing and to learn from its experience. There are several lessons to be learned from this unclean man and his incurable disease. He displays for us a proper approach to come to the Lord of glory.

The Miracles in Jeremiah

Jeremiah is best known as the "weeping prophet" because he shed so many tears over the sins of his nation and her wicked people. Here was a powerful prophet with a tender heart who is sympathetic toward the coming down of his nation. His personality is a blend of severity and child-like tenderness. He was called of God to pull down and destroy; to build up and to plant. God gave him a miraculous vision of the work he was called to do (1:10-19); the awful nature of Jeremiah's call was to declare the desolation of his important country.

If you will read the earlier part of this psalm you will see that David was in deep distress as he wrote its words of lamentation (see vs. 10-12). In this sad condition David found consolation in turning his thoughts from the present troubles to the goodness of God. His doing so is very wise and he instructs us to hear his thoughts and to let our minds embrace God's goodness. Forget your needs and remember the loving kindness of Jehovah.

The Miracles of Ecclesiastes

The book of Ecclesiastes is inspired of God; it is a record of mortal life. His ideas and his reasoning about life are set forth with divine conclusions. Solomon here exposes the most fatal of all delusions including that the pursuit of happiness is not our chief good. He declares that true happiness can only be found in the fear of God and strength to keep His commandments. Solomon centers around the evidence of God's majestic sovereignty in every realm.

The Curse and Its Cure

The prophet Jeremiah in the last days of Judah's survival was made to be a prisoner of Zedekiah. The Babylonian army was camped out at the gates of Jerusalem ready to enter the city and utterly destroy it. But in the midst of this scene of despair comes the word of hope for the future; a word of cure for the curse which affects all mortal beings. These words were needed when God gave them and they are still needed in this day of rampant immorality and corrupt behavior.

It would take a large volume to contain and explain all the facets of the supernatural to be found in the God glorifying aspects of the Bible. This is an epitome of the Bible adapted to the purposes of devotion and praise. The early church knew this book and it was memorized by the people of Israel. The psalms were used at meals, in business practices, and also to enliven the social hours of the people, and to soften the troubles of life.

The psalms are a book of simple poetical verse that stirs the heart and soul of the child of grace to rejoice in the mercy of God, and displays to their hearts the wonderful workings of God in the souls of regenerate men and women. Our text is a delightful sonnet to the spiritual mind; the soul that has been subdued by the Spirit and delivered from the bondage of self dominion has a humble, teachable soul that rejoices in God and serves Him greatly.

The Miracles of Job

Those of you who have been listening to me preach for many years are aware that I am a great fan of this man Job. His character is reflective of a man who loves God and trusts God no matter what his situation may be; a man who can both rejoice in God's abundant gifts and worship God when he has lost everything in this world. Job was a man who was attacked by his enemies; a man who was mocked by his own wife; and a man who was shamed by his best friends. Job is a man of patience even in times of uncertainty; a man of faith even when all things and all people appear to be against him. Job trusts God!

A Most Blessed Truth

This 136th psalm was constantly sung in the temple by singers appointed to the service of God. Their singing was very appropriate because of God's continual mercy, and therefore our thanksgiving is appropriate whatever the circumstances of life might be. The perpetual mercy of God has been equal to His promises which God has never failed to fulfill. Our hearts should be full of gratitude and our spirits filled with music at the proclamation of joy in Jehovah's glorious name.

Elijah appeared to Elisha while the young man was plowing his father's field with a yoke of oxen. Elijah cast his hairy mantle upon Elisha and called him to be his replacement as a prophet of God. Elisha did even more miracles then did Elijah but to a nation that was nearing bondage and judgment because of their sins. God would give Elisha inner peace and calm, his miracles were to the poor and distressed people of the nation. We know very little about Elisha's personal life but we learn much about the miracles of this prophet.

The prodigal child of the Old Testament while a great sinner like other men is conspicuous, as a shepherd, as a musician, as a poet, and later as a powerful king. David was Jesse's youngest son; a bright-eyed, courageous, and contemplative young man. As a shepherd he was acquainted with nature, anointed of God to be the king of Israel, he was a great warrior who wrote many songs of praise to his Lord. David became a man after God's own heart despite his frequent failures. He suffered pain, failure, and unbelief but never lost sight of God his Lord.

Regeneration or new life in Christ is one of the most fundamental doctrines in the Christian creed. It is a Biblical truth precious to all those who have been brought to Christ but it is unheard and unknown to the vast majority of modern religionists who belong to the plethora of churches around us. People may be orthodox in the fundamentals of our faith but leave out this, most important truth of Christianity.

Last week we talked about miracles in the life of Joshua, tonight we will look at another great hero of faith, Gideon the judge. As he leads Israel they continually wander in sin and unbelief. When defeated by Midian the Israelites cry out to God for mercy and support. God sends an angelic prophet to call Gideon from his father's fields to be their leader. Gideon led them by grace but sadly saw them depart from righteousness before his death.

God's Promising Wisdom

This verse has a special message to persons who are troubled, tempted, and tried saints, people who are often near their wits end. They may be sure of God's overcoming power but are distressed at the present. God's promise is so wide, so extensive that whatever our need, whatever our dilemma, this text gives us comfort. We cannot serve our Lord without an understanding of our dependency and need; we must be taught by God or failure will be our end. Christ is our Light, He is the Balm of Gilead to every wounded soul in this world of sin and folly.

The Miracles of Joshua

The Bible is a book of heroes, and God often performed miracles to authenticate the man, his motive, and his mission. God did miracles in the life of Enoch, of Joseph, of Isaac, of Moses, and of this humble man we know as Joshua. Joshua went into the promised land with the other spies and when they grew fearful Joshua insisted that they follow the course of obedience to God. God appointed Joshua to replace Moses and did several miracles through His servant.

In reading the Bible I am often touched with how God uses His created vessels as tools in His ministry of miracles to humanity. In the garden He used a serpent, at the ark a dove, in Egypt a bleeding lamb, in Jonah a great fish, and here in Numbers a humble female donkey to declare His message to humanity.

For Whom Did Jesus Die?

Sound Baptists are not protestant bodies; one of the reasons for that is their founder and their origin. Another critical issue is that most protestants loudly proclaim that Jesus died for every body and the difference between the regenerate and the unbeliever is the exercise of their free will. I do not, and most sound Baptists do not believe that. God chose a people and loved them, well before the creation of Adam. He gave them to Christ as an inheritance for whom Jesus would stand Surety. The concept of universal redemption is a damning doctrine embraced by many but which blesses none.

To those of you who truly love Christ, hear these awesome words from the Cross. Our hearts almost burst with anguish when we hear these somber tones of appeal to God. Words too sacred, too solemn; words for silent reflection, and reverent adoration. This is an expression coming from the lowest depths of Christ's sufferings. Do as Jesus did; come in His condition and appeal to the throne of grace.

The Miracle of the Brasen Serpents

When the Canaanites heard that Israel was coming they opened a battle which saw Israel lose with many of her soldiers either killed or captured. The people of Israel prayed to God and begged Moses to intervene on their behalf. The Lord heard them and overwhelmed the Canaanites destroying the city of Hormah. But the Jews got arrogant and began to complain about God and also Moses His servant. This led to a judgment of poisonous serpents and later to the miracle of the brazen serpent as a vessel of healing who they later turned into an idol.

The apostle Paul's greatest privilege was to be allowed to preach the gospel; he entered upon this work with intrinsic delight. The most immanent of God's servants magnify their office as preachers of the gospel of free grace. While Paul was thankful for his office, his success humbled him and left him trusting in God's grace and strength. These preachers were utterly powerless apart from the living God; they know how weak and unworthy they are. The gospel minister has only one message, and nothing else to declare.

The distinguishing mark of a true Christian is their confidence in Christ's love and they love Him in return. They rejoice that God's love has been shown to them by His gift of grace and His holy call to life in the Lamb. Love to Jesus is the flame that seals their hearts and binds them to Christ. The ambition of the Christian for Christ was boundless; they are enabled by divine grace to know the power of Christ's love and live for the glory of their thorn-crowned King.

The children of Israel have been in bondage for more than 450 years, but now they are free. They have lived in absolute poverty with no hope, no refuge, and no opportunities; but now they are leaving bondage with a high hand taking all the wealth and treasures of the Egyptians that they can carry. But after a short journey they come to the boundaries of the Red Sea and face a problem they have never dealt with - how to get across! But God has a plan - deliverance; God has a man - Moses; and God has the power to do anything He chooses.

These are the words of Eliphaz the Temanite; and while we cannot take all his words as inspired of God these statements have a powerful message. Here he gives voice to a great truth of God and we may regard these words as the voice of God. The truth they convey is confirmed by similar statements throughout the scriptures. This is good advice from God to His chosen people.

Moses' Mighty Miracles in Egypt

In the Bible miracles are a frequent occurrence. God used men, women. and animals to bring to pass a broad example of miraculous occurrences. But of all the people there was none who was so used as was Moses. From his birth to his burial Moses was constantly involved in miraculous events, but the focus in these events is not on Moses, it is on the Lord of glory who used him as an instrument to perform these events. These ten miracles of God done by Moses conveyed God's message to Pharaoh and the Egyptians.

Their Master and Head was to be taken away from them. This mental life is full of troubles; our afflictions harass us frequently but in our text there is a blessed comforting promise.

He was a prophet who spoke the word of God to his people; he was known as "Jehovah's slave" as well as "Jehovah's chosen", and he was also known as "the man of God". Details of his life and character are recorded not only in the Pentateuch but in Acts and Hebrews, as well as other places in scripture.

This is a day when fathers are recognized across this country. If you have, or did have, a good father then you have been richly blessed. Millions of pages of the praises of men are written every year; most of them unjustly. Whole sections of libraries are filled with volumes extolling the biographies of men who are sinners at the very best. Herein Luke's gospel the Holy Spirit inspires this man to pen a great praise of Simeon whose life is a model for all other men.

Genesis 19 contains three great miracles related to Sodom and Gomorrah. It is never wise for a nation or a city or a family to aggravate God with their practice of iniquity. In this chapter we see God move to protect His agents of warning; we see God pour out His wrath on two cities that loved wickedness but rejected God's standards; and we see God pour out personal judgment on a woman who was offered mercy but whose heart longed for the iniquity of Sodom.

Punishment's Frightening Character

My most favorite subject to preach is the mercy and abundant kindness of God in the Lord Jesus Christ. I do so with the assurance that God will never cast out any who come to Christ in faith. If any of you are without Christ take no refuge in anything else. God has ordained both the terror of the Law and the tenderness of the gospel that by their message regenerated sinners are brought to Christ in faith.

The Miracle of the Flood

We seldom look at what we call "natural occurrences" and think of miracles. We speak of them as accidents or tragedies or natural disasters. The most astounding miracle of the Old Testament is the outpouring of rain and the opening of springs that destroyed all things outside the ark. What an amazing story; God calls a sinner named Noah and tells him to prepare a craft to hold a sampling of all animal life and a few selected humans. Then God closes the door and the rain begins to fall.

Christ's Condemnation of Sin

One of the most beautiful titles of the Lord Jesus Christ is "...the friend of publicans and sinners..." He graciously sought out the lost and invited the erring to pardon and reconciliation. The Pharisees asserted that Jesus treated sin casually and made it easy to forget but Jesus was above all others a discourager of sin by example and in practice. He was beyond all others the enemy of sin; He was the Great Physician.

The miracle of Enoch's Walk with God

The whole book of Genesis is just one miracle after another: the creation, the ark, the confusion of tongues at Babel, and many others declare the miraculous nature of this revealed book. Tonight we want to examine a man who was born like other mortals but who never died. We find this account of Enoch recorded in Genesis 5:24 and in Hebrews 11:5. Enoch lived the shortest in his line (365 years) but his son Methuselah lived the longest (969 years).

The Miracles of Creation

We have discussed that the Bible is a great miracle and that it contains the accounts of many miracles. Some are physical, some are mental, many are spiritual. But the first miracle of the Bible is the account of God's creation of the heavens and the earth. What a marvelous display of divine power is seen in these early chapters of Genesis. I want to speak to you this evening on the miracles of creation.

Just as God chose a people who did not know Him; He chose in the abundance of His grace to display His salvation to people who are out of the way; people who are lost because of their willful sin. To have a proper balance of the truth you must not only embrace his sovereign mercy in free grace but also the sureness of the elect to come to Christ in faith by the power of God the Father.

The Miraculous Book of Miracles

The Old Testament is a volume of abundant miracles; perhaps as many as the New Testament but sadly neglected. Prophets, priests, kinds, soldiers, and visionaries were all involved in miraculous events and activities. Prophecy is a wondrous miracle that reveals God as the sovereign of all things in life and in history. We will take a brief overview of OT miracles tonight. Another great miracle is the Bible itself; the book is a handiwork of God's power brought to bear on more than forty authors inspired to write exactly what God would have recorded. We will take a look this evening at this miracle of inspired revelation.

Most of you know that I avoid holidays with a passion; my exceptions are Thanksgiving day and Fathers & Mother's days. Today is Mother's Day and I am so thankful for all the godly women in our church and especially for our mothers. These are difficult times for godly mothers and they are given so much bad advice by counselors and pastors. But God has unlimited blessings to bestow on His faithful servants. They are not called to be elders or prophets or pastors but they are given this blessed title with its many challenges and trials.

The Stirring of the Redeemed

The apostle Paul quoted often from the Old Testament and even more he spoke the words God gave him to declare without hesitancy or fear . Many relate to our text as words to the unconverted but I believe its prominent application is to the children of grace. Men and women often appear to be asleep spiritually and God tells His under-shepherd to speak to their hearts the message of God. Here Paul calls regenerate sinners to awake and hear God.

Christ the Better Sacrifice

It is impossible to understand the distinction between the works of flesh and the grace of God in free mercy. Until human beings grasp and understand the distinction between works and grace they are hopeless as far as gaining eternal life in the Lord Jesus Christ. God will only look at Christ with acceptance. He is a better Substitute, He is a better Mediator, He is a better Surety, He is the complete and best in all ways, and procures for the elect believers every single thing they need to be accepted of the Father and adopted into His family. Christ is better!

This is a very special service; every time we share in the Lord's Table it is a joyous occasion in the life of true believers. Bread and wine can be taken by the unregenerate but it has no spiritual significance. The Lord's Supper only has meaning when it is observed by spiritual people and in a spiritual day. This supper is a memorial, it tells of a godly man who perfectly kept the law then died as a substitute for all those given to Him by the Father. This is a gathering of saints who rejoice in the imputed mercy of God's redeeming Lamb.

As the apostle closes this glorious letter he directs our hearts to the God of peace. We have no idea what trials, temptations, an troubles we have yet to face before our days here are done. The source of all that is needed by the saints in this world is grace; saving grace, sufficient grace, sustaining grace, and nothing else but grace. It is what we need to reach the promised land of God's presence.

This blessed text was spoken by my Master, not to His beloved disciples but to His enemies (v.33) The indignant cluster of religious bigots had no desire but to kill my blessed Lord (v.31). Jesus wanted them to know what they could not know, that spiritual life was inexpressibly preached. The comfort of fleshly treats in this carnal world are sought by these people but Christ is ignored and rejected. Our Lord has put us in possession of the marks by which His sheep may be identified.

The Blood of the Shepherd

Every one in this world has hope of one kind or another, but most of them are foolish and powerless teachings, either their physical or eternal destiny. These verses tell us of our needs but also tell us of God's unlimited supplies; all true believers have one hope, the kindness of God. God's heart is perpetually open to those who need His help for one reason or another, and have been washed in the shed blood of Jesus Christ through the atoning hands of God. It is critical for believers to know that they may have had needs which appear to be greater than God's means to answer and fulfill them. God's grace is greater because He has confidence in the Lord Jesus.

A Wise Prayer From Job

Job was a wise man who knew how to pray and here we see him in the depth of despair and need. Job was a man in dire necessity, not for material wealth, or worldly relationships, although he had just lost a fortune and all of his children, as well as the respect and honor of his neighbors. Job needed his greatest resource so he cries out for God's presence; God's adopted children run home when the storms come and shatter their peace. Job knew that in the midst of life's distresses there is no refuge for him except in the welcoming arms of God.

Sacrifices That Please God

The Old Testament is a volume of do's and don'ts; a library of what, where, when, and why to offer sacrifices to God. But in the 15th verse of this chapter we read of the sacrifice of praise to God. All of the religions of humanity recorded in the Bible and in the binders of human history are all about what people can and would do to offer sacrifices to God that will earn them forgiveness. But this blessed book has told us from beginning to end about a better sacrifice, a perfect sacrifice, an atoning sacrifice, here is recorded a sacrifice that truly pleases God.

A Message to His People From God

Habakkuk is one of the most interesting and passionate prophets of God to be encountered in the Old Testament. He just could not grasp how God would allow mortal people to practice every evil and wickedness with total disregard for the teachings of God. God speaks to His people daily by means of the scriptures; He also speaks to them by the marvels of His providence, both national and personal, the God of heaven also speaks to mortals by His Holy Spirit who strives with en who hear but refuse to obey. Mortals reject God's messengers and despise His teachings; they forget His words and listen to carnal foolishness. God still speaks to His people, to His preachers, and to His churches.

Suffering to Sanctify

The author of this glorious book has told us over and over again about the vicarious atonement of Christ for all the sins o all His covenant people. This thirteenth chapter draws us forward toward a final conclusion by reminding us that He sanctified us completely not with words or with deeds or with miracles but by the shedding of His own blood on a cross outside of the city of Jerusalem. The children of grace must never, ever abandon the glorious message of the bloodshed of Christ in our behalf. I am cleansed not with anything else but with His shed blood.
