"Covenant Failure – Second Table" Part 1

Israel has failed to love God with all their heart, soul, and strength. Now the author of Judges shows that Israel has failed to love one another. They have violated the second table of the law as well as the first. Again, we find as we move through this passage that this occurred not at the end of the period of the Judges but at the very beginning. Israel has always deserved God's good and righteous judgment. This horrific episode in the history of Israel shows their desperate need for a king who can save from sin. This sermon calls us to trust in Jesus Christ who gave His life for all those who rest in His perfect sacrifice for others.

Covenant Failure

This passage brings us to the last major section in the book of Judges. In it, we hear the story of a man, a Levite, and a tribe. The story lays out for us the utter failure of Israel to keep the first table of the law. As they mix pagan ideas and forms with their worship of God, they bring harm to themselves and to those around them. This sermon calls us to put our trust in Jesus Christ, the covenant keeping king who lived a life of obedience for us, died in our place, and now rules over us for our good.

The Death of the Deliverer

This passage gives us the famous story of Samson and Delilah along with Samson's death as he pushes over the pillars of the house causing his own death along with the Philistines who had gathered to worship their false god. Perhaps one of the most famous stories in the Old Testament, we must not lose sight of the intention of the author to focus on the concept of kingship in Israel. God displays the importance of His glory even as He shows His grace. This sermon calls us to rest in the Deliverer who conquered death through the weakness of death that we might know the grace of God and glorify Him.

A Hard Saying

After drawing out from his disciples the confession of his Messianic claim, Jesus proceeds to tell them how that claim will be treated by the authorities. It will bring him much suffering, and finally his rejection and violent death at the hands of the Sanhedrim, from which he will be raised after three days. Peter regards this as a confession of defeat and as vacating the claim just made; he takes Jesus aside and begins to rebuke him. But Jesus, recognizing in this the spirit of the Temptation, meets rebuke with rebuke, telling Peter that he is acting the part of the Tempter, and that he reflects the mind of men, not of God.

The Work of the Deliverer

God wins. This is the clear teaching of the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ and it's the clear teaching of this passage. Much of what we have been waiting to hear from the beginning of God's work through Samson in chapters 13 and 14 comes into view in chapter 15. God has previewed His work by the Spirit upon Samson. Now He shows His power through His deliverer in plain view of the Philistines and the Judeans. This sermon calls us to wait while God pursues the salvation of His people through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Deliverer's Secret

In this passage, God works through the Spirit led son who was promised to the wife of Manoah. The author again shows his ability to weave together a story that grasps the imagination and draws in the hearer. In the hearing of this story, we must not miss the point of God's work in this small beginning of the deliverance of His people. This sermon calls us to trust God's provision of Jesus Christ as our deliverer, even though we cannot see all that He is doing and will do to save all those who trust in Him.

The Last Deliverer

The Messenger of the LORD announces the birth of a deliverer. In spite of Israel's ongoing unfaithfulness, God will carry out His predetermined plan for the promise of salvation through a representative, a mediator, a king to come. Through the work of Samson, God will further teach His wayward people about His character and the provision He makes for their need. This sermon calls us to rely on the trustworthy Word of God revealed to us from heaven in Jesus Christ.

Insufficient Deliverers

Three more judges are listed in between Jephthah and Samson. These judges, called "minor" for the lack of additional information, lead the people of God. They appear briefly, live their lives, serve for a time, and then die. The author provides us with very little detail. What the author tells us about them and what he does not tell us reminds us that we too are frail and likely our names will be forgotten to history. This sermon calls us to trust in Jesus Christ who has defeated death.

Following God's refusal to any more deliver Israel He raises up more leaders to accomplish His purposes. The full rejection of Israel has not yet come. God will preserve the nation for the covenant with David and to bring the Messiah, the Christ. The accounts of Jephthah and Samson end in tragedy. God continues to show that the only way of salvation must come from Him. This sermon calls us to give up our reliance on human strength and use the means God has given to strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ.

A Question About Jesus

Ever since the disciples first left their nets to follow Jesus, the question of Jesus' identity has been pressing upon them. Mark's readers have been given a privileged insight into who Jesus is in the revelations of the prologue (1:1–13), but the disciples have no such inside information and have been left to work out for themselves what the events they have witnessed and the teaching they have heard imply about the person they recognize as their teacher. The crowds who have remained 'outside' have been even further from fully grasping the significance of what is happening. Now it is time to bring the Christological question into the open.

Leading the Blind

This incident, which is recorded only in Mark, takes place at Bethsaida ("house of the fish") located on the east bank of the Jordan River, where it flows into the Sea of Galilee. At this place, some people brought a blind man to Jesus for healing. Jesus led the man outside the village. The withdrawal from the city was probably to avoid the crowd's gaze and clamor. This is the only example in the Gospels of a healing in two stages. There is symbolism in the two-stage healing. The disciples, like the blind man, had been "touched" by Jesus and had received a preliminary blessing. Their spiritual insight, however, was far from complete. They, too, needed a second touch.

Jesus' Warning

This passage sheds light on the minds of the disciples. They were crossing over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, and they had forgotten to bring bread with them. The disciples speak about physical bread; for Jesus, bread is the metaphor for a greater truth. Even in their concern for material things, the disciples have quickly forgotten what Jesus can do. They have forgotten that he provides not only enough, but abundance ("leftovers"). Miracles and parables have a parallel function in Mark. To those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, both miracles and parables demonstrate the power of the Kingdom of God. But those without ears hear only the parables and do not understand the secret of the Kingdom.

The Context of Deliverance

Things in Israel are getting worse and worse. Rather than remembering the evil that followed Gideon, Israel runs headlong into further idolatry. They increase their violation of God's covenant by worshiping that which should not be worshiped. In this passage, God provides Israel with a serious and solemn warning of their danger in rejecting Him. This sermon calls us to persevere in repentance, not to keep our salvation, but because we have the security of salvation in Jesus Christ.

In this short account of two of God's deliverers, the author of Judges provides us with a short respite after the chaos and disruption of Abimelech. While we may not find these few verses very exciting, we have the opportunity to slow down and consider how God provides for His people. This sermon calls us to focus our attention on the Prince of Peace as the only place of safety and security in a world stained by sin that is passing away.

The Anti-Deliverer

The story of Gideon's son, Abimelech, moves us to the other side of the author's consideration of kingship in Israel. Abimelech's story is purposefully arranged as a contrast to the account of God's victory over Jabin and Sisera. This shows the danger of trusting in a king who brings a curse on himself and on the people. This sermon calls us to look to the Lord Jesus Christ alone for rescue from the depravity of our own hearts, the curse of sin we inherited from our father Adam, and from the wrath of God on all ungodliness.

The Disputing of the Pharisees

The Pharisees (2:24; 3:6; 7:1, 5), along with the "scribes" (2:6; 3:22; 7:1, 5) and the "scribes of the Pharisees" (2:16), have consistently appeared in an adversarial role to this point in Mark's narrative. Their appearances have exclusively involved either issues surrounding the Law or the questions of Jesus' authority. Issues surrounding the Law have had to do specifically with purity issues and sabbath practices like eating with sinners, reaping on the sabbath, healing on the sabbath, and eating with defiled hands. They have questioned the authority by which Jesus ministers, forgives sins, and casts out demons. Here we have to do with the authority, the need for Jesus to authenticate himself.

Provision for the Multitude

The report of the miracle performed on the deaf and dumb man seems to have gathered a multitude about Jesus in Decapolis. They had been with him three days, enough to exhaust whatever provisions they had brought with them. For Mark, the feeding of the five thousand seems to symbolize Jesus' provision for the Jews; the feeding of the four thousand, his provision for the Gentiles.

"The Kingly Deliverer" Part 3

In this last look as the nature of kingship in Israel the author of the book of Judges provides a warning to God's people. Gideon fails to meet the requirements for kingship laid out in Deuteronomy 17. His actions expose Israel to idolatry rather than keeping them in covenant with God. Israel must seek a king after God's heart rather than one like the nations around them. This sermon calls us to greater confidence in the mediator provided by God for the salvation of His people, our king, the Lord Jesus Christ.

This passage continues the reflection on kingship in Israel through the life of Gideon. As Israel thinks about kingship and the kind of king that God would have to rule over His covenant people, they must not look for a king who is like the kings of the nations around them. As a people in covenant with God they must have a king who fulfills the design of the covenant to bring glory to God. This sermon calls us to reject human ideas of strength and rely on God's deliverer, Jesus Christ.

This passage introduces us to the central leader of the book of Judges. Gideon comes closest to the ideal of the king that Israel so desperately needs to stand between God and the people. In our first encounter with Gideon, we hear God dealing with the central issue of Israel's covenant-breaking: their idolatry prevents them from hearing God. This sermon calls us to rely on the Lord Jesus Christ for our peace with God.

Even as Miriam led Israel in the worship and exaltation of God following the destruction of Pharaoh's best charioteers so now Deborah leads God's people in singing a new song. New songs were often composed after a great military victory. Beyond common practice, Deborah and Barak use this opportunity to worship the living God of heaven and earth. This sermon calls us to rejoice, exalt, and worship God for the matchless rescue which Jesus Christ accomplished for us in triumphing over all His and our enemies.

Another generation of Israelites fails to keep the covenant that God has made with them. In mercy, the LORD provides an oppressor to turn their hearts to Himself, hears them in their groaning, and sends them a deliverer. While this account presents us with several characters who work together to deliver Israel, it is the LORD who goes before them and accomplishes victory for Israel. This sermon calls us to trust in Jesus Christ, the only one who can accomplish the victory over sin, Satan, and the world that we need in order to have peace with God.

After Ehud, and sitting here right before Deborah and Barak, Shamgar seems a little anticlimactic and easily forgotten. But a few notable things about Shamgar draw our attention to him. And this short note on his judgeship calls our attention and consideration to the character of God in His long-suffering with Israel. Even more, Shamgar provides us an opportunity to consider God's plan of salvation. This sermon calls us to revel in the wisdom of God in bringing glory to Himself through the deliverance of sinners.

As we come to the next Judge in the list of deliverers provided by God to grant Israel relief from their oppressors we immediately sense a shift. While Israel has reverted to their evil idolatry, this deliverer from Benjamin raises concerns. The spiral into Canaanization picks up speed. But his attack on the oppressor from Moab also brings smiles and humor to the situation. This sermon calls us to remember that God saves sinners by first coming down to us.

This passage provides the first account of a Leader raised up by God to deliver His people from those who oppressed and harassed them. We have already heard of the faith of Othniel and the wisdom of his wife, Achsah. In this account God provides a model for the kind of leaders He will send to deliver Israel. But no other leader will do his work as well as Othniel. This sermon calls us to put our faith in Jesus who was anointed by the Spirit to do his perfect work of delivering us from sin, Satan, death, and the perfect anger of God.

In the first section of Judges we heard how the second generation had mixed results in their attempt to finish out the conquest after the death of Joshua. This second section gives us more insight into Israel's need for deliverers. After all of the second generation died, Israel descended into complete apostasy. In spite of this God continued to fulfill His purposes for the people of His covenant. This sermon calls us to delight in God's display of compassion even in the midst of our ongoing warfare with sin. We have the hope of a deliverer who has conquered death and rescues us through His own holiness.

This passage shows the mixed results of their attempts and the response of God to their failures. While there are many reasons for their inability to complete the conquest, the fact remains that they have failed to uphold the requirements of the covenant. In this failure God could have immediately abandoned them or exiled them. However, He has sworn an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This sermon calls us to daily rely on the mercies of God to us in Christ in midst of our warfare with remaining sin.

Introduction to Judges

As Israel reels from the shock of Exile, they desperately seek to know why they have been cast out of the Promised Land. The book of Judges provides part of the answer, showing that they cannot keep themselves in the covenant that God has made for them and their desperate need for a deliverer. In the Book of Judges, God displays His great mercy. He shows us over and over that we must hope in the deliverer that He will provide. This sermon calls us to rest in Jesus Christ as the deliverer who keeps us in covenant with God by rescuing us from our enemies and keeping the Law of God for us.

The Woman Who Came to Jesus

The encounter between Jesus and the Syrophoenician woman stands in stark contrast to the controversy with the Pharisees in the preceding story. The previous story revolved around Jewish men concerned with the law. The present story concerns a non-Jewish woman without the law. The tradition of the elders presupposed that there could be no salvation apart from law. In the present story, Mark shows that a Gentile pagan can find in Jesus what the tradition of the elders mistakenly thought could only be found in the Torah.

This passage returns to the theme of conflict between Jesus and the religious leaders (cf. Mark 2:1–3:6). By moving from the concern with externals to focus on what comes from one's person as the cause for defilement, Jesus challenged his opponents with a more radical understanding of purity rooted in one's person. Without disdaining the Law, he called for conduct congruent with God's will, not necessarily defined by the rules and regulations of the Law but indicative of one's relationship with God.

This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea. Brother Jordan picks up from last Sunday with a look at what exactly are the doctrines that were coming out of Nicaea. In particular, looking at Arianism and what the errors of Arianism were, and then showing a comparison of what the orthodox position was, starting with the Nicene Creed of 325 AD and then the Creed of 381 AD, which is commonly referred to as "the Nicene Creed" today.

King Ahaz is assured that God is with His people, to protect and keep them from their enemies. God gives to Ahaz a sign that proves the same. This sign, however, is more than just proof to a doubting king about military or political assistance. It is the very assurance that God Himself will redeem His people by coming to be with His people in the Person of His Son. Our hope in this life is rooted in nothing other than that God came to us. Mere religiosity seeks to raise men to God. Faith understands that God has come to us. May all our hope and joy rest in the knowledge that God is with us.

Mark now underlines once more Jesus' popularity with the crowds, but not with any suggestion that they are becoming true disciples. On the contrary, no teaching or preaching is mentioned. The people seem to be coming for what they can get, healing simply by touching the fringes of Jesus' clothing. People needed to be healed, and they achieved that. They needed very much more, but there is no indication that they pressed for that as fully as they did for physical health.

Worship in Christ

The ambassador of the Lord Jesus Christ gives correction to the local congregation of believers in the Roman city of Corinth. In God's providence we learn much about what we are to do in church and what we are not to do as a church from the errors and sins of this first century assembly of believers. As Paul turns to the matter of worship in this chapter, he provides instruction to correct their misuse of the Lord's Supper. This sermon calls us to remember the seriousness of worship and to delight again in the provision of the Lord's Supper for our good and our growth in Christ.

As the pilgrims of the tribes of Israel go up to the feast at Jerusalem they sing of God's covenant mercy. Many great difficulties fill the time of waiting. Even as they actively walk toward the holy city they cry out to the LORD for help. While we no longer travel to Jerusalem in order to worship God, the priority and focus of this Psalm remains true for us today. We hope in the LORD even as we actively wait for the new heavens and the new earth.

Peter invokes the example of Sarah are an illustration of a wife's submission. He shows us that Sarah also faced circumstances where her husband did not obey God's Word, and yet Sarah trusted God. She did not rely on argumentation, nor on her beauty. Instead, she showed respect to her husband, even when he was difficult. From this, Sarah occupies a place of renown, an example of great faith to all believers.

This sermon continues on with Peter's teaching regarding wives and their submission to their own husbands. Peter's main point is that wives are, by their conduct, to seek to gain a lost husband to the Lord. This will be done by their pure conduct, the source of their beauty, and their confidence in God. However, this advice applies not only to wives, but to all Christians. Our conduct, our virtue, and our confidence in God write volumes that back up our words. These are the means by which we let our light shine before men that they glorify our Father in heaven.

Peter is concerned that the Christians remember that trials do not give an excuse for disobedience. He now turns to the subject of marriage. Whether they had married unsaved men before their own conversion or afterwards, Peter knows that a great deal of emotional suffering can come to Christian women from their marriage. Yet, despite the pain that might be inflicted from an unbelieving or disobedient husband, Peter maintains that the wife's position of submission is still an ordinance of God. In fact, her deliverance from any injustice is best solved through maintaining obedience to God.

Submission And Conversion

As Peter is concerned to make sure that the Christians do not develop bitterness over the injustices shown to them, he points us to Christ. Christ left us an example of how to handle our grief. But He also died for our sins, in such a way that conversion itself is an act of submission to Him. Peter's call for us to remain submissive to proper authorities is not a pragmatic issue. It is one that is rooted in the very nature of our repentance and faith.

Submission To Masters

In commanding slaves to be submissive to masters, Peter is not endorsing slavery or condemning abolition. Rather, he is addressing the individuals Christians as they are in their life. Christianity commands that we follow Christ. Slaves may be unjustly beaten. But so was Christ, and for our sins. We may wish to have justice, but this is not necessarily the path of the righteous in this world. Instead, we are sometimes called upon to patiently and quietly endure great inequities, perpetrated by crooked men. If this was the life of our Savior, it is ours as well.

As Peter instructs to show honor to those in authority, he also gives us the goal of doing so. There are many who misrepresent Christianity, often out of lack of correct information and careful thinking. They expect Christians to by hypocritical, to be anti-social, or to be anti-government. We are accused of hating humanity and freedom. Such men are as baying animals, who need to be muzzled. We can close their mouths and remove from them all arguments and slander by showing that we are, in fact, lovers of moral law and order. When we show proper respect to government and authority, we glorify God from whom all authority flows.

Because the Jewish Christians to whom Peter writes had undergone persecution from the Jewish authorities (and the Roman authorities had not intervened to help), these Jewish Christians would have been tempted to disrespect the Caesar, the local governors — indeed, perhaps all government in general. Likewise, as we see government operating in either inept or ungodly ways, it is easy for us to dishonor those in office. But the office itself is established by God, as His instrument, to maintain order. To disdain all government is to disdain the work of God. Just as we are to fear God, we are also to honor those who have the rule over us.

The Submission Of Christ

Peter's first bit of practical direction to Christians undergoing trials or sorrows is to maintain a submissive attitude. Persecutions and griefs make it tempting to respond with disobedience. Yet, our example in all of this is our Savior Himself. He does not resort to insults or threats, even though He is tortured and blasphemed. To insult us would be His right, since He can say nothing about us that isn't true. To threaten us would be just, since we deserve all punishment and hell. Yet, to save us, He submits Himself to God's will, and quietly and patiently trusts God.

Pilgrim Submission

Peter has ended his doctrinal section, laying the foundation for all that will now come as practical instruction. It is interesting that his first practical theme is that of submission. To those who are suffering persecution, and who must consider themselves as exiles and pilgrims on the earth, Peter advises them to live in submission to all the earthly authorities under which they find themselves. Our heart naturally craves rebellion and disobedience. When we are treated unfairly — or what we consider unfairly — our natural, sinful nature wishes to rise up in revolt and demand fairness. But Peter rebukes this sin in us, and instead teaches us that even unfair treatment is no cause for personal revolt. Submission is not easy. Yet, our pattern is Christ, who suffered the worst case of injustice the world has ever seen, and yet was submissive to His Father's will.

The Day of Visitation

Peter concludes the doctrinal section of his first epistle with a personal plea. He asks Christians to live a life which abstains from lusts; and to live honorably. The first of these focuses on the internal, as lusts war against the soul. The second is external, to give a good witness that brings glory to God. Both are predicated on the notion that God visits men. That is, God is the overseer of the world, and He brings into our lives (both as individuals and as members of communities) both blessing and tragedy. When those times come, our conduct will either bolster our faith and testimony, or it will undermine them.

The lost are those who are willfully disobedient to the gospel. To them, Christ is not precious, but distasteful or repulsive. He is not received, but rejected. He does not fit their preconceived religion, and so He is offensive and set aside. This disobedience is something to which they were appointed in God's sovereignty. In contrast, however, the Christian is chosen by God to a glorious status. We are God's chosen nation. We are kings and priests. We are His people, and are recipients of His mercy.

When we consider the reasons that Christ is precious to believers, it should leave us amazed that there are some who reject Him. Christ offers us a complete salvation, perfect acceptance with the Father, an eternal inheritance and an eternal family. Our home in heaven is a place without lies, corruption, sickness, death, or sadness; and is comprised only of eternal joy and love. Who would reject this? Yet, Peter shows us, not only are there some who reject Christ, but the reasons why they will not hear the gospel.

God’s New Testament Temple

Peter now begins his fifth and last doctrine meant to buoy up the faith of his readers. They have suffered greatly, including being told that their worship was now no longer acceptable to God. Similarly, when Christians come to the true gospel, many unsaved religionists treat the new convert as if they have adopted a strange, cult-like message — and their worship is no longer acceptable with God. But Peter's point is refreshing for us. God's temple is not to be found in a particular city, like Rome, Canterbury, Mecca, Athens, or Nashville. God's temple is not in a physical building, like a cathedral, basilica, or some massive campus of buildings. Rather, God's people are God's temple. His dwelling place is within us, not within a building or city. And when we offer up spiritual sacrifices of praise and prayer, our worship is not meager or embarrassing, but as precious to God as His own Son.

Peter has just told his readers that the relationship created by regeneration is an eternal one. Even if faith in Christ leads to the loss of earthly relationships, we still have the everlasting and endless family of God. While that family will be perfect in heaven, it is far from it here on earth. Our church family is often the place of discord. Peter follows up the theology of the eternal family with some practical directions for maintaining familial love in the here and now.

Peter lays the foundation for Christian brotherly love by reminding us that we are al born again through the same mode, agent, and means. In particular, our earthly relationships are created through the corruptible seed of fallen human nature. But our eternal relationships are created by the Spirit through the incorruptible seed of the gospel. We are everlastingly bound together by our common, spiritual birth.

The Cost of Our Redemption

While we are pilgrims in this world, we must also live a holy life. God does not overlook sin for anyone based merely on their religion. Christ has paid the price of the believer's redemption, so we are righteous and accepted before God. Yet, there is still the fear and reverence owed to God as a Father. If the cost of our salvation was the infinitely valuable sacrifice of Christ, then the odiousness of sin must be equally infinite before a holy God. We must live in reverence of God.

Fully Hoping in Glory

Christians are as pilgrims, exiles, in this life. Just as Israel prepared to leave Egypt at Passover, with staves in hands, clothed for travel, standing ready, so the Christian is commanded to live life here: ready to leave, serious-minded, and fully anticipating the glory to come. This means living a life now that is separated and holy.

Prophets And Angels

Peter encourages his readers to continue in the faith, by showing the great treasure that New Testament believers have. It is probable that some of his readers were accosted with the charge that they had left the Scriptures and its teaching. Didn't the Jews have the Hebrew Scriptures and the prophets? Wasn't the Mosaic Covenant mediated to Moses through angels? How could they leave such a heritage? But Peter shows that New Testament believers have the fulfillment of all that the prophets wrote. We know what those OT prophets tried so hard to know — who Messiah is, and the details of His work. Furthermore, we have a salvation that the angels cannot understand. So, we today must hold the New Testament as dear — the clear light of God's truth, plainly taught and passed down to us.

Rejoicing In Trials

Having just reminded us of the glories of our eternal inheritance, Peter states the obvious — that believers greatly rejoice. This rejoicing, however, has such magnitude as to outweigh the grief that comes to us from various tests and trials. Faith that makes it through the trials is a great gift to present to Jesus at His return. Indeed, it is a gift that is more precious than gold. When our hearts are fixed on seeing Christ at His return, rejoicing in trials is attainable.

Our Hope, Our Inheritance

Peter continues teaching his readers that they are the real Jews, the true Israel. God gave to Abraham an inheritance of the Promised Land. His descendants, by covenant through Moses, inherited that promise — only to lose it through disobedience. This earthly type points to a greater antitype. Those of the New Israel have a greater inheritance, that is not earthly soil but the new heavens and earth. It is not earned by our obedience, but through the obedience, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The inheritance of the Promised Land could be lost. Our heavenly inheritance can never be lost or taken from us. We have every reason to rejoice greatly, even though for now we suffer through various trials.

Peter has told his readers that the foundation of perseverance is a firm knowledge of their gracious salvation by the Triune God. But, he addresses them, not just as "elect", but as "elect pilgrims". Peter reminds them that their trials are a direct and necessary consequence of their election. Being elect means being a pilgrim; the two are corollaries. So, if we are to fight through the temptations of life and persevere, we must recognize that the trials through which we go are part of the Christian life.
