A Storm Battered Ship

Luke narrates how the ship bringing Paul, grain, prisoners, guards and sailors sets sail and suddenly faces a severe storm. We discuss the terminology used by Luke which is in keeping with that of other authors who were contemporary with Luke. Much of it is also in keeping with events which still happen at sea. Of interest is how Paul had warned against beginning their journey that late in the sailing season but they did not heed his advice. Paul was right that they would be endangered, even facing death. However, during the storm an angel of the Lord appeared to Paul and reiterated what was said earlier in Acts that Paul "must" stand before Caesar and that God had granted those sailing with him. We discuss how this is a specific word from the Lord to Paul as His apostle and gave Paul boldness to help as the storm ravages the ship. The details of Luke's narrative are powerful in their descriptive accuracy; he was truly an eyewitness to these events.

Parable of the Landowner: Are We Offended by God’s Grace?

In this message, taken from Matthew 20:1-16, we learn from Jesus' parable of the landowner about how we ought not to grumble against the goodness and graciousness of God. We learn how this parable answers Peter's grumbling in which he asked Jesus, "What's in it for us who have left everything to follow you" (Matt. 19:27)? Jesus' parable of the landowner explains why God's goodness and graciousness should be the basis of our life and trust rather than something we suspect of injustice or unfairness. Come and hear for yourself why God's goodness and gracious character is unimpeachable before mankind.

In this second installment in Proverbs 10:12-18, we learn that the righteous must grow in wisdom through the knowledge of Scripture alone. We also learn that the righteous must be willing to cover over sins against us and guard against slandering others. We also touch on some systematic theology topics regarding the Trinity and the person of Christ.

Victory Over Death

Paul addresses death as a defeated foe as he uses the technique of personification. This defeat happens when the perishable 'puts on' the imperishable. These passages are often cited at funerals and so are familiar to most people. We unpack the significance of them for each believer and make practical applications for the lives of people who have faith in Christ. The resurrected Christ is the first-fruits from the dead and His promises assure us that the "sting" of death no longer applies. This is because the "stinger" is removed from what would be a venomous creature. These analogies piled together serve to convince those in the church at Corinth that they will be radically changed for eternity at the future resurrection. Because we have these promises, our work in the Lord is never vain or literally 'empty'. Thus, we must be strong and steadfast in our service in the body of Christ.

In the first part of today's message, from Proverbs 10:12-18, we learn to cover other people's sins against us rather than hold them against them. We also learn that growing in knowledge and wisdom is a call to believe and learn the Scriptures. We spend the remainder of our time giving a biblical case for "Sola Scriptura" as the only means by which we can have truly "transformed minds."

Paul Sets Out to Sea

This lesson is about the people and places Luke covers in his narrative about Paul's trip by sea to be taken as a prisoner to appeal to Caesar. The timing of this sea journey is such that the weather is a problem as the season for sea travel is about to end. Luke goes into great detail about the people and places of this first leg of their journey. Luke was obviously an eyewitness who was with Paul on this trip. In class, as I cover these verses, I showed slides of the type of ships and the places mention by Luke. The slides have captions which I read helping us understand the nature of this journey. It likely happened in October of 59 AD when they got to Crete and a decision was made to try to go on. The details show how careful and thorough Luke was an eyewitness writer. There were other prisoners who probably were being taken along to die in the Roman games for the amusement of people in Rome. Paul had special status as a Roman citizen whose appeal would be heard in Italy. He interacts with the centurion named Julius who was in charge. Paul warns of danger but it is decided to go on despite the lateness of the season.

In this message, taken from Matthew 19:27-30, we learn that suffering now for Christ will be well worth in light of the glories of the kingdom that will come when He returns. We also learn that the nation of Israel will be reestablished, and that those who claim the church has replaced Israel are clearly wrong.

Paul Testifies Before Agrippa II (Pt 7)

This class concludes Paul's testimony in Caesaria before Agrippa. The next chapter will begin Paul's dangerous journey by ship to Rome. Here Paul makes his appeal not so much about legal matters, but about the Prophets of the Scriptures and whether Agrippa believes them. This turns into an appeal for faith through verbal interaction with King Agrippa II. Agrippa remarks that in a short time Paul will convince him to be a Christ. Paul speaks of his wish that not only Agrippa, but all who here him will become like he is, i.e. a believer in Christ. We spend some time discussing the often-controversial issue of whether there is a conflict between the wish for all to be saved and the fact that only some are. We cite various passages which are pertinent to this issue. In God's common grace He gives even those who hate Him time to live out their lives with opportunities to turn to Christ. Yet most never do. We have a lively discussion of this matter. We also discuss the issue of God's providential will and His revealed, moral will. Christ spoke tangibly to Paul that he must visit Rome. This is not the case for those who live after the times of the apostles. As we live under providence, we have Christian liberty and God still brings us to His desired place for each one which is ultimately to be conformed to the image of Christ.

Follow the Creator, Not the Creation

In this message, taken from Matthew 19:16-26, we witness Jesus' interaction with the "Rich Young Ruler." In this encounter, we learn how the idolatry of the young man keeps him from wanting to serve Christ the Creator and instead serve his riches (part of creation). We also witness Jesus lovingly use the Law of Moses in the attempt to convict the man of his own sinfulness and need for the Savior. We conclude from this message that the only way out of remaining idolaters is for people to be converted by repenting and believing the gospel. Come and hear for yourself why this salvation is purely a gift of God.

Ruth Finds Favor in Boaz's Eyes (Pt 3)

Previously Boaz had demonstrated kindness toward Ruth through his words—inquiring about her with his servant (Ruth 2:5–7), exhorting Ruth to glean in his field with his maidservants and to drink from the water drawn by his young men (Ruth 2:8, 9), and comforting her with words of kindness (Ruth 2:11, 12). Now, at mealtime, Boaz shows favor to Ruth through not just his speech but his deeds. First, he invites her to share a meal with himself and his workers and provides her with enough food to satisfy both Ruth and her mother-in-law (Ruth 2:13, 14). Second, he instructs his young men to allow her to glean freely in his field and admonishes them not to mistreat her (Ruth 2:15, 16). Boaz's kindness toward Ruth embodies Yahweh's abundant love and provision for a Moabite widow who fears and serves him.

The Perishable Will Be Changed

In these verses Paul gives details about the change that believers will experience in the resurrection at Christ's return. There will be the sounding of the last trumpet which will accompany the dead being raised and those believers who are alive being changed. This section emphasizes the fact that our eternal inheritance means the perishable body being changed to an imperishable one. We discuss the significance of the important theme of inheritance. The believer's inheritance is mentioned often in Scripture and is linked to the kingdom of God. Those who do not believe in Christ shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Believers will. We point out how essential God's promises are for the Christian life. It is necessary that we believe God's promises for eternity and not assume everything important has to happen now. Our mortal bodies will "put on" immortality. This is God's promise. We also warn against presumption which thinks that no moral change now is necessary. We reference Paul's teaching in 1 Corinthians 6 which indicate that ungodly, immoral people will not inherit the kingdom of God. Yet those who are in Christ are made new by God's power and live differently.

Yahweh God's Creation of Man and Woman in the Garden

At the outset of "the generations of the heavens and the earth" (Gen 2:4 ESV), Yahweh God resolves two notable absences in his creation. The first is the absence of man to cultivate the plants (Gen 2:5). Thus he forms the first human ('adam) from the ground ('adamah) to work the ground ('adamah) (Gen 2:7). The second absence is that of the woman to help the solitary man as his counterpart (Gen 2:18). Thus God makes the woman ('ishah) from the man ('ish) to help the man ('ish) (Gen 2:22, 23). Only through the creation and marriage of man and woman is humanity able to fulfill their stewardship to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Note that the class discussion helps clarify that the man and the woman were indeed free to eat from "every tree of the garden," including the tree of life (Gen 2:16; 3:2, 22; Rev 2:7; cf. Rev 22:2, 14, 19). The sole prohibition, of course, was the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Gen 2:17).

From Dust to Heavenly Image

These verses continue the Adam/Christ analogy in regard to our promised, resurrection bodies. Paul uses ideas from Genesis 1 and 2 to discuss the "man of dust" which he contrasts to the "man of heaven." The dust reference is from Genesis 2:7-8. Adam's name means 'earth' in deference to the material God used in creating him. Jesus did not come from dust but came from heaven as we show from references in the Gospel of John. We learn that all humans, like Adam, are of 'dust,' Yet those who turn to Christ by faith and are born of the Spirit have the promise of the future resurrection where we become people of heaven suited for new Creation. Those "of heaven" are people of faith who believe the promises of God. This involves the promise that we will be conformed to the image of Christ. Paul references 'image' which alludes to the Genesis creation account as well. Humans are meant to bear the image of God, but sin has distorted that image. We cite material from Romans 8 to show that believers are destined to be conformed to the image of Christ at the resurrection. We share and overview of key promises found in Romans 8:17-23.

Contrasts Between Sown and Raised Bodies

This section is based on the Adam/Christ analogy which was introduced in 1 Corinthians 15:22. Adam introduced sin and death to his descendants. Christ brings resurrection life to all who are His through His work of grace. The Corinthians were concerned with decaying bodies being raised and some questioned whether the dead are raised. Paul's answer is that those who are Christ's will be raised with bodies which do not decay. They will be raised "incorruptible." We discuss implications of this found in this section of scripture. The future resurrection life will not be static, but will flourish with eternal glory in the new heavens and new earth. Adam was a living soul who sinned; Christ is the "last Adam" who is "life giving." This sermon explains the Biblical terminology in this section and makes important truths clear. For example, we show that when Paul speaks of a 'spiritual' resurrection body he does not mean a mystical or non-tangible body. He means that our resurrection bodies will be perfectly suitable for the work of the Spirit in glory. They will be like His resurrection body which ascended to heaven after have been witnessed by the disciples. We emphasized our future hope as believers is a hope grounded in Christ's resurrection and God's glorious promises.

Paul Testifies Before Agrippa II (Pt 6)

The Roman governor Festus heard Paul testifying before Agrippa II and accused Paul of being out of his mind. Paul's response was that he was rational and spoke words of "sober truth." Paul also stated that the King knew that these things were public truth since they were "not done in a corner." This class shows from Luke/Acts that the events which comprise Luke's narrative are stated as profound, verifiable, facts which happened before witnesses. Luke tells us where and when the actions of God in history took place. We discuss the contemporary tendency to downplay the truth by relegating religious claims to mere states of mind. The Bible claims that God created humans as rational people, bearing His image, and accountable to truth. We need reason so survive on the earth and cannot escape accountability to God by escaping from reason. The apostles claimed that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead and that this event made all men accountable as Paul stated in his address to the philosophers in Athens. The gospel is both sober truth and public truth. We are to boldly proclaim it and not be deterred by they semantic tricks which make all statements relative to the thinking of the person hearing them. The fact is we can know the truth and are accountable to God to believe the truth and turn to Him.

The Battle over Borders: An Examination of Open Borders and the Future Apostasy

In this topical message we explain biblically why it is moral for governments to control their borders and why it is immoral to pursue open borders. We first prove from Scripture that the passages social justice teachers use to guilt Christians into pursuing open border and mass illegal immigration policies are taken out of context. We prove that neither the old nor the new covenant demand that nations have open border policies. Next, we prove from Scripture that God ordains borders and that one day there will be a future rebellion in which the world will give their allegiance to antichrist under a "borderless" world system. Come and hear why the desire to have a borderless world is true rebellion against God.

Paul Testifies Before Agrippa II (Pt 5)

This class shows how Paul spoke about repentance as part of the gospel when he testified before Agrippa in Acts 26. We trace the theme of repentance through Luke/Acts. Early in Luke John the Baptist preached repentance as preparing for God's coming One. In Luke 24 Jesus included repentance as a theme in His commission of the apostles. In Acts 2 Peter preached repentance in his sermon on Pentecost. Here Paul is still preaching repentance when he testifies before King Agrippa. We discuss the meaning of repentance and how true repentance as part of responding to the gospel is a gift of grace. Repentance in this context is not a work of man to prove superior piety, but truly turning from serving darkness and Satan to serving Christ and His light. It is a change of spiritual domains accomplished by God's grace. We also look at Messianic salvation as predicted in Isaiah 53. The substitutionary atonement that would be accomplish by Jesus Christ was predicted centuries before it happened in history. The gospel is not about making things better through political accomplishments, but being rescued by God from the path to eternal destruction.

In this message, taken from Matthew 19:13-15, we examine how Jesus' interaction with children functions as an object lesson for His disciples and for all of us. In this encounter, Jesus uses children as an object lesson of what we as believers should be. The point Jesus is making is that we should be humble like children as opposed to arrogant like the Pharisees. Come and hear for yourself why humility and reliance upon God's grace should characterize the attitude and life of the believer.

In this message, taken from Matthew 19:10-12, Jesus answers the disciples' question regarding remaining unmarried. Jesus explains that remaining single is only for some people whom God enables to remain faithful while restraining their sexual desires. We examine in our applications why it is evil to forbid people from getting married, but we also explain how the apostle Paul teaches that remaining single can be a blessing as a person is free from family obligations to serve the Lord. Finally, we explain that whether single or married, we should all strive to be faithful to Christ, serve Him, and live for His eternal kingdom.

This class reviews the key theological themes which Paul preached to Agrippa II showing how profound they are. The theology Paul preached to this secular king is central to the truths of Biblical Christianity. We make an application to the seeker movement in evangelicalism which claims that theology should not be preached to the church if we want to have church growth. Typical religious consumers are not interested in theology and so not see it as relevant. Yet Paul saw it as so essential he preached key theological truths to a pagan king. We then trace these same truths through Luke/Acts starting early in Luke. Going from light to darkness was spoken by the father of John the Baptist in Luke 1:78-79. Repentance is also taught throughout Luke/Acts. Forgiveness of sins, sanctification, and serving God with diligence through changed lives are also taught. Paul preached these truths to Agrippa without fear or shame. Therefore, those who claim to be evangelical should do so as well. This class continues to lay out the narrative unity of Luke/Acts. The fact is that the church is always growing every time God adds someone to the church through conversion.

In this message, taken from Matthew 19:1-9, we learn that divorce was never part of God's plan for marriage, but it was provided by Moses to limit the damage cause by the hard heartedness of people who divorced their spouses. God's intention, from the beginning, was that marriage is tp be between one man and one woman, and that union should never be broken up by any person. Come and hear for yourself about how God's plan for marriage protects people and brings Christ glory.

After returning to Bethlehem with Naomi, Ruth departs from their abode to glean in the fields. She happens upon the field of Boaz, a relative of Elimelech and a worshipper of Yahweh. Boaz's excellent character is repeatedly demonstrated through his blessing of his workers; his inquiring about Ruth, the young Moabitess in his field; and his provision for her sustenance and protection. Their seemingly chance encounter has been orchestrated by Yahweh, the God of Israel, to bring about his covenantal blessings, promises, and everlasting reign.

In this message, taken from Matthew 18:18-20, we learn how Jesus has given the church both the authority to bind and loose as well as the privilege of having our prayers answered. We examine how binding and loosing is about determining what is morally prohibited and what is morally allowable under the terms of the New Covenant. We also learn that our privilege of having God answer our prayers is directly linked to our praying according to Christ's character and will. Come and hear how believers are to exercise their authority and privilege during these last days.

In this Sunday School message, we examine from Old Testament passages like Exodus 3:1-6 and Judges 6:11-24 evidence that the angel of the LORD is actually the preincarnate Jesus Christ. We have a robust discussion about the nature of the Trinity, and how we can see evidence for the Trinity even prior to the New Testament canon being finalized.

In this message, taken from Matthew 18:15-17, we examine the three steps involved in church discipline. We learn how church discipline is done to both preserve the purity of Christ's church as well as for the restoration of wayward believers. Come and hear for yourself why Christ has ordained church discipline for the protection of His people and for the glory of His name.

In this topical sermon, we prove that God must exist to create the universe, and we prove that the God who exists is the God of the Bible. We focus the last half of the message on how the prophecies of the Old Testament prove that Jesus Christ is God, and that He is the Savior of all who would trust in Him.

In this message from Proverbs 10:6-11, we learn how the wicked cannot control the violence which proceeds from their lips. We also learn that this violence comes upon those who do violence while those who are righteous receive blessings from those around them. Further, we focus on pantheism and panentheism and the evils associated with them in our section in systematic theology.

Diversity and Glory in Old and New Creation

Paul introduces and answers two questions which likely came from some in Corinth who had doubts about the future resurrection of the body. They are "how" and "what kind of body." We carefully follow the details of Paul's answers and show from Scripture that God has promised to provide a resurrection body for each believer that will be suitable for the future glory God has planned. Paul uses several arguments by analogy to show that the problem of the Corinthian skeptics was their doubt in what God has done and revealed. The present creation shows God's glory and the new creation which will prevail after the death of the old will be even more glorious. He gives analogies from plant life, animal life, birds, fish and human life. God gives bodies designed for the particular environment of each type of life. It follows that since Christ in His resurrection is the firstfruits, that our resurrection bodies are sure to follow and be exactly what we need in the new reality of future glory. We cite many passages from the Old and New Testaments to explain this teaching. There is diversity and glory in all aspects of the old creation. The new creation God has promised will be even more glorious.

This Sunday School first focuses on Proverbs 10:1-5 where we see a contrast between the diligence of the wise son who brings blessings upon the family and that of the shameful son who brings curses upon the family. We then talk about the importance of the work ethic in both the Old and New Testaments. We end our message in introducing a systematic theology discussion in which we talk about the different views of God.

Christian Ethics in Light of Future Resurrection

Verse 29 in this section contains a reference to baptism for the dead which is one of the more difficult passages in the Bible. This is the case because there is no certainty as to what the practice was and why some engaged in it. We cover the difficulties and the main point which was Paul showing the absurdity of such a practice for those who did not believe in future, bodily resurrection. We explain the main proposals which make the most sense and leave it at that. The rest of the verses in this section contain key realities which show important implications of the future resurrection of the dead. Paul's practice of preaching the resurrection in the context of threats on his life show how important it was to him. If the resurrection will not happen then immoral philosophies which lead to nihilism arise. Many of Paul's rebukes in this section refer to matters from earlier in 1 Corinthians such as claims of knowledge and taking liberties which are sinful and not allowed for Christians. Living in light of future resurrection should motivate Christians for godly living now.

Paul Testifies Before Agrippa II (Pt 3)

As Paul continues his testimony to King Agrippa, he speaks of Jesus' words to him at his conversion which included significant, theological detail. Paul is called to bring the light of the gospel to bear on the darkness which has blinded Jews and Gentiles from the truth. The call of the gospel is to turn to God from Satan. Paul speaks to Agrippa about the universal bondage of humans to Satan which implies being under the authority of Satan. All who are 'in Adam' are born alienated from God and under bondage to Satan. Jesus called Paul to open the eyes of his hearers to the need to repent and be sanctified by faith in Christ. We discuss how Luke uses different occasions in Paul's ministry to reveal different aspects of his testimony about conversion. Here in speaking to Agrippa Paul uses the terms "turn" and "repent" in a synonymously parallel way. Clearly those who teach that Paul's gospel did not include repentance have not taken this important material into consideration. We comment on how Paul taught significant theological details to a mixed audience which included a Roman King. How much more should theological truth be taught to Christians at their gatherings! Paul's obedience to Christ caused the hostility of the Jewish leadership in Jerusalem against him. He would not be deterred from his calling!

In this message, taken from Matthew 18:12-14, we learn that Christ, the great shepherd, will pursue each individual believer who strays for the purpose of keeping them in the flock. We conclude from this that God does care for each individual Christian, and we also learn that no believer will ever perish. Come and hear for yourself why you can know you are forever secure in Christ the moment you believed in Him.

Paul Testifies Before Agrippa II (Pt 2)

In this portion of Paul's testimony to Agrippa, Paul testifies concerning the details of his conversion. We cite many facts about Agrippa II and his place in Jewish history, including that he reigned in that part of the world all the way to 93 AD. He was king during the time when the temple was destroyed in 70 AD. His interactions with Jewish history are extensive. At this hearing Paul was able to share freely about his conversion from Judaism to Christ. Saul had been violently opposed to Christianity and the Gospel. Jesus confronted Saul and called Saul's attacks persecution against Christ Himself. This leads us to a discussion about corporate solidarity in Biblical thinking. Jesus told Paul that he was to testify about things he saw and would see. We examine the word horaoo_ which is Greek for see as a verb. It is used also in 1 Corinthians 15 for qualifications for apostles, they had seen (horaoo_) the Lord. The Lord also appointed Paul (Acts 26:16). Paul's conversion leads us to a discussion about the nature of conversion and the issue of monergism versus synergism. Paul's conversion was clearly a work of God alone. Paul was fully hostile to Christ and the gospel before God's work of grace to convert him.

In this message about Paul's interpretation of Psalm 68:18, we learn that the apostles interpreted the Old Testament according to the original meaning of the text. We also show other examples in which the apostles used patterns and types from the Old Covenant in their understanding of what God was accomplishing in the life, death, resurrection, ascension, and return of Jesus Christ. Come and hear for yourself proof that the apostles of the New Covenant stand in solidarity with the meaning the prophets of the Old Covenant placed in the Scriptures.

Paul describes the future subjection of all things to God by interpreting and applying Psalm 110:1 and Psalm 8:6. The subjugation of all God's enemies under Christ includes death, the last enemy. Psalm 110:1 is the most cited Old Testament verse in the New Testament. It is about Christs reign at the right hand of God after His bodily ascension to heaven after His resurrection. Psalm 8:4-6 is about Adam being put over the sub-human creation by God at creation. Adam fell and brought sin and death into the world. Christ is the last Adam who brings victory over all God's enemies. We are assured that if we are in Christ we will raised from the dead and share in His victory over all enemies. We are safe in Christ who brings to fulfillment God purpose for man which had been compromised by Adam. We are safe from all hostile powers as we abide in Christ.

What we do is show that the parousia is a complex event, the details of which are described elsewhere, including Paul's epistles to the Thessalonians. My claim is that the summary statement in 1 Corinthians 15:23-24 proves that the dead are raised which corrects the error of some in the Corinthian church denied this truth (1 Corin. 15:12). The resurrection seemed to be an absurd teaching according to some who held to various Greek philosophies. Paul corrects any who allow Greek philosophy to contradict the scriptures. We see the same issue throughout the book of Acts. That being said, it is important to affirm that prophetic details matter. I spend much of this sermon showing that in many places, including Jesus' teaching in Matthew 24, prophetic details do matter. Part of the proof of this is the detailed way OT prophesies were fulfilled during the first advent of Christ. This theme will continue in the next passages we cover in 1 Corinthians.

The Hermeneutics of the Apostle Paul Regarding Christ's Ascension (Pt 1)

In this message we study how Paul used Psalm 68:18 to refer to Christ's ascension and sending of the spiritual gifts in Ephesians 4:8. We defend the notion that Paul did not distort or rewrite Psalm 68:18's original meaning, but he interpreted Psalm 68:18 in accordance with the original intent given by David. We demonstrate that Paul saw David's ascent to earthly Zion as similar in significance to Christ's ascent to the heavenly Zion. Come and learn for yourself how profound Paul's understanding of the Old Testament really was.

Paul Testifies Before Agrippa (Pt 1)

Paul's opportunity to testify in his own defense is the result of God's providence which brought him safely to this point despite many plots to kill him. We study the background of Agrippa II who was in authority for many years in this part of the Roman empire. His reign went years past the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD. Ironically, the charges brought against Paul by the Jews were that he was an enemy of Moses and had defiled the temple. These were false charges. Agrippa was well versed in Judaism and had his own interest in what Paul had to say. We spend significant time showing how Paul's testimony fit into the larger picture of the narrative unity of Luke/Acts. We read and discuss Paul's past as a Pharisee and how many of those who were now his accusers had known Paul when he was Saul who persecuted Christians. Their hatred of him is likely due to viewing him as a traitor to their cause. Paul cited the hope of the resurrection of the dead in his address (Acts 26:6-8). We cite various passages in Acts where other preachers emphasize the resurrection of Christ. We also discuss how God sent Ananias to pray for Paul with the knowledge that Paul would testify before kings (Acts 9:15-16). Every sermon in Acts mentions the resurrection.

Festus Hands Paul's Case to Agrippa

As we study Luke's account of the Paul's trial before King Agrippa II, we emphasize the historicity of the events in Acts 25. The terminology used by Luke is in keeping with the details of the Roman rule of the Judean part of the Roman empire. Places titles, procedures, and technical legal terminology are accurate. Luke is a serious historian with great writing skills. We also show how the interaction between the Roman authorities and Jewish leadership is in keeping with the key issues. Festus introduces Agrippa to what has happened and why the trial is being held in Caesaria. The Jewish leadership's hatred toward Paul was spiritual and theological, not prompted by Paul breaking any civil laws. Paul's main claim was that Jesus Christ had been crucified and then rose from the dead. Fetus says as much to Agrippa. We also discus God's providence as well as special revelation from Jesus Christ Himself who had appeared to Paul more than once. Various passages earlier in Luke/Acts set the stage for this part of the church's witness to the remotest part of the earth, starting in Jerusalem (Acts 1:8).

In this message, taken from Matthew 17:24-27, we learn how Jesus was exempt from paying a temple tax because He is the unique Son of God who owns His "house." We also learn that even though Jesus and His followers have this unique status as "sons and daughters" with all of the associated privileges, we must be careful not to needlessly offend unbelievers to whom we desire to minister. Come and hear for yourself the wisdom of Christ and how we can both live with the privileges and responsibilities of sons and daughters of God.

The Battle for a Consistent Hermeneutic

This Sunday School lesson focuses on the proper interpretation of Zechariah 14:16-17. We do an overview of Zechariah 12-14 and then focus on how Christ's literal reign from Jerusalem is rejected by postmillennial and amillennial teachers. We prove that just as Christ literally fulfilled the prophecies of Zech. 9:9; 11:13; 14:4, He will also literally fulfill the promises of Zechariah 14:5-21 in which Israel will be brought to faith in Christ as He rules from Jerusalem over the nations.

In this message, we examine what Paul meant when he wrote that Christ died as our substitute "according to the Scriptures" (1 Cor. 15:3). We show that there was not only a direct prophecy of this found in Isaiah 53, but we also see typological prophecies beginning in Genesis 22, 1 Chronicles 21, and 2 Chronicles 3:1 about God providing a substitute at Mt. Moriah in Jerusalem. Come and hear for yourself how in Abraham's day, David's day, and Christ's day, God provided a substitutionary atonement for His people in Jerusalem.

Consequences of Denying the Resurrection of Jesus Christ

There were some in the church at Corinth who claimed 'there is no resurrection of the dead.' Paul refutes this claim by detailing several unacceptable consequences of this claim. The first of these is that Christ is not raised. Paul then explains various logical consequences if Christ has not been raised. These include the vanity of apostolic preaching and faith based on the resurrection of Christ. This also would imply that the apostles were false witnesses about God by claiming that He raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Those deceived in Corinth on this matter were listening to false teaching which is fatal to the Christian faith. Paul said that if their claim is true "your faith is worthless and you are still in your sins." In this sermon we show how logic is essential to being human and making necessary category judgments. Paul uses a type of argument called reductio ad absurdum which assumes the truthfulness of the opponent's position and then shows that it leads to an absurdity which cannot be accepted as true. In today's world many versions of religion and philosophy are grounded in nothing more that romantic idealism with no foundation in reality. This amounts to baseless hope and heading into eternity in bondage to sin and facing judgment. We preach the gospel which is validated by the resurrection of Christ in history and verified by eyewitnesses.

Paul Before Festus in Caesarea

In this class we continue to study Luke's narrative of Paul brought before Roman authorities at the instigation of Jewish authorities in Jerusalem. They had accused Paul of stirring up trouble by speaking against Moses and the temple. These were false charges. Festus was a new governor over Judea and took up this case quickly. The Jews wanted Paul brought to Jerusalem but Festus would not grant that. The case was heard in Caesarea which was the capital of Judea in the Roman way of governing. We talk about theological issues and how Luke lays out the issues in Luke/Acts. Paul would be the one Jesus chose to bring the gospel to Rome. This was revealed earlier in Acts 23:11. We make a distinction between special revelation and providence, explaining the difference. Jesus "stood at Paul's side" and spoke to Paul (Acts 23:11). This section of Acts is about the process in history which leads to Paul being brought to Rome. He appealed to Caesar. We also showed a Power Point about the "still small voice" incident in 1 Kings 19:1-14. We show that the actual words from God that came to Elijah were spoken words, not part of the "sound of gentle blowing" (NASB) which many equate with a non-audible inner impression. This is not what happened. We compare this with Sinai where God spoke to Moses. Paul's words from Jesus were audible words with meaning as were those to Moses and Elijah.

In this message, taken from Matthew 17:14-20, we learn from a mistake by Jesus' disciples. Nine of Jesus' disciples had failed to cast out a demon from a man's demon possessed son. Jesus rebuked the disciples for attempting this miracle in their own power rather than trusting in Him. We learn from this the need to abide in Christ rather than attempting life and ministry in our own power. We also learn to rely upon Christ's power by "praying in His name." Come and hear for yourself why we must trust Christ rather than self in life and ministry.

We prove biblically that the "second Elijah" will bring about a national repentance so that the Kingdom of Israel will be fully restored just as promised in the Old Testament prophets. Come and hear for yourself the exciting truth that Israel's coming Kingdom is for all who believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ.

Covenantal vs. Dispensational An Overview (Pt 7)

In this final message on the differences between dispensational and covenantal theology, we prove that Satan is not currently bound during the church age as amillennialists claim. We also prove that the battle of Gog and Magog cannot be the same battle as Armageddon refuting the Amillennial claim that Revelation 20 merely recapitulates what John wrote in Revelation 19. Finally, we prove the "soon" and "near" statements in Revelation 1 and Revelation 20 frame the book with the doctrine of imminence. Come and hear for yourself why we can know for sure that future, premillennial doctrine is taught in Scripture.

Eyewitnesses of the Resurrected Christ

Paul's litany of appearances of the resurrected Christ to apostles and other eyewitnesses shows the supreme importance of the doctrine of the bodily resurrection of Christ. Christianity is not based on mystical impressions, states of consciousness, or fables, but the sober truth of Christ's resurrection from the dead. He was seen by many people after He came out of the tomb and having seen Him is a necessary criterion for being an apostle. Paul lists these appearances in a manner that shows that Paul is unique in his status of having seen the resurrected Christ after Pentecost and is the last who will. This is show by the sequence in verses 5-11: "then, then, then, then, and last of all." Paul also speaks of God's grace which saved him as one who was hostile to the gospel, the church and therefore to Christ. We explain the terminology of "untimely born" from a word that means "stillborn." Yet Paul was chosen by Christ to be the last of His apostles. We cite Paul's sermon in Athens which claims that the fact of the resurrection of Christ makes all people accountable to God to repent and turn to Christ.

The Essential Truths of the Gospel

This sermon covers the key historical facts of the gospel which are given by Paul as truths of 'first importance." Many scholars consider this material to be a statement of faith in the form of an early creed. We carefully cover each of the phrases and tie them to the important, historical realities they reverence. We also discuss the centrality of the substitutionary atonement accomplished by Christ. The conclusion is that the Christian faith is grounded in the person and work of Christ. The truths about Him (died for sins, was buried, was raised on the third day, and seen by witnesses) are foundational to the faith once for all delivered to the saints. We also claim that these truths are so essential that they must be proclaimed with passion. We cannot use various semantic slights of hand to strip them of the meaning Paul ascribes to them in these verses. They are words of sober truth.

In this Sunday School we look at the Amillennial claim that Satan is currently bound during the church age. We prove from the Scriptures that Satan is not currently bound but will be after the future 70th week of Daniel. We examine three of the four primary arguments amillennialists use in order to prove that Christ's cross already bound Satan so that he can no longer deceive the nations. Come and hear for yourself why the amillennial belief that Satan is currently bound distorts the clear intention of the biblical authors.

Redefining the Church: The Means of Grace (Pt 14)

In this class we cite important promises from the Bible about God's relationship with believers and their security in Him. The means He uses to change us as He keeps us safe are revealed in Scripture. Building on the three categories we discussed in part 1 (command from God, promise from God and accessibility) we see that popular substitutes have none of these characteristics. The false practices are usually called "spiritual disciplines." These are not commanded by God, there is no promise attached to them, and they are often very difficult for people to practice. They are contrived by men and not commanded by God. We speak of many examples and cite contemporary sources and books. The mystical replacements for means of grace are designed to enable states of consciousness, not faith in the promises. Being 'conscious of presence' is not the same as believing Jesus' promise "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." We show how pagan the spiritual disciples have become as they push aside the means God has ordained for our salvation and sanctification.

In this message, taken from Matthew 17:1-9, we examine the significance of Christ's transfiguration. We look at how both what the disciples see and what they hear on the mountain proves that Jesus is the Messiah, the Davidic King who must return bodily to reign from Israel over the entire world. Come and hear for yourself why the transfiguration is a foreshadowing of the glory Christ will have at His future Parousia.

This class focuses on the definition and practice of means of grace. We show how means of grace have three essential characteristics: a command from God, a promise from God, and accessibility. We also point out that salvation is by grace through faith and that we do not grow in Christ by works or human innovations. The early church gathered and practiced baptism, the apostle's teaching, the breaking of bread, and prayer. This was the nature of their fellowship. We explain Acts 2:41-42 phrase by phrase including the definitions of key Greek terms. We also distinguish between spiritual disciplines which are popularly taught but are not ordained by God. These practices are discovered by spiritual innovators. Many are confused by romanticism and mystical claims. We have a robust group discussion as we define key issues and read various pertinent Scriptures. This will be continued in part 2.

In this message, taken from Matthew 16:24-28, we witness Jesus preparing His disciples for suffering as they follow Him. We learn from this message that God is sovereign over whether believers suffer and how we suffer. We also learn that God uses our suffering to build perseverance, proven character, and hope. Finally, we learn that suffering for Christ's sake is well worth it since our momentary light afflictions cannot be compared to the everlasting glories that accompany Christ's coming kingdom.

Grounded in the Gospel

In these verses Paul lays out the centrality of the gospel by which the Christians in Corinth had been saved. This sermon carefully expounds every phrase and concept in these two foundational verses. We include key issues from previous parts of 1 Corinthians and their pertinence to chapter 15 on the resurrection. The dangers of believing in vain is pertinent because 1 Corinthians 15:12 shows that some of them denied the resurrection of the dead. If the dead are not raised then Christ was not raised and thus they would have believed in vain! Sound doctrine grounded in the doctrine of Christ and particularly the gospel of salvation must be preached to the church. It is on this gospel which they had heard from Paul, received, and took their stand through which they are being saved. We must also respond in faith to the gospel in order to be saved.

Covenantal vs. Dispensational: An Overview (Pt 5b)

In this 5th installment, we focus on the difference in interpreting the book of Revelation between covenant and dispensational proponents. We show that the covenant theologian often sees the book of Revelation as broken into seven visions that each cover the same time period beginning with Christ's first coming and culminating at Christ's second coming. We prove, however, that the book of Revelation does not simply recapitulate the same time period seven different times, but it shows a progression of chronological time from the beginning of Daniel's 70th week until the coming of the eternal state. Come and hear for yourself how John the apostle structured the book of Revelation and why this leads to a premillennial understanding.

In this message we begin to show how covenant theologians distort the book of Revelation by imposing upon it the label of apocalyptic literature. We show that true apocalyptic literature from the time period prior to Christ's first coming entailed symbolic language that was never defined by the author. In contrast, John defines the meaning of the symbols in the book of Revelation so as to give a definitive, objective meaning to God's revealed prophecies of the future. Come and hear for yourself why the book of Revelation isn't the "dark mystery" so many amillennial and postmillennial thinkers claim it is.

Orderly Worship Is Spiritual

The first part of this sermon gives special attention to verses 34-35 which have always been controversial. At first look Paul appears to silence all women when in church. However, this contradicts what he has already said in key places in this epistle. He said that 'you all may prophesy' with no restriction based on gender. In chapter 11 he speaks of head coverings for women who prophesy in church. If there was a universal prohibition of women speaking, that would make no sense. So to understand what is being said we examine the fact that Paul mentions the law and husbands. Another way of translating the beginning of verse 34 is "keep their properly ordered place." We cite many recent, credible scholars who point out that throughout 1 Corinthians 14 Paul speaks of various restrictions on speech in the church. Women are not singled out. Likely the issue is wives judging their husband's speech in church when judging prophecy. This would publically shame their husbands. Thus they should discuss such matters at home. This interpretation makes sense of this passage in context of the whole chapter and larger Biblical message. In the final verses of this chapter 14 Paul again confronts elitism and requires that the Corinthians recognize Paul's apostolic authority as the one who brought the gospel to them. Merely thinking oneself spiritual does not make it so. We end with a discussion of orderly worship and spiritual worship being fully compatible. Chaos is not evidence of a work of the Spirit.

Redefining the Church: The Word of God & Heavenly Realities (Pt 11b)

Paul uses 5 imperatives in his instruction to Timothy about ministry in the church: preach, be ready, reprove, rebuke and exhort. These imperatives are used in the context of a predicted time when many will not endure sound doctrine. The need for Biblical truth to be preached to the church is never dependent on the prevailing sentiments and desires of various Christians in particular religious communities. Much less is it dependent on the sensibilities of potential religious consumers in society. God's word must be preached because it is God's means of converting the lost and building up the saints. Paul mentioned future (in his day) times when sound doctrine will not be endured. That time is now as many have rejected the teaching of Christian doctrine in favor of practices more exciting and enticing to those who have no interest in the truth. The alternative, according to Paul is that they "turn aside to myths." In our day those myths are typically those of Eastern religion with its mystical practices. We discuss cases of this and how it is necessary to love the truth if one is to be a Christian. We also study the need to believe truth about unseen realities which may be less appealing than the man-made, high tech experiences which are passed off as 'worship.'

Peter Confesses Jesus Is the Messiah

In this message, taken from Matthew 16:13-20, we witness Peter confess that Jesus is the Messiah at Caesarea Phillipi. We learn that Peter's confession of Christ is on behalf of all the apostles since Peter was their spokesman. We learn from this that Jesus promised to build His church on the foundation of the apostles and that even death itself couldn't prevent His plan from being fulfilled.

Redefining the Church: The Word of God & Heavenly Realities (Pt 11)

We also study the need to believe truth about unseen realities which may be less appealing than the man-made, high tech experiences which are passed off as 'worship'.

The Prophetic Calling of Every Believer

This is a topical sermon about the importance of prophecy in the church according to Biblical standards and definitions. This topic is grounded in the series we preached on 1 Corinthians 14 where Paul defines prophecy in the church. Those who prophesy speak to men for edification, exhortation and comfort (1 Corin. 14:3). Each one may prophesy in an orderly manner (1 Corin. 14:31). We cite many other scriptures which define such prophecy and also point to the fulfillment of Joel 2:28 in Acts 2. Prophecy is bringing out valid implications and applications of Scriptures including Messianic salvation and the use of the keys of the kingdom. These keys are pronouncing the terms of entrance through faith in Christ's finished work on the cross. We also cite Luther on this topic in his dispute with Rome. The Roman Catholic hierarchy kept the right of the use of the keys to herself and also silenced the church. Gospel preaching is one of the most important aspects of prophecy in the church. Prophecy must be judged and the key means of judgment is the testimony of Christ. The Holy Spirit speaks of Christ. Anyone with a false doctrine of Christ is a false prophet.

In this message we continue to address the differences between covenant theology and dispensational theology. We explain how amillennial covenant theologians see all of eschatology through the lense "this age and the age to come." Since the Bible teaches there is a present age and the age to come (Matt. 12:32; Eph. 1:21), covenant theologians reason there cannot be a millennial kingdom after the second coming of Christ. We show, however, that the "present age and age to come" is very much at home with premillennial eschatology.

Speech In the Church Must Edify

Paul gave instructions and regulation for the public use of prophecy and tongues in the gathered assembly. The theme of this section is edification. In this sermon we point out that there is no presumption of spontaneity in the use of speech gifts since forethought is necessary to follow Paul's instructions. Spiritual gifts are not status markers but intended to benefit the congregation. Prophecy is given to bring edification to the church and is grounded in the gospel of Christ. Prophecy is not about predicting the future but edification, exhortation and comfort. These are found in implications and applications of Scripture. The use of gifts also assumes self-control. The confusion of out of control meetings does not honor God nor promote the gospel. These gifts are for the body of Christ and not just official church authorities. We point out ways that such prophecy can edify the members of the body of Christ.

In this third message addressing the differences between covenant and dispensational theology, we continue to look at hermeneutic differences in interpreting the promises given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We explain how the promises given to the patriarchs were personal, physical, historical, and will one day be literally fulfilled. Come and hear for yourself why the future promised reign of Christ and the saints from Israel must be taken literally.

Redefining the Church: Scripture Alone Is Special Revelation (Pt 10)

In the first part of this lesson we discuss the fact that bondage to Satan is not about geography or one's environment politically, but is spiritual and relational. This is why patient teaching is prescribed by Paul for those in opposition. Repentance and knowledge of the truth are evidence of transfer from the domain of Satan into kingdom of Christ. We discuss material in Genesis chapters 10 & 11 which involve the table of nations and the tower of Babel. Judgment on Babel results in the table of nations though the chapters are in reverse order. From Deuteronomy 32:8-9, we know that the nations are under the Sons of God (fallen spiritual powers). On the scene of history the nations are ruled by human authorities with national boundaries. It is God's mercy that we see the human leaders and relate to them as taught in Romans 13 and elsewhere. One implication of the current situation is that wherever someone lives on the earth, they can turn to Christ in faith through the gospel and be transferred into the kingdom of God's Beloved Son. We are designed to deal objectively with concrete laws and learn through objective means. Those who yearn for direct contact with the world of the spirits by techniques not taught in Scripture are easily deceived. We are under the authority of Scripture. We also discuss what is and is not valid prophecy in the church. In Numbers there were people prophesying validly under Moses (chapter 11). There was also Korah and others who rejected Moses and wanted to directly speak for God (chapter 16). They were judged. This is analogous to Scripture alone which comes from Christ and His apostles being authoritative. Prophecy which is grounded in Sc

In this message, taken from Matthew 16:5-12, we learn about the problems of the Pharisee's and Sadducee's doctrine. We learn to avoid their cynicism of unbelief in the face of tremendous evidence, and their irrational hatred of Christ that they exhibited during Jesus' earthly ministry. We also learn that the religious leaders of Israel were dedicated to elevating their traditions above Scripture and works above grace through faith in salvation. Come and hear for yourself why the doctrines of the Pharisees and Sadducees are alive and well in many false teachings today, and how we can avoid them in our lives and ministry.

These verses explain how we are to deal with those in opposition who are in bondage to the devil. We are to be patient and bring gentle correction in hopes that God will grant repentance. Paul warns to avoid speculations which will produce quarrels. We spend some time showing why speculations easily become common among Christians and why they are harmful. We do know that evil exists and that evil men and impostors will become worse during the church age (2 Timothy 3:13). It is also true that such persons conspire against the truth. It does not follow that conspiracy theories based on speculations are appropriate for the church. We are not to theorize about what may be happening, but patiently correct error that does happen. We do not know the intents of the heart but do know the difference between truth and error. It is God who grants repentance and this is His means of setting people free from spiritual captivity. Paul's instructions to Timothy are clearly important for the times we are facing in the world today.

We also learn that since the resurrection cannot be seen directly by humans, the Scriptures are the only way we can know of Christ's resurrection and the rest of His many miraculous signs.
In this second message on Covenantal versus Dispensational theology, we examine the hermeneutics of the New Testament writers and how they understood the Old Testament Prophets. We argue that the apostles understood the promises of the prophets in their original context as they were written by their original authors. We prove from this that the literal promises of Messiah's reign from Jerusalem over Israel in the future with His people are still valid. Come and hear for yourself how the Old and New Testament speaks with one voice regarding a future of national, ethnic Israel in God's plan of redemption.

Outcomes of Tongues or Prophecy in the Public Meeting

Paul discusses the negative outcome of many people speaking in tongues simultaneously in a public, Christian meeting. The unlearned or unbelieving might enter and think the participants are raving mad. This is especially concerning since pagan groups in Corinth were known for having raucous, sensual meetings in honor of their deities. Paul does not want Christian congregations dishonoring God through out of order, chaotic meetings where people try to display their supposed spirituality. A better outcome would be orderly prophesying. The visitor who was not a Christian would be called into account and the ideal outcome would be a conversion. This gives us clear evidence that prophecy in local congregations was gospel centered. We discuss important Old & New Testament passages which predict people being called into account by the work of the Spirit. Such prophecy sheds the light of Christ on the darkness of the human heart. Some are convicted and others reject the truth. Nevertheless, we need to proclaim the truth so the there is conviction of the reality of God and the way of salvation. In the church we are to do all to the glory of God.

Signs for Believers and Unbelievers

In verses 18 & 19 of this section Paul reveals that he had the gift of tongues but would not use it in the church. This is like a later section in 2 Corinthians chapters 11 & 12 called 'Paul's Fools Speech." Because the Corinthians were enamored with visions and revelations and made false judgments against Paul based on them, he had to defend himself as shown in 2 Corinthians. Here in 1 Corinthians it was tongues which some used as proof of spiritual status. Paul counters by sharing he also has this gift but will not use it in the public meeting. The gathered church is to teach and worship in the common vernacular. Paul then cites Isaiah 28:11-12 to show how foreigners were used to bring judgment on Israel who had refused to listen to true prophets speaking to them in their own language. This 'sign' was judgment for not listening. In the application in Corinth, the use of tongues which sounded strange and meaningless when heard in the congregation was harming the church which should be hearing valid prophecy in their own language. Such prophecy would be a 'sign' that God was at work among them. In our application we call for pure teaching of God's word for the benefit of the church. Gospel preaching is to accompany such teaching to bring salvation to those who do not know Christ.

Covenantal vs. Dispensational: An Overview

In this Sunday School message, we begin to examine the similarities and distinctions between Covenant theology and Dispensational theology. We explain how each group agrees that there is only one way of salvation through faith alone in Christ alone. We see, however, that there are differences in understanding the continuity between the Old and New Covenants. We explain how Covenant theology typically sees more continuity between the covenants while Dispensationalists typically see greater discontinuity. We also explain the differences in hermeneutics between the Covenant and Dispensational views on the future promises of Messiah reigning in a restored Israel. Come and hear for yourself what these two different theological camps believe regarding important doctrines of the Christians faith.

Understandable & Edifying Corporate Prayer and Worship

This sermon explains various issues about tongues and the need for intelligibility in corporate worship. We deal with the human mind and spirit in worship, Paul's personal, hypothetical example, and the key answer which is conducting public meetings in the common vernacular. We also discuss singing in the congregation which is grounded in terminology and practice found in the Psalms and elsewhere. We are to declare the mighty deeds of God. The most glorious mighty deed is God brining about Messianic salvation for Jews and Gentiles through the finished work of Christ. Christian meetings should not only be in the common vernacular, but be focused on the true needs of the redeemed. Paul's call for edification of the church is not met by those who design services for so-called seekers who do not know Christ and have little interest in the Biblical details of the salvation which all believers have experienced. Those who know Christ are then pushed aside and ironically placed in the "place of the ungifted" which Paul mentions. This should not happen. God should be glorified and believers edified when we gather for worship.

In this second message from Proverbs 10:1-11, we focus on how the mouth reveals what is truly in our hearts. We learn that humans confess with their mouths what they truly believe, and we have a robust discussion about how the means of grace changes our thinking and therefore what we say. Come and hear for yourself why developing a transformed mind is necessary for every Christian.

Rational Communication of Truth

As Paul corrects misuse of gifts including that of tongues, he argues for the need for clear, meaningful communication using words. This may sound obvious to some, but in Paul's day and ours it is not to be taken for granted. Some in Corinth evidently saw the gift of tongues as indication of superior spirituality even if no one in the congregation, including the speaker, understood what was being said. This is not edifying to the church and creates serious confusion. Conversely, the ability for Christians to speak to the church meaningful words in the native vernacular of the congregation is part of God's provision for all to know what God has said and share it with one another. Paul exhorts this congregation to have zeal for the spiritual edification of the church. We cite many passages in the Old and New Testament about God having spoken and that His words are meaningful and binding revelation to humans. We address the current postmodern attack on the validity of language to communicate the truth. The reader does not determine the meaning, but the author. In regard to Scripture, God has spoken through Holy Spirit inspired authors and what He spoke is truth. We must pay attention to what He said. The rejection of human language as valid communication is an attack on humans created in God's image and accountable to God to believe the truth.

Redefining the Church: The Bible, Not Church History, Must Define the Church (Pt 8)

The passages in 2 Timothy tell us that some in the visible church are not vessels which are which are truly honoring to the Lord. Those who do know the Lord, i.e. the invisible church, pursue righteousness and have a love for the truth. We also spend some extended time on the foundation the truth that "God has spoken." This is established in Hebrews 1:1-2 which shows us that God has spoken to us in His Son in these last days. To demonstrate how this truth is under attack, we study current attacks against language itself and how meaning can be conveyed. If all meaning is tainted by the human interpreter, then nothing clear and binding can be gleaned from the Bible. Minus valid, Biblical revelation, it is impossible to make distinctions between vessels of honor and those of dishonor. In the progressive scheme of things, all people are part of a process infused by God which is leading to a future paradise without judgment. This is the consequence of panentheistic philosophy. We cite Brian McClaren and others who promote this. We emphasize the importance of teaching the truth in the common vernacular so that the truth can be understood.

In this message, taken from Matthew 15:32-39, we witness Jesus miraculously feeding Gentiles in the barren hills on the eastern side of the sea of Galilee. We learn from these verses that Jesus is Yahweh, the God of Israel who miraculously fed the Israelites long ago during their wanderings in the wilderness. We posit that the reason Matthew portrays Jesus as healing and feeding both Jews and Gentiles in the wilderness is to show that He is God who can provide every need for His people. Come and hear for yourself why you can trust Christ to meet all your spiritual and physcial needs.

One of the more insidious attacks against the gospel in recent years is the attack against human language as a means of valid, meaningful communication. This issue began in Genesis 2 & 3 where the Serpent beguiled Eve and then Adam into questioning whether the categories of trees from which they were allowed to eat and the forbidden tree in the middle of the garden that was forbidden. The opening attack was "has God said." I cite a section from my own book on the Emergent Church where I respond to sophisticated, postmodern claims that language could not convey valid truth from God to man, or humans to other humans. Even the basic foundation of all language, that A is not non-A at the same time and in the same relationship, is questioned and doubted. The result is that categories are confused and communication through words is rejected as valid communication. Of course, such a claim is self-stultifying since the claim is made in words which are expected to be understood. When human language is rejected then there is no way to test rival truth claims. In fact, knowing the truth is rejected as a reasonable, possible outcome. Rather, mystical, undefined experiences are ends in and of themselves, and assumed to be from God. Romantic idealism replaces, "God has spoken." We make numerous applications to current practices and teachings in progressive churches. Paul's message of "Christ Crucified" is grounded in history, God's mighty work in Christ and God's promises. All these are conveyed by human language.

The evidence in chapter 14 of 1 Corinthians is that some in Corinth used the gift of tongues in the congregation to impress others of their supposed higher spiritual status. Paul corrects this problem by requiring all speech during the church's corporate meetings be done in the common vernacular. Any tongues must be interpreted. The theme in this section on spiritual gifts is the edification of the body of Christ. This sermon emphasizes the importance of valid communication using human languages. There have been various philosophical attacks against the validity of languages to convey meaning which we must see as dangerous. We go to the temptation of Adam and Eve in the garden to show how the Serpent attacked God's words and God's motives. If language cannot validly convey meaning then God's law is meaningless. We do not want Christian meetings to be meaningless. We must know and believe what God has said.

In this message, taken from Proverbs 10:1-11, we examine the wisdom for sons on how to be a man of integrity. We explain how Solomon uses antithetical parallelism to contrast the evil actions and attitudes of pagans with that of believers. We spend time on giving examples from our culture how lies that shed innocent blood or convict the innocent of being guilty are actions that God hates and will one day judge. Come and hear why we are called to have a work ethic, live lives of integrity, and stand for the truth no matter what our culture says.

Pursue Love and Desire Spiritual Gifts

Paul had written in 1 Corinthians 12:31 to "desire the greater gifts" and then in chapter 13 extolled the "more excellent way" which is agape love. Now we take up the theme of spiritual gifts in the congregation. We begin by laying out what has ceased, which is inerrant, binding, authoritative revelation which is found only in the Bible. Spiritual gifts, particularly prophecy, as practiced in the church are based on Scripture and given for the edification of the church. They are never given to impart special status to some Christians as compared to others. We deal with what Paul says about tongues and prophecy which are addressed in these verses. Tongues as a spiritual gift are addressed to God, not to man. Since they do not edify the church because they are not intelligible to the church, they are not for the public service. Neither prophecy nor tongues is necessarily spontaneous. We are gifted so that by love we may serve one another. The key in these verses is edification. We explain what that means and how it happens.

We show from Scripture how baptism symbolizes: (1) regeneration (2) washing away of sins (3) being dead to the old world and alive to the newness of life. Come and hear for yourself why baptism is such an important symbol of what God has done for the believer in Christ Jesus.

Redefining the Church: The Bible, Not Church History, Must Define the Church (Pt 6)

In theology the categories of the visible and invisible church are often discussed. The visible church consists of those who gather in the name of Christ for teaching, worship and fellowship. The invisible church consists of those who truly know Christ and are truly part of the redeemed forever. We discuss these categories and their practical implications. The passages we study indicate that there are those who were thought to be part of the church but are not truly born of God. The Lord knows those who are His, but we can make wrong judgments about this. In many cases, large congregations have few of the truly redeemed as is evidenced by the lack of fruit and sound Bible teaching. Some claim the title "church" but forthrightly deny Christ. We also discuss how children of believers can grow up in church and know what is supposed to be believed, but not truly have a relationship with Christ. Some of the children and grand-children of Christians become leaders who take churches in liberal and unbiblical directions. We show that the Bible predicts this.

Jesus Saves Gentiles Too

In this message, taken from Matthew 15:21-28, we witness Jesus withdrawing from Galilee to Tyre and Sidon where He encounters a Canaanite woman. The Canaanite woman cries out for Jesus to heal her daughter who was cruelly demon possessed. The dialogue with Jesus reveals that Jesus initially purposed to save the "lost sheep of Israel," but He doesn't exclude this woman from salvation either. We conclude from this that God ultimately doesn't care about race, class, and gender the way so many in our culture do today. We learn that what impresses God the Father is only His Son. The only way to be connected to the Son for forgiveness and the assurance of everlasting life is by faith alone. Come and hear the good news that Jesus saves Gentiles too.

Only Jesus Can Cleanse Us From the Inside

In this message, taken from Matthew 15:10-20, we witness Jesus correcting the wayward doctrine of the scribes and Pharisees who claimed their tradition of handwashing prior to meals was necessary to be "clean" before God. Jesus explains that anything consumed into the body cannot make us defiled in God's eyes, and He goes on to teach us that our defilement before God comes from our own sinful heart. Jesus also calls the Pharisees "blind guides" because they eliminated the doctrines of Christ for their own man-made traditions which can never cleans our hearts and make us righteous before God. Come and hear for yourself why Jesus alone can cleanse us from the inside and give us a new heart.

Redefining the Church: The Bible, Not Church History, Must Define the Church (Pt 5)

We study a key passage in Hebrews which addresses Christian gatherings. The author of Hebrews exhorts the flock to hold fast their confession of hope in Christ based on God's faithfulness and His promise to us. We discuss the simplicity of the local church gathered under means of grace. Massive institutions which are now called churches did not exist when Hebrews was written and are not ordained anywhere in the Bible. Simple acts of love and care for one another, prayers to God, Bible teaching, and remembrance of God's promises in Christ are the essence of the local church. Christ promised to be there when two or three are gathered in His name. We look at church discipline and the meaning of binding and loosing in Matthew 18 as well as Matthew 16. Jesus Christ alone is the Head of the church and each member of the organic church is attached to Him. We are heard by Him who intercedes on our behalf before the throne of grace. There is no world headquarters of the church on earth. Christ reigns in heave at the right hand of the father.

Baptism: Our Identity in Christ--Examining the Four Different Views (Baptist)

We begin looking into the Believer's Baptism view in our ongoing discussion about the various views of baptism. In this message we examine how baptism is primarily about our identity in Christ which we received the moment we believed in Him. We also show how baptism symbolizes regeneration, the washing away of our sins, and our death and resurrection with Christ. Come and hear for yourself the significance of baptism and why it's only for believers in Jesus Christ.

The Trial, Crucifixion, Burial and Resurrection of Christ

This sermon is a narrated reading of the events that lead up to Christ's crucifixion, His death on a cross, His burial and His resurrection. The key points from each section are explained in context with serious consideration of Luke's narrative purpose. Jesus was on a trip to Jerusalem to suffer, be rejected, killed, and raised from the dead on the third day (Luke 9:22). After citing the previews in Luke 9, we read the verses on the various court proceedings before the Sanhedrin, Pilate, Herod, and Pilate again. They did not find guilt in Jesus, but the angry mob demanded that Jesus be crucified. Pilate finally handed Jesus over. After reading the text from Scripture we have comments about the significance of each scene as the events unfold. Special attention is paid to the criminal on the cross who repented. It is thematic in Luke-Acts that sinners who repent find forgiveness, eternal life and a place in the future Kingdom. We also see how women are key people in this section who mourn for Jesus, take action at the tomb, and are informed by an angel that Jesus was raised. Many OT Scriptures are fulfilled.

Baptism: Our Identity in Christ--Examining the Four Different Views (Reformed) (Pt 4)

In the message today we continue to wrestle with the Reformed tradition of baptism. We explain how the Reformed tradition believes that infants who have not yet been added to the New Covenant by faith should still be baptized if they belong to believing parents. We show that baptism should only belong to those who are truly partakers of the New Covenant by faith in Christ. We use Hebrews 8 to prove that the New Covenant is different than the Old Covenant in that some members of the Old Covenant community of Israel were not believers. The New Covenant, in contrast, is comprised of all who know the Lord Jesus by faith (Heb. 8:11).
