How can we know peace in time of trouble? Only by knowing God! In Psalm 4 we see David's prayer, David's patience, and David's peace. Only by faith can we know true peace, for true peace is God's peace.

God's Covenant points his people backwards and forwards, to consider what we know and to leave what we cannot know to God. We see in Deuteronomy 29 God's care in the past, his Covenant now, and the peril of his curse in the future.

Suffering is part of the Christian life, and was part of the experience of Peter's readers. How then do we handle it? First of all, we must know what we believe and why. Secondly, we must remember Christ's path from suffering to triumph, one that is ours because we were baptised into Christ.

Deuteronomy 28 confronts God's people with blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. We see here the reward for God's faithful people, the rejection of God and God' rejection that follows, and the reversal of blessing, but we are also pointed to the reversal of the curse in Christ being made a curse for his people.

We are called to live the Christian life, but what does that mean in practice? Peter concludes a section on that subject by first addressing Christian women married to unbelieving men, and then Christian husbands, and finally appealing to his readers to be of one mind in Christ.

The world is in rebellion against God; how then do we understand that God is sovereign? Psalm 2 teaches us just how we are to think, even in the face of the world's rulers raging against God. We the rebellion, God's response, and finally God's rebuke. Christ reigns, and he shall judge.

Christian worship is in Spirit and in Truth, and thus it requires the worshipper to be of the right character. We see in Psalm 1 the character of the true worshipper outlined. We see what he delights in, the difference between him and the false, and the division between godly and ungodly.

Worship is a vital part of the life of God's covenant people. We see in Deuteronomy 26 three aspects of that worship. We see thanksgiving, the tithe that speaks of the solidarity of God's people, and the testimony that we bear in worship that God our God, and that he bears that we are his people.

God is holy, and therefore the Church, his covenant community, is called to be holy. We see in Deuteronomy 23 who is excluded from God's covenant people, the holiness needed as God's army in the world, and how that holiness is seen in not exploiting people the way the world exploits, but in mutual love.

In the opening part of Matthew 27, we are confronted with choices made concerning Christ. We see Judas, who never saw Christ as anything other than a means to an end; we see Pilate, who chose to let others make the choice for him; and we see the mob, who chose Barabbas and his carnal promises over Christ and his spiritual ones. And we see most of all Christ, who chose to go to the cross to save his people.

The Wise Men were determined to worship Christ. They did not treat his birth as a mere curiosity, but as a call to worship, though it meant a long and dangerous journey. We see their desire, the dangers represented by Herod and the people in Jerusalem, and the devotion of the Wise Men when they finally reached Christ.

The Gospel informs how we live. In the last chapter of Paul's Epistle to Titus, he explains how this works, beginning with the question of conduct, and moving on to our Gospel motive for good works. He tells Titus what he ought to teach, and what - and whom - he should avoid.

We see the Sign offered and refused, the Son who will come, and the Sentence pronounced by God. And we see that neither human sin nor human stupidity can prevent God from carrying out his purposes.

As the sadow of the cross deepens, Christ divides peple as never before. Mary's anointing of Christ shows her understanding that he is soon to die, and Judas' fundamentally selfish attitude. So in Matthew 26:1-30 we see the plans of God and man, the differing perceptions of those involved, and the Passover as it gives way to the Lord's Supper.

The world is disordered because of sin. The restoration of order requires God to work, and ultimately requires atonement. That is the message of Deuteronomy 21. We see how an unsolved murder affects society, how war and family disputes create insecurity, and how a disobedient adult son and the punishment of a notorious criminal affect stability. Most of all we see how these things point us to the cross of Christ.

How can we know peace in a world in chaos? Closing his first Epistle to Timothy, Paul speaks of contentment. He is quite realistic; we live in a world of bad jobs, bad bosses, and false teachers. But contentment is not found in things or circumstances, but in Christ. The Christian can be content and know peace because of that, but those who don't know Christ, who pursue riches and love arguments, can never know peace or contentment.

What is it to be ready for Christ's Second Advent? In Matthew 25 we see what readiness means, we see the responsibility to be Christians, and we see the recompense of the end of the age. No-one known when Christ is coming back, but we know that he is, and how we should live.

Church life is life together, and that means relationships. In 1 Timothy 5 Paul counsels Timothy about those relationships. After giving a general principle, he deals with specifc relationships that are more "official," namely the church's support of widows, and issues involving elders accused of serious sin. How is the Church to think about these things?

God is just, and so he calls for justice. We see in Deuteronomy 19 three cases where jusice is called for to preserve life and to punish evil. We see the cities of refuge and the difference between murder and manslaughter; we see the regulation of boundaries that God has set out; and the retribution against false witnesses who seek to pervert the course of justice. And though them all we are pointed to Christ, who bore God's justice for us, that we might be pardoned.

God has given all creation an expectancy to receive what we need from him, and he richly supplies that need. We see this in nauture, as we are reminded in harvest time, and supremely in grace, in the salvation that is in Christ Jesus. Looking at Psalm 145:15-16, we see the expectancy of the creation, the supply of the creator, and the generosity of God.

What is it to be a good minister of Jesus Christ? In 1 Timothy 4 Paul describes a part of that wrk in combatting heresy and teaching the truth. False teachers are danger, and false teaching has both a demonic and a human origin. It is to be opposed by teaching the truth. Paul encourages Timothy not to be afraid, but to go forward in faith.

What is the content of the message of the Christian ministry? In 1 Timothy 1, Paul charges Timothy to teach true doctrine and oppose those who do not. He characterises false doctrine as empty and often law-based, while true doctrine is Gospel-focused and uses the law rightly. Paul himself is a saved sinner, and the Gospel is salvation for sinners through the death of Christ.

In Deuteronomy 16 we read of the three feasts that God instituted with the Old Covenant, which today are all replaced by the Lord's Supper. What do Passover, the Feast of Weeks, and Tabernacles teach us? We see the Passover, Pentecost, and the Pilgrimage of God's people.

The tragedy of Jerusalem was the tragedy of unbelief. We see in Matthew 21:1-22 the Triumphal Entry of Christ, hailed yet unknown. We see the Temple cleansed and made what it ought to be, to the indignation of the religious leaders. And we see the tragedy of Jerusalem, making a fine show, but without faith.

What is it that Christians look forward to? The final clause of the Nicene Creed sets out the Christian hope of the Resurrection and the life of the age to come. We look at what that means, touching also on the question of the intermediate state between death and resurrection.

We see in Deuteronomy 15 the Sabbath principle extended and expounded in the law of the Sabbath Year, and the consecration of the firstborn. It is a principle of rest in God, and enjoying God's redeeming love.

Grace, not status, is what matters in the Kingdom of God. All who are in the Kingdom have received God's grace. Just as Christ came to serve, so we are called to serve one another in our various callings. We have received God's compassion in Christ, and so we follow him. So we see in Matthew 20 a parable about compensation, a contest based in a mistake, and the compassion of Christ.

God has chosen a people and called them into covenant with himself. In Deuteronomy 14 part of the meaning of this fact is brought out and explained. We see the status of God's people, who they are and why. We see the separation of God's people, that they are in the world but not of it. And we see how this fact affects how God's people see their substance, their possessions as gifts from God, and how they employ these gifts.

Christ continues to teach the ethics of the Kingdom of God, showinghow they go against the ideas of the world - even of the religious world. We see in the issue of Divorce what God made marriage as, and God's view of men and women. We see in his receiving of little children and the matter of the rich young ruler how status counts for nothing with God. Finally we see how discipleship is the way of blessing amidst troubles here, looking to Chrit our reward hereafter.

In Deuteronomy 13 Moses calls Israel to be alert to apostasy. He gives three scenarios of the danger, and explains how it is to be resisted. We see first the danger of pretenders to revelations trying to draw people away; second the situation where people we are in close elationships try to draw us away, and thirdly a case where a city of revolutionaries seek to draw God' people away from him. This must be applied to the Church as God's Covenant Community, called to Covenant faithfulness to the faithful God.

Deuteronomy 12 begins a new section in the preaching of the Covenant looking at how God is worshipped.
Deuteronomy 11 sets before God's people a blessing and a curse. God's actions call his people to respond in love to his love. We see the past of God's work in grace and judgement, the providence of God that calls us to trust him, and the promise of his grace and blessing to those who do.

The Gospels all challenge us with the person of Christ. Because he is who he is, everything is affected. We see in Matthew 16 the caution he gives to avoid false teaching; the confession of Peter that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God; and the challenge that brings to follow him truly.

God's blessings to his people do not come by merit, they come through a Mediator. In Deuteronomy 9 Moses reminds the people that they were not delivered because of might or merit, he calls them to remember their past sins, and to recall God's grace to them through his mediation. So he points us to Christ, the better Mediator.

Herod, the would-be king who rules by fear, is himself ruled by fear, but Christ, the true and compassionate King, rules by faith.

Christ taught in parables - but why? Parables both reveal and conceal, they are intended to spur thought, and those who will not think miss their meaning. We see in Matthew 13 the need of consideration in parables, the challenge that the parables answer, and the call for comprehension, understanding, that they give.
