The Gifts and Their Purpose

Theme: Christ gave foundational and continuing gifts to the church so that it may grow to spiritual maturity. Apostles and prophets were given by Christ to the church, and their teachings form an unchanging, divinely established foundation essential for spiritual maturity and unity. In Ephesians 4 and other New Testament passages, we see that the apostles were uniquely commissioned by the resurrected Christ, witnessed His resurrection, and were validated by miracles, establishing their authority and teaching as the bedrock of Christian doctrine. Prophets, while distinct from apostles, were also divinely empowered with supernatural revelation and predictive insight, but their messages were always subject to testing and never contradicted apostolic teaching. We must be on guard against modern distortions of these gifts, particularly in charismatic movements that promote subjective, unverified 'prophecies' or claim new revelations. Scripture alone—inspired, sufficient, and authoritative—is the final and complete revelation of God. Ultimately, the church is called to remain faithful to the apostolic and prophetic foundation, not through human innovation or cultural accommodation, but through humble obedience, continual reliance on the written Word, and the conviction that Scripture is fully sufficient for doctrine, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.

The Victorious Christ

Theme: The gifts of Christ are to be extremely valued because they are the result of the triumphant victory won by Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 4:8–10, we see that the spiritual gifts given to believers are not arbitrary but the triumphant spoils of Christ's victory over sin, death, and Satan. Paul interprets Psalm 68:18 through the lens of Christ's ascension, portraying it not as a mere historical event but as the fulfillment of God's eternal plan, where Christ, having descended into the earthly realm through incarnation and death, ascended in glory to bestow gifts upon His church. These gifts—apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers—are not self-generated talents but divine endowments given to equip the body of Christ for unity, service, and spiritual growth. These gifts carry profound value because they are rooted in Christ's decisive victory, making believers both free from sin's bondage and captives of His grace, called to live in dependence on His power and to engage in the ongoing spiritual battle with confidence. We as believers should have great appreciation of these gifts as sacred, battle-worn blessings meant to be used faithfully for God's glory and the building up of His people.

The Gifts of Christ

Theme: Every believer has a gracious gift from the sovereign Christ and is to use it for God and His church. We see from key passages in Ephesians, 1 Peter, 1 Corinthians, and Romans that spiritual gifts are diverse, supernatural, and intended for service—never self-promotion—and must be exercised with humility, faithfulness, and a focus on others. We as believers need to recognize Christ as the source of all gifts, to identify and actively use our God-given abilities, and to steward them responsibly, knowing we will one day give an account before Him. Ultimately, the purpose of every gift is to reflect Christ's love, foster spiritual growth, and advance the church's mission until all attain the fullness of Christ!

The First Martyr

Theme: Christians should know the redemptive history presented in Scripture culminating in the gospel and be able to relate it to others, knowing their testimony could cost them their lives. Stephen's martyrdom in Acts 7 is a pivotal moment in redemptive history. His message confronts Israel's repeated disobedience—seen in the rejection of Joseph, Moses, and the prophets—and culminating in the crucifixion of Christ, and exposes the nation's flawed understanding of the land, temple, and law. Stephen's polemic, rooted in a comprehensive survey of biblical history, confronts the Sanhedrin with their spiritual blindness, emphasizing that God's presence is not confined to physical places or rituals but is fulfilled in Christ, the true Temple and High Priest. We as believers must know the Scripture and understand the proper use of God's law and our relationship to it through the Lord Jesus Christ. We need to also recognize God's faithful servants and courageously testify to the gospel, even at great personal cost, trusting in the Holy Spirit's guidance and Christ's ultimate victory. So let us not fear man or be anxious but know that Christ stands ready to receive His faithful witnesses while pronouncing judgment on those who oppose Him. If you have not repented of your sin and received Christ, He has made a way for you to be forgiven--turn to Him today!

Jesus the Resurrection and the Life

Theme: The only hope of eternal life is found in Jesus Christ alone. In this passage, we learn that Jesus' delay in coming to Lazarus was not due to indifference but was a sovereign act to glorify God and demonstrate His power over death, culminating in a profound revelation of His identity as the only One who can grant life, both now and in the future. Eternal life begins at faith in Christ, not at death, and true life is not merely existence but a transformed, growing relationship with the living God. In application, we see five truths to consider: Jesus' sympathy for our griefs and sorrows, His sovereign goodness, His deep personal love, the necessity of His sacrificial death and resurrection so that we can have eternal life, and a secured hope. Ultimately, we have a clear choice: to believe in Christ as the resurrection and the life, or to face eternal separation from God. We must ask ourselves as Jesus asked Martha, "Do you believe this?"

Walking in Unity, Part 5

This passage centers on the profound unity of the Christian community, rooted in the triune nature of God and the shared calling to which believers have been summoned. This unity is not a human construct but a divine reality grounded in one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all, who is over all, through all, and in all. Believers are called to live in humility, gentleness, patience, and love, bearing with one another in the bond of peace, reflecting the harmony of the Trinity. We seek to maintain unity, not for cultural or institutional reasons, but because Christ is the sole foundation and the ultimate goal of our lives as believers. Ultimately, true peace and unity are found not in external conformity but in a shared identity as children of our one sovereign Father, whose presence and glory are the source of lasting joy and purpose.

The Proper Fear of the Lord

Jonah 1 teaches us as believers the importance of living in faithful obedience to God's will. Though called to prophesy against a wicked city, Jonah flees in rebellion, only to face escalating divine interventions—first a violent storm, then a warning from the sailors, and finally the discipline of being cast into the sea. We learn that genuine fear of the Lord is not merely verbal but demonstrated through obedience, responsiveness to divine warnings, and submission to God's discipline. In this passage we see the contrast of Jonah's hypocrisy with the sailors' growing reverence. Ultimately, we as believers are called to recognize God's sovereignty, repent when we ignore His call, and embrace His will with humility, trusting in Christ's forgiveness and the promise of restoration, as the story of Jonah points forward to the redemptive power of God's grace.

Theme: Believing the seven confessional statements of oneness, followers of Christ should live out the gospel with an eagerness to walk in unity of the Spirit. Ephesians 4:4-6 centers on the imperative of gospel unity, rooted in the seven 'oneness' declarations, which reflect the Trinitarian nature of God and the foundational truths of the Christian faith. True unity is not achieved through uniformity but through shared identity in Christ, grounded in one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father. This unity is not optional but essential to walking worthy of one's calling, requiring humility, gentleness, patience, and a commitment to glorify Christ rather than self. Believers should seek to live as radical outsiders by confessing Jesus as Lord, even at personal cost. The church should embody this unity in daily life—through attitudes, actions, and public witness—so that the world may see the glory of God in the oneness of His people.

Theme: Believing the seven confessional statements of oneness, followers of Christ should live out the gospel with an eagerness to walk in unity of the Spirit. In Ephesians 4:4-6, Paul focuses on the profound unity that believers have, emphasizing that we are united in one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father. This unity is rooted in the shared confession of the Christian faith and the work of the Holy Spirit, Who unites believers across ethnic, cultural, and social divides. Walking in this unity requires humility, gentleness, patience, and a deliberate eagerness to maintain peace, reflecting Christ's own character and sacrificial love. As believers, we should reject division over trivial matters, and embrace diversity of gifts for the common good, anchoring our hope in the unchanging, eternal promise of God revealed in Christ. Ultimately, the Church is called to be a living expression of divine unity—both now in fellowship and in the future hope of eternal communion with God.

Theme: Followers of Christ should live out the gospel with an aim (an eagerness) to walk in unity by the Spirit. In this passage, Paul calls believers to live out the gospel with intentional humility, gentleness, and patience, rooted in the transformative power of God's grace. True unity in the church is not a human achievement but a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit, grounded in the shared reality of one body, one Spirit, and one hope. We, as believers, should seek to actively maintain this unity through love, enduring one another's weaknesses not out of obligation, but as a reflection of God's enduring patience toward us. Our ultimate aim is to embody the prayer of Jesus in John 17, where the world is drawn to believe in Christ through the visible, Spirit-empowered oneness of His people. Let us examine our hearts, asking whether our actions stem from self-interest or from a desire to honor Christ, and cultivate attitudes that reflect the character of Christ!

Theme: Followers of Christ should live out the gospel with an aim to walk in unity by the Spirit. Rooted in the transformative power of God's effectual grace and grounded in the rich theology of Ephesians 1–3, this calling is not merely a one-time decision but a daily, Spirit-enabled walk marked by humility, gentleness, and patience—attitudes that reflect Christ's own character and are essential for maintaining the unity of the Spirit in the church. Ultimately, it calls believers to examine their attitudes and actions, urging them to pursue Christ-likeness not by self-effort but by grace, so that their lives visibly reflect the gospel they profess.

Doxology

Theme: As believers seek to practically live out the gospel of grace, we must offer sincere heart felt praise and blessing to our great God. Ephesians 3:20–21 centers on the overwhelming greatness of God, whose power is far more abundant than anything believers can ask or imagine, working within them through the same resurrection power that raised Christ. True theology leads not to pride but to doxology—sincere, heartfelt praise that recognizes God's uniqueness, eternal nature, and sovereign glory, which is revealed in Christ and proclaimed in the church across all generations. God's ability to exceed our expectations is seen in Biblical accounts of deliverance, healing, and answered prayer, where His actions surpass even the most fervent hopes, demonstrating His faithfulness and boundless grace. This divine power, not our own effort, enables the Christian life described in Ephesians 4–6, making transformation possible only through God's indwelling presence. Truly in the gospel God has done far more exceedingly abundantly more than we could ask or think. For God took sinners and made them into saints, and for this, He receives all the glory!

Praying Toward Knowing God

Theme: Christians should pray for one another, not only for physical needs, but also for spiritual growth resulting in knowing God in a deeper and experiential way. In v. 19, Paul prays that believers would be filled with all the fullness of God. How do we experience the fullness of God? First, we must recognize the deep love that Christ has for us. Second, we must seek to be like our God by keeping His commandments. Third, we need to find joy in our union with Christ. Ultimately, the goal is not perfection in this life, but a continual journey of growth, dependence on the Spirit, and joyful trust in God's grace, leading to lives marked by peace, holiness, and a longing to be more like Christ.

Praying for Divine Strength

Theme: Christians should pray for one another, not only for physical needs, but also for deep spiritual growth, and believers should desire that spiritual strength. In v. 16, Paul says he prays for the Ephesians to have spiritual strength, and in v. 17, for the believers to have spiritual communion with Christ. This is Christ dwelling in their hearts. He is at home there, and as believers, we walk, live, speak with, adore, cry out to Him, and love Him. Paul prays for the Ephesians spiritual stability in vv. 17-19. In order for this to happen for us as believers, it is vital that we are rooted and grounded in His love and that we strive to understand the vastness of His love for us. As a church, let us be cultivating intimate, prayerful relationships that foster spiritual strength, mutual encouragement, and a shared understanding of God's boundless love, which is the foundation for enduring joy and faithful witness in any season!

Praying for Divine Granting

Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3:14–17, rooted in the profound theological truths of God's grace, election, and unity in Christ, serves as a model for Christian intercession focused on spiritual health rather than merely physical or circumstantial needs. He prays that believers would be strengthened with divine power through the Holy Spirit in their inner being, not by human effort but by God's grace, which is sufficient even in weakness. This spiritual strength enables believers to endure trials, flourish in suffering, and live faithfully, as exemplified by Moses, Paul, and Jesus, who all trusted God's will amid hardship. The sermon calls believers to prioritize praying for one another's spiritual growth, recognizing that godliness—rooted in Christ's indwelling presence and grounded in God's eternal love—is of greater value than temporal well-being. Christians should pray for one another, not only for physical needs, but also for deep spiritual growth, and as believers, we should desire that spiritual strength.

The Faith of the Righteous

In Romans 1:16-17, Paul quotes from Habakkuk 2:4 when he says, "the righteous shall live by faith." Here he teaches about the transformative power of faith. Faith is not mere wishful thinking but a confident assurance grounded in God's revealed character, historical faithfulness, and the redemptive work of Christ. Righteousness is a divine gift, not earned by human effort. Through the story of Habakkuk—moving from despair and complaint to worship—we see illustrated how God sustains faith even in the darkest seasons, not by removing suffering but by renewing trust through His promises and actions. As believers, we need to cultivate faith through spiritual disciplines like Scripture reading, prayer, and meditation, not as mechanical routines but as vital responses to God's ongoing work, ensuring that our faith, though often flickering, never extinguishes. God ultimately guards our faith. This message is one of hope: life in Christ is not defined by circumstances but by abiding in God's faithfulness, leading to a vibrant, enduring faith that fuels a life of worship, growth, and reliance on His unchanging character!

Christ Our Wisdom

The sermon, drawn from Colossians 2:8–10, delivers an urgent warning against the subtle dangers of human philosophy and empty deceit that seek to captivate believers by appealing to innate human desires for meaning and wisdom. Rooted in the biblical narrative from Genesis, it highlights humanity's inherent longing for the divine—evident in Ecclesiastes, Romans, and the heart's yearning for eternity—yet underscores that apart from Christ, all such pursuits are ultimately empty and deceptive. The passage exposes the peril of philosophies grounded in human tradition and elemental spiritual forces, which, though they may appear reasonable or even godly, are fundamentally disconnected from Christ and thus incapable of true transformation. In stark contrast, the sermon exalts Christ as the fullness of deity dwelling bodily, the ultimate wisdom, truth, and fulfillment of every human longing, declaring that in Him alone believers are complete, rooted, and filled. The call is clear: to reject all counterfeit philosophies and to live fully in the sufficiency of Christ, Who is all and in all, the only foundation for a life of faith, hope, and enduring truth.

Joy for Christ's Coming

Theme: Believers find great joy in Jesus's first coming (and all He accomplished in His life, death, resurrection, and ascension) and look forward to His return to reign as the "Monarch over the nations." Psalm 98 reveals the joy of Christ's first coming as the fulfillment of all Old Testament hope, portraying His kingship, salvation, and universal reign. The passage calls God's people to sing a new song of praise, not for mere historical events, but for the definitive victory Christ achieved through His life, death, resurrection, and ascension—delivering salvation by His righteous hand and holy arm. This joy extends beyond Israel to all nations and even all of creation, which will ultimately rejoice as the Lord returns to judge the earth with righteousness and faithfulness. The sermon emphasizes that Christ's first coming guarantees His second, and believers are called to live in continual worship, recognizing Him as the source of joy, grace, and eternal hope, while inviting all to receive Him as Savior and King.

Theme: Believers see the humility of God in Christ, descending to be with His people, and being the way that unites us with God filled with great promises and assurances. The sermon unfolds a profound theological narrative connecting Genesis 28's vision of Jacob's ladder with John 1's revelation of Jesus as the true bridge between heaven and earth, emphasizing that Christ fulfills the Old Testament's promises as the incarnate God who descends in humility to unite us to God. Central to this message is the revelation that Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of God's covenant faithfulness—seen in His descent to dwell with humanity, His role as the only mediator between God and man, and His embodiment of Bethel, the house of God, where heaven and earth meet. Through the lens of Jacob's dream and Nathanael's encounter, the preacher underscores that Christ is not merely a symbol but the living reality of divine presence, offering eternal life, intimate fellowship, unbroken companionship, and the assurance of never being forsaken.

Theme: Believers have the comfort and joy of knowing that Christ permanently dwells with us. The sermon centers on the profound truth that Christ fulfills the Old Testament's picture of God dwelling with His people, culminating in the incarnation where the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us. Drawing from John 1:14 and the symbolism of the tabernacle, it emphasizes that Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of every element—altar, cleansing basin, lampstand, table of showbread, incense, ark, and veil—revealing that His presence is not temporary or mediated through ritual, but eternal and personal. Believers now enjoy the fullness of God's presence through Christ, who is the perfect high priest, sacrifice, cleanser, light, bread, and intercessor, making access to God not only possible but secure. This reality brings comfort, courage, contentment, and boldness, assuring believers that God is with them in every trial and triumph, and that His presence is sufficient for all of life.

Seven Blessed Statements of Revelation

These seven blessed statements from Revelation give us strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. The major theme of Rev. 1:3 and Rev. 22:7 is that those who keep the words of this prophecy will be blessed. Our keeping the Word will be a blessing to our friends and loved ones who do not yet know the Lamb. We will be blessed ourselves with courage and safety. These blessings can only be won through pastors and congregations working together. Revelation 14:13 states that those who die in the Lord from now on will be blessed! Revelation 16:15 pronounces a blessing on those who are watchful in holiness. Revelation 19:9 states that those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb are blessed. When we realize how truly sinful we are, we will treasure this blessing even more. Revelation 20:6 says those who share in the first resurrection will be blessed and holy. Over such, the second death has no power! Revelation 22:14 proclaims blessing on those who have washed their robes so they may have the right to the tree of life. Let us seek by God's grace to be people who hear and keep His Word!

Manifold Wisdom of God

Theme: Believers should marvel in the splendor of the gospel and not lose heart in living and proclaiming it. In v. 8, we see Paul's attitude towards the grace given him. In application, we need to let grace humble us. In vv. 8-9, we see Paul's passion for the proclamation of grace. Here we see the importance of being intentional to bring the light of the gospel to someone. Finally in vv. 10-13, we see the wisdom of God's grace. In application, we should take the time to deeply trace, meditate, and praise God's manifold wisdom of grace! As Paul is going to conclude, this is all accomplished in Christ. Even though Paul is in prison now, he didn't want the Ephesian believers to be discouraged by his present circumstances. Even in our most difficult circumstances, may we look at the manifold wisdom of God, set our affection on God and His incredible grace, love Him, and love others by proclaiming the matchless gospel of Jesus Christ!

Theme: Regardless of circumstances, all of God's people have been entrusted with the incredible gift of the gospel to be good stewards of it. We see that stewardship is required in all circumstances (vv. 1-2), given by God Himself (vv. 3-5), and for the benefit of others (vv. 6-7). Five ways to be good stewards of the Gospel include: recognize that the mystery of Christ is about Jesus Himself; don't allow hard situations to affect your stewardship; beware of the fear of man; be faithful to your Lord; love, share, and use it for God's glory. In conclusion, Paul was entrusted with the mystery of Christ. His love for Christ and the good news made him explode with joy in this stewardship. Do we value this great stewardship? May we seek to be like Paul and value and treasure this great stewardship of the gospel, regardless of our circumstances and share it and live it out.

In application, we need to set our affection on our everlasting residence. In v. 19b, we see that we are members of the Household of God. In application, we need to love and welcome our brothers and sisters in Christ. Paul teaches in vv. 20-22 that we are members of the Temple of God. This should encourage us to remember that the Lord is with us! What a privilege it is to be part of the God's family! This is an incredible membership where we are citizens of the kingdom, family members, and the dwelling place of God. The Lord is with us!

Theme: Believers should reflect on the peace they have in Christ In v. 14, we see that Christ Himself is our peace. Peace isn't just something that Christ gives. Peace is having Christ Himself! We now have fellowship with God. How rich that is. We need to look to Christ as our peace with God and others. In application, we need to practice the peace we have with Christ. In vv. 14-18, we see the effects of Christ being our peace. The first effect is reconciliation in relationships (v. 14b). We are one people of God. The second effect is that divisions are eradicated (v. 14c). In application, we need to seek to unite in Christ rather than divide. The third effect is that the law has run its course and is gone (vv. 15-16). Christ abolished the law of commands and made the final sacrifice - thus the temple was needed no more. It has been now fulfilled in Christ. The fourth effect is that Christ preached peace (vv. 17-18). In application, we need to seek to bring peace to those far from God. In v. 18, we see we have access to the Father, and we need to go to Him! In conclusion, the world looks at many ways to achieve peace. Slogans, sin, war… but true and lasting peace is first peace with God that comes through Christ, and peace with our brothers and sisters who have peace with God through Christ. In Christ we are one. And there is peace.

The Heart of the Gospel

Theme: There is an alien righteousness of God, predicted but veiled in the Old Testament but now fully revealed, that is given as a gift only to those who will believe in Jesus. At the cross, God's character is displayed as both just and merciful. Manifestation: There is a foreign (alien) righteousness, apart from the Law which we do not possess by nature, that God gives to His people, that is now fully revealed, but was hidden in the Old Testament. (v. 21) Means: This righteousness apart from the Law comes to us by faith in the perfect life, perfect death, and resurrection of Jesus, and requires the gift of Grace (vv. 22-25) Majesty: This righteousness given by God to the sinner as well as His wrath against sin, vindicated His character, showing His lavish mercy, but not at the expense of His perfect justice (v. 26) This text is the heart of the gospel because it lays out clearly like no other, the plan for redemption. Christianity is different from any other religion in the world because God declares and makes the believer righteous and acceptable to Him; in every other religion, man seeks to make himself righteous. If you are a believer in Jesus, you should thank God at all times for this amazing gift of grace! We should meditate on this gospel and be bold to share with others. Unbelievers should recognize the deadly peril of being under the wrath of a holy God. Today is the day of salvation!

From Far to Near

Theme: Believers should reflect on how far they've come in their new relationship with Christ. In vv. 11-12, we see that we began far from Christ. In application, we need to remember not to be haughty and to remember the dreadful state in which we all found ourselves. We were without Christ, citizenship, promise hope, and God. Verse 13 teaches us that we end near to Christ! In application, we need to remember now Christ has changed our relationship. As we see that we were in such a plight, let us remember that we have nothing to be prideful for, but our boast is in Christ. Let us remember and give thanks to God for His grace in our lives and for His love and mercy. Let us pray for and tell those who have never heard of His grace!

Theme: God redeemed His people for the purpose that they would be transformed and live out their changed lives. God created us for good works, and in application, we should value and seek to do good works. They are not optional. Good works are possible by God's grace. Scripture teaches that just as God predestined our justification, He also predestined our sanctification. Good works are not for the elite few but for all believers. This being the case, we must be zealous for them. Good works include Godly inward attitudes, doing good (especially to our church family), helping those who cannot repay you (even when it's inconvenient), and walking in holiness. God created us to live differently, and we need to ask God to give us a desire to do what He were created us to do. In addition to prayer, how do we do become zealous for good works? Our sanctification (good works) must come from Scripture not society. We must abide in Christ. We need to recognize that Christian growth is synergistic, and salvation is monergistic. We must aim at the heart. As our hearts are changed (inward), our hearts turn more to God in a right way in worship (upward) and more care for our neighbor in church and outside grows (outward). We can be zealous for good works!

Theme: God redeemed His people for the purpose that they would be transformed and live out their changed lives. In this passage, we see that God alone created His people anew! In application, we need to recognize that we are God's special creation. Next, we see that God created us in Christ Jesus. This brings about our union with Christ. Our union with Christ means that God chose, justified, sanctifies, and glorifies us. He created us for good works. Good works should always be on our mind and are possible only by God's grace. We are to do good to all, but first to our brothers and sisters in Christ. In application, we need to live out our faith. Because we are God's new creation, we are called to be like Christ!

Theme: Believers must maintain an attitude of humility of self and worship to God for His rich grace. In v. 8a, we see that believers are saved by grace, and in application, we should worship God because His grace alone has saved us! In vv. 8b-9, we see that believers are saved through faith. Our faith doesn't save us. Christ saves us. In application, we need to consider who or what we are trusting in for salvation and beware of a boasting heart. Our only boast should be in the cross! God will receive praise from age to age for His amazing grace that He lavished upon us. God has turned sinners into saints so that His amazing grace will be on display for all eternity!

Theme: In His kindness, God united believers to Christ's resurrection, ascension, and exaltation so that His glory may be displayed now and for all eternity. Why has God so richly blessed us? What is His ultimate purpose in doing so? In v. 7, we see that God's purpose was to demonstrate the immeasurable riches of His grace. In application, we should show gratitude to God for His grace and demonstrate God's grace to others through our lives. Ultimately, how will God demonstrate His grace? First, we see God's enduring demonstration (in the age to come). Second, God's manner of demonstration is in kindness toward us. Third, God's scope of demonstration is to those in Christ Jesus. In this verse, what we have seen is that God's purpose in granting us saving grace is that riches of His grace might be on display for all to see for all the ages to come. We will never tire of thinking of His grace or exhaust the knowledge of His grace. We will never cease praising Him as the God of all grace. His rich grace will be on display for ever and ever, and we will be the trophies of His grace!

Alive Together with Christ

Theme: Believers should rest in God's grace by remembering their remarkable union with Christ. As we look at our union with Christ, we will focus on three major points in Jesus' life - His resurrection, ascension, and session. In v. 4a, we see the character of God. He is rich in mercy, and He is great in love. This is His character. God is merciful because He is love. In application, we need to find our hope in God and who He is. In vv. 5-6 we see the work of God. Parallel to the historical aspects of What Christ has done is what He has done for us because we are in Him. He made us alive together (His resurrection), He raised us up (He ascended into heaven) , and He seated us (His Heavenly session). In application, we are to live like we are alive! We can do this by loving like God loved us, recognizing our authority, recognizing that we are pilgrims, seeking things that are above, and recognizing we can now live as Christ lived by His grace. In conclusion, we have been made alive in Christ! Let us be grateful and glorify God because of the great mercy with which He loved us!

Theme: Believers do well to consider their past condition of being spiritually dead and present condition of being spiritually alive solely due to God's mercy. The human condition is spiritually dead and corrupt in conduct. Because of this, we are under the wrath of God. It is a good thing to remember that there is indeed coming a day of God's wrath and to consider that we can store up that wrath against us by refusing to repent. God's wrath is coming on account of earthly sins, and Jesus alone delivers us from the wrath of God. No one, except those in Christ will escape God's wrath. In v. 4, we read of God's intervention. In application, we need to thank God for saving us from His wrath! As believers it does us well to remember not only what we were but what we are now. In the past that we were dead in our sins, rebels, children of wrath, and spiritually dead. But God in his great mercy, made us alive! Because of His great love, He did not leave us there. For his own glory He rescued us!

Theme: Believers do well to consider their past condition of being spiritually dead. In v. 1, we see the human condition's original state: We were dead, unable to seek after God. In application, we should be grateful for God's rich mercy. In v. 2, we see another aspect of the human condition: We are corrupt in our conduct. In application, now as children of God, we need to conduct ourselves in ways that please God. In v. 3, we see that the human condition's final result is wrath. Finally, in remembering we were once spiritually dead, and now we are alive and children of God, we should be imitators of God. Paul wants us to remember where we came from. It is not that we were sad people and now adding God to our lives we can be a little happier. We were dead, children of wrath, destined for God's judgment. But because of God, Who is rich in mercy, now we are His children. It does us well to remember where we came from and give thanks and glory to God!

Theme: Scripture through the illumination of the Spirit is all believers need to understand our faith and salvation through the works of Jesus by grace alone for the glory of God. This passage is a microcosm of a believer coming to salvation, seen in the interaction of Jesus with these disciples on the road to Emmaus. Spiritually blinded, though they had much head knowledge, it was only through the Scriptures being illuminated for them, when these men have their eyes opened in true faith to see Jesus for Who He really is, their Savior and Redeemer! Jesus shows how the Spirit works by illuminating His Word and showing that all of Scripture points to Christ.

Revelation and Grace

Theme: God's people should recognize the greatness of God in His revelations and humbly respond in prayer seeking grace. In vv. 1-6, we see the need to honor God because of how He reveals Himself in the general revelation of Creation. In vv. 7-11, the Psalmist explains that we can know God because of His written revelation. How does David respond to seeing the glory of God above and the glory of the Lord in His Word? What should our proper response to this revelation be as well? In vv. 12-14, we see that we should seek God's grace by living in light of His revelation. There will be a desire in the believer's life to love God and to walk in His ways. In v. 12, the Psalmist recognizes he has hidden faults, and he seeks forgiveness from sins of which he is unaware. We also need to be on guard to "kill" our willful sins, or they will control us. David ends this Psalm in v. 14 with a prayer of sacrifice and dedication. Christian, is this your prayer, that the words of your mouth and meditation of your heart would be acceptable in the Lord's sight?

The Steadfast Love of the Lord

Theme: Believers should slow down and remind themselves continually of God's great, faithful, covenantal love in every aspect of their lives. In vv. 1-3, the Psalmist exhorts God's people to give thanks to Him for being the one true God and in vv. 4-9 for being the great Creator. In vv. 10-22, God's people are to give thanks to Him for being the great Deliverer and Conqueror. Next in vv. 23-25, the Psalmist exhorts them to give thanks to God for being the great Provider for all His people and finally in v. 26, because He is the God of Heaven. From birth to death, we are called to do and remember the same thing: to give thanks to the God of Heaven, because His steadfast love endures forever. In application, let us think through our own lives, and write our own Psalms of praise recounting God's faithfulness to us, how His steadfast love has endured forever!

The Lord Our Strength and Portion

Theme: Followers of Christ must resist being envious of the wicked and turn their eyes and affections toward Christ. In v. 1 we see that we need to resolve that God is good to His people. In vv. 2-15, we see the danger of envying the wicked. In vv. 16-20, we see the need to reject this illusion and seek God's presence. Finally in vv. 21-28, we see that we need to embrace the enjoyment of God. Wisdom tells us that we must be informed. We must put on our spiritual glasses and not believe the illusion that it out there - that the wicked, those who follow their own wills, wants, desires, and devices are prospering. They are not. It's an illusion. True life is found in Jesus Christ!

Worship and Warning

Theme: We are called to worship our great God with all our hearts, making sure we do not fall away! In vv. 1-2, we see the call to worship and give thanks. In application, we need to worship God from our hearts. We are to give thanks in v. 3 for the greatness of God and in vv. 4-5 because He is the Creator. In vv. 6-7, we see the privilege of worship. Worship is a privilege because of the close relationship we have with the Lord. He has adopted us and is our Father. We are His treasured possession. But with privilege comes responsibly. A warning is given: as we walk with the Lord, we need to keep our hearts tender to Him. We need to be on guard from falling away from the belief that God is our Father, and we are the sheep of His pasture. Sometimes, when we find ourselves in difficult circumstances, instead of trusting God's faithfulness, we doubt Him, as Israel did when they were thirsty in the wilderness and grumbled against the Lord. In vv. 7b-11, the Psalmist gives a warning: "Do not harden your hearts to the Lord." In application, we need to obey God from our hearts. The urgency and application is "today!" In conclusion, who or what we worship sets forth how we live. Let us worship God with our whole hearts. Let us continually set Him before our faces. Let us humbly and reverently worship Him in our hearts. And let us beware of not obeying His word - of not walking in faith with our Lord. Lest we not truly enter His rest.

Walking in Christ

Theme: Born again Christians must walk in Christ according to their newness. When we confess Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are commanded to walk in Him. Our walk comes out of our faith, who we are in Christ precedes our changed life. To walk means following a higher authority. We used to identify as sons of disobedience, but now we are sons of God. Walking has the idea of actively shaping our lives, in an intentional way, in obedience to Him, emulating the teachings received. This growth comes from knowing Christ more deeply, and this is exactly what Paul is praying for the Colossians, that they would have a deeper knowledge of Christ, because as their knowledge grows and they are more deeply rooted in Christ, they can lead a life pleasing to Christ, bearing fruit like a plant with strong roots would do. As believers, we are planted firmly in Christ getting all our needs met in Him to grow strong and produce fruit. We should never stop growing in Christ our whole lives but continue to grow deeper roots and be built up in Him. Reading God's Word, Bible study, hymns, and discipleship are some ways of growing deeper in our knowledge of Him. In application, we need to grow deeper roots and be built up on Christ. Walking in Christ is also characterized by thanksgiving because of all God has done for us. Thankfulness is God's will for us, and helps to prevent bitterness in our lives, prevents boasting or turning away from God, and increases humility and service towards others. In conclusion, how is your walk in Christ? Are you continuing living a life in Christ, imitating Him? We need to ask ourselves these things because we are commanded to do so.

Theme: Followers of Christ should be thankful, praying effectively for their fellow believers to deeply know their Lord. In v. 22a, Paul prays that the eyes of the Ephesian believers would be opened to God's sovereign sphere, as he references Psalm 8:6. All things have been put under Christ's feet, in subjection to Him, and in v. 22b-23, Paul includes the truth of God's authority for the church. The church is His body, and He is the head. Here we see how special the church is to Christ. He is all powerful, and He doesn't use the power against us but rather for us!
As we meditate on these rich truths, let us recognize that the God of Heaven holds all power, rule, and authority. And as God's chosen child, Christ Who loves you uses His mighty power for you. So let your faith be strengthened!

Theme: Followers of Christ should be thankful, praying effectively for their fellow believers to deeply know their Lord. We see from Paul's prayer that he desires that we know and live in the power of the resurrection. But he also wants us to understand the nature of the power of Christ - that He is reigning supreme. Christ is seated on His throne with the glory of the Father. Paul quotes/alludes to Psalm 110:1. Christ is the King and supreme ruler of all. There, at God's right hand not only does He reign, but we find grace and strength in our time of need! In application, we need to recognize God's heavenly jurisdiction (vv. 20b-21). Christ's right hand is powerful, defeats the enemy, calms fears, and gives strength. It is the great holding on of the Savior that keeps us safe! When Christ was seated at the ascension, the ascension was actually the transition from His earthly rule to the universal rule, and so it is in the ascension of Christ, we find hope and peace, according to Romans 8:34. Does your knowledge of God lead you to greater trust in Him? Does it lead you to greater peace and assurance? It should. Ask the Lord to open the eyes of your heart to accomplish this, not only for you but for your church family as well!

Followers of Christ should be thankful, praying effectively for their fellow believers to deeply know their Lord. In vv. 18-23, Paul prays that the eyes of the hearts of the Ephesian believers would be enlightened so that they would know their great hope, rich inheritance, and God's incomparably great power. This "power" that he is speaking of is God's power for us to be transformed - to see with new eyes, to give us new abilities and desires, to change our hearts, to give us the victory over sin and the devil, to transport us from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of His dear Son, and to give us victory over the grave. In application, we need to recognize God's resurrection power. First, God gives us power by giving us new life - resurrecting us. Second God gives us power to live out the life to which He has called us. He desires that we know and live in the power of the resurrection!

Theme: Followers of Christ should be thankful, praying effectively for their fellow believers to deeply know their Lord. In v. 18, we see our hope comes from the call which God has given us. God has called us to His kingdom, and this call is irresistible, and yet it is not against our will; we come gladly. In application, we need to be grateful for His effectual call! The call is special because Jesus is greater; it motivates us to press on in the Christian race, sustains us in suffering, tells us how to live, is unifying, and mission filled and transforming. In v. 18b, Paul also wants believers to know their glorious inheritance. I Peter 2:9 says we are a people for His own possession. In application, we need to think on God's covenantal love for us. We are treasured by God! In light of all that the Lord has done for us in electing, redeeming, and sealing us, we are called to live as new people, having the eyes of our hearts enlightened. As you think on these things, are you grateful for God's effectual call, allowing it to affect your life? Secondly, do you need to really just pause and consider God's loyal, steadfast love for you?

Theme: Followers of Christ should be thankful, praying effectively for their fellow believers to deeply know their Lord. In vv. 16-17, we see the example of Spirit-filled prayer for the Ephesians to deeply know God through the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. In vv. 18-23, we see this is possible because the eyes of their hearts have been enlightened. God desires that our thoughts and our emotions are governed by the knowledge of Him! This is something to pray for, because only the Lord can open our eyes to spiritual realities. In all of this, Paul prays that their eyes would be enlightened in three specific areas: hope, inheritance (privilege) and power. In v. 18 we see the importance of knowing the great hope we have. Romans 5 shares the unshakable hope that believers are given. We have this hope because we are justified by God (not by our works but by faith), we have peace with God, our standing before Him is all of grace, we know we will be glorified because of the resurrection, and we have unshakeable hope not only because of future glory but because we know that even the present sufferings are changing us to become more like Christ. What trial are you going through that God is using to conform you to the image of Christ? We grow in our trials as we cling to the grace of God for our hope. In light of all that the Lord has done for us in electing, redeeming, sealing us, we are called to live as new people, having the eyes of our hearts enlightened. Will you commit to praying for your brothers and sisters this way? Will you ask God to help you see your present life with new spiritual eyes - for His glory!

Prayer to Know God

Theme: Followers of Christ should be thankful, praying effectively for their fellow believers to deeply know their Lord. In vv. 15-16a, we see the purpose of thankful prayer. Paul gives thanks for their genuine faith in Christ, seen in their love for all the saints. In vv. 16b-23, we see the example of Spirit-filled prayer. Paul's deepest prayer isn't that the Ephesians will have better circumstances, but that they would KNOW, in an experiential way, God in a greater and deeper way. In application, we need to realize our greatest need is to deeply know God. How do we know God? We need to be humble, pray for the Spirit's work, and seek Christ. In humility, we need to submit ourselves, not to our own wisdom, but the Wisdom of God. We can pray for wisdom as James says, and we need to submit to Scripture. As John teaches, God sanctifies us through the truth of His Word. We need to pray for the Spirit's work in our lives and for wisdom in taking the revelation we have and applying it by our obedience. As we seek Christ by the Spirit, through the word humbly praying for wisdom, the Lord will indeed conform us to His image. In conclusion, let us be people who not only practice this ourselves, but also let this be the content of our prayers for others. Not just praying for the problems of life in others, but praying for the fruit of Christlikeness in others.

Theme: Followers of Christ should be thankful, praying effectively for their fellow believers. In vv. 15-16a, we see the purpose of thankful prayer, and in application, we need to thank God for the believers' union with Christ and for the genuine faith of others! As believers, we are positionally holy before the Lord, and we are growing into who we already are positionally. As 1 John teaches, genuine faith results in love for the brothers. Paul thanks God for this evidence seen in the life of the Ephesian Christians, and we see in his example that we need to commit as he did to pray for fellow believers spiritually. In conclusion, Paul took a personal interest in the people at Ephesus. He prayed for them. He rejoiced and thanked God for their rich salvation. Will you pray for your fellow believers? Will you start out by thanking God for them?

Theme: God's people should praise Him for He claims them as His own. This brings about great assurance for which we praise Him. In v. 13, we see that we should praise the Holy Spirit for making us His own. The phrase "in Christ" speaks of the beautiful union the believer has with Christ. We are claimed by God. We are marked and sealed by the promised Holy Spirit. How do we get marked or sealed by the Spirit? It is simple, we hear the Word and believe. Every person is confronted with truth and must decide what he will do with it. In application, we need to come to terms with gospel exclusivity. In v. 14, we see that we should praise the Holy Spirit for being our deposit. He gives us the assurance that we will be fully and completely delivered and redeemed. He is the guarantee of our inheritance! We need to allow this assurance to be our joy! In conclusion, if you know Christ and have been redeemed by Him, believe what He says. Know the work of the Spirit is to put His mark upon you and to promise you that what He has determined for you will come to pass. He guarantees it. Let this be your joy!

A Great Inheritance

Theme: God's children should praise Him because of the guaranteed inheritance He promises them. In verse 11a, we see that those in Christ have an inheritance. Because we are in Christ, we are fundamentally changed, and life and death are put in a new perspective. Our inheritance is God Himself! In application, we need to focus on eternal things. In vv. 11b-12, we see that those God has predestined have an inheritance. This was His plan from the beginning. We should find comfort in God's sovereign care and also understand our responsibility to believe, and to grow in our faith. In conclusion, the Ephesians lived in a wicked place. They were strangers, worshipping the one true God, not a god made by hands like everyone else. They found comfort in the sovereign plan of their Shepherd-King. They also found comfort in the inheritance they had, the Father Who adopted them, the Son who redeemed them, and the Spirit who sealed them. All for His glory!

Theme: We who are now God's children are to praise (bless) Him because He redeemed us and poured on us the riches of His grace! We see in v. 7-10, God redeemed His people through the blood of Christ, according to the riches of His grace. What kind of grace? It is not merely that it is grace, but it is rich grace! In application, we need to recognize this, be thankful, and reciprocate God's grace to others. In vv. 8-9, we see that God made known His great mystery. Ephesians 3:6 speaks about this as well. This mystery is that Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Colossians 1:27 (ESV) says, "To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory." Because of God's revelation, we have great wisdom on how to live, how to deal with life, and how to live before God. In application, we need to take advantage of God's gracious revelation, but how? First, the revelation of this mystery should strengthen us. Romans 16:25 (ESV) says,"Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ." We also need to meditate on God's remarkable plan, because we are inherently selfish people, thinking life is all about us, when in reality, it is all about God. In conclusion, we see God's great plan unfolding for His glory, to bring about all things to the way they should be, all things for His glory!

Resurrection: A Hopeful Future

Theme: The Resurrection of Jesus ensures a hopeful future to those who repent and believe the gospel. In this passage, we see that the resurrection of Jesus ensures three things: complete transformation (vv. 50-53), a death blow to death (vv. 54-57), and a resolute present and hopeful future (v. 58). In light of these truths, we must seek to be firm and steadfast, immovable, and abound in our work for the Lord! In conclusion, we have the hope of transformation that results in not just a new heart and soul, but a new body as well. We have the true hope that death will be no more, and the sure hope that our work for Christ will last. Let us be like the disciples, who though they doubted and were far from perfect, when they saw the resurrected Christ, they gave all for Him, even their lives.

A Biblical View of Work

Working hard is a moral and a God issue. God has ordained for man to work; it is not something to get through so we can just relax. God Himself works, and His work can be seen in Creation, His sustaining of Creation, His judgements, and in His work of redemption. Jesus accomplished His Father's work, and He says in John 5:17, "My Father is working until now, and I am working." Jesus was a carpenter for around twenty years of His earthly life, and we should be like Jesus, working hard to take care of our family. Jesus also called men who were hard-workers to be His apostles, including fishermen, a carpenter, and a tentmaker. Work isn't in a separate compartment from the Christian life. 1 Cor. 10:31 tells us to glorify God in all we do. Work is a serious matter, and Paul is commanding the Thessalonians to deal with this issue of idleness that was plaguing some in the church. Paul sets the example by his own working as a tentmaker and shows righteous anger over the laziness of these who were busybodies. Paul commands that if a man will not work, he should not eat. Work is a lifelong calling from God for the Christian. While we may retire from our jobs, we never stop working for the Lord! We see from the God's ordaining work for mankind and from the godly examples of Jesus and Paul that God holds hard work in high esteem. The godly men in our church are hard-workers. Hard work is not an option for a faithful Christ follower. God blesses others through our work. Let us seek to glorify Him in and through it!

Redemption in Christ

Theme: We who are now God's children are to praise (bless) Him because He redeemed us. In v. 7, we see that God redeemed His people through the blood of Christ. In application, we need to live like the free people we are! We are no longer slaves to our sin. We are completely free of our sin, yet we are not our own; we now belong to Him. In vv. 7-10, we see that God redeemed His people according to the riches of His grace. Because of this, we need to live in reverence and in humble worship before Him. In conclusion, we are called to bless God because of His great redemption. He redeemed us from the curse of sin, rescuing us from ourselves, rescuing us from His own wrath, and setting us free to walk humbly with God and to worship him. If you know Him today, bow before Him and worship. If you do not know His freedom, freedom from your sin, freedom from the kingdom of darkness, look to Christ. Repent of your sin. Believe on Christ, and He will save you.

Believers should love God as Father because of the gracious adoption of His children and all the privileges that are ours. In v. 4, we see that God's motivation in predestination was love. In application, we need to embrace the Father's love for us. In v. 5, God's purpose of predestination, adoption, is revealed. In application, we need to utilize the privileges of our adoption. The London Baptist Confession of 1689 gives a wonderful list of these privileges. In v. 6, we see the impetus of God's election which is praise. We need to practice daily praise to God for His grace. According to God's glorious grace, He has chosen us to be predestined, not to be merely rescued, but to be sons and daughters who are privileged, loved, and blessed. We are called to bless God the Father because He has blessed us so very much!

Theme: The Lord is worthy to be praised because He chose His people for redemption. The basis of God's choosing is found in v. 4 "in love" and v. 11 "according to His own purpose."
The truth of God's election is also found in many other places in Scripture; there is no reason for man to boast. As a result, we need to be humbled by God's gracious election. In v. 4b, we see the purpose of God's choosing, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In application, we should
reflect God's character (attributes). This is sanctification. We are predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son. In conclusion, if you have embraced God's salvation, are you humbled by it? Are you thankful for God's election? Do you give glory to God for it? In response to it, are you living as a sacrifice to God? Are you pursuing holiness, striving to be like Christ, and depending on Him for the strength to do so? This is why you were called!

Theme: Believers should praise the triune God for His incredible work of grace! In v. 3, Paul gives thanks to God for His goodness, Who He is, and for richly blessing us. In vv. 4-15, he describes four further reasons for praise. We should praise God the Father for choosing us and granting us an inheritance, the Son for redeeming us, and the Spirit for sealing us. In application, how is our praise? Paul desires that we as believers take our gaze off our own lives, despite the many troubles we have, and look to the triune God, see the rich blessing of His deep grace He has given us and give Him the praise He deserves!

Theme: God sovereignly calls people to His service, transforms them, and blesses them with special favor. In v. 1a, we read of how God calls believers to serve Him. In application, we need to remember our calling. In v. 1b, God calls believers to be peculiar, and we need to realize the blessing of who we are in Christ. In v. 2 we see that God grants believers special favor; we should embrace the joyful assurance of God's love. Paul introduces this letter as divinely given by God. God has called Paul, as He has called His people to serve Him. This is no accident or coincidence. It is God's will. And God desires that His people live in the assurance of His favor - of His grace and peace today.

Theme: In response to God's sovereign grace and mercy, believers should lives that reflect godliness in our actions and attitudes and seek to maintain unity in the church. Ephesians chapter 1 admonishes us to let rich doctrine result in monumental praise (vv. 6, 12, 14). In chapter 2, Paul encourages us as believers to remember where we came from (vv. 11-13). In chapter 3, he models how to pray for your fellow heirs for spiritual strength (vv. 14-16), and in chapter 4, he urges believers to walk in unity and godliness (vv.1-3). In chapter 5, he tells Christians to model God in their conduct and relationships (v. 1), and in chapter 6, to find their strength in the Lord (v. 10). The letter to the Ephesians is an extremely rich doctrinal yet practical book. The practicality flows from the doctrine. In it we see the glory of salvation, the unity believers are to strive for, and the way God desires we live - holy and blameless.

Worship and Joy

Theme: Those who trust the resurrected Savior should live lives filled with worship and joy to Christ alone. In vv. 50-51, Jesus blesses the disciples and then ascends into Heaven. In application, we should be bold and selfless in serving Christ, just as His first disciples were. In vv. 52-53, the disciples respond in worship of Jesus and return to Jerusalem. They continually bless God in the temple. In application, we need to be careful who/what we worship. There are many temptations to seek to find our ultimate joy outside of God. When we don't worship Jesus with our lives, it is because of this: we don't fully grasp who He truly is. Our view of Jesus is far too small. Let us truly worship Him as the disciples did and live out our lives in love and service to Him.

Theme: Because of the resurrection, it is our mission to confidently and completely share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to all people. In vv. 47-48, we see the disciples' mission, to preach repentance for the forgiveness of sins in His name to all nations. In application, we need to give the fullness of the gospel in its entirety and also recognize the extravagance of God's grace in providing salvation for all nations. In vv. 44-46, Jesus gives the basis of the mission. In application, we need to keep Christ as the main purpose and be humbled by God's sovereign grace, as we realize that salvation is the work and gift of God. In v. 49, we see the power of the mission. Jesus doesn't send the disciples out in their own strength but in the power of the Holy Spirit. We also need to live in the power of the Spirit. In conclusion, we see that the disciples were given a mission to share what they had not only experienced but also had seen in the Scriptures. They had experienced the power of the resurrection of Christ. And in experiencing that, they would be sent to proclaim this message around the world by the power of the Holy Spirit. May God give us grace to become imitators of the disciples, to share the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus Gives Assurance

Theme: The resurrection of Jesus was a verifiable, bodily resurrection and should instill assurance in Christians' lives. In vv. 36-37, Jesus appears to the disciples. He greets them with "Peace to you." Though they had fear at this time, Jesus wanted them to be assured and to have peace. In application, we need to find peace through Christ. In vv. 38-43, Jesus gives assurance to the disciples by allowing them to touch His hands and feet, and He eats food in their presence to assure them that He has truly risen from the dead. In application, we need to dispel doubts and fear with truth and also to find assurance in Christ's resurrection. In conclusion, Jesus's resurrection gave His disciples the assurance that the mission they were called to do was indeed worth it. We have the same assurance to follow Christ with our lives. Jesus is indeed alive. To follow Christ means to give up ourselves for Christ. To live as a pilgrim in this world is worth it!

The Devil's Favorite Verse

Many have taken the words "Judge not," from Matthew 7:1 out of context. The world has used it in an attempt to silence Christians who would speak the truth. From the surrounding context in Matthew, it is clearly seen that Jesus is not teaching that we shouldn't judge, since in later verses, He gives three calls to judge. The passage also gives instruction on what Jesus is teaching about making judgments. We should judge, but we should not judge wrongly. In vv. 2-5, Jesus shows that when we make judgments, we should not do that hypocritically and also exhorts that we need to remember that we also will be judged. We will want to receive mercy and kindness, so we should give that to others as well. Ephesians 4:15 gives further clarity, as Paul urges believers to speak the truth in love. In conclusion, we should not back away from speaking the truth. God has give us His Word to use in our judgments. We need to ask God to search and know our hearts so we can first repent, and then our hearts can be filled with love and compassion for the people we are dealing with in order to be helpful, constructive, and edifying. This will help us to judge with righteous judgement.

Navigating the Storms

When bad things happen, how are we to respond? The Apostle Paul suffered much, and in this passage, we find three props he leaned on to help him flourish, even in difficult times. First, Paul had an abiding faith. He knew there was a God in Heaven who knows, cares, and is able. In times of trouble, we also need to focus on the truth we know about God. We may not understand why the trial is happening, but we can trust His character. Secondly, Paul knew that God had a purpose in trials. God develops the inner man through suffering, and we grow most when things are difficult. We can ask the Lord, "How are You growing me through this experience?" Finally, Paul knew that there was a future reward coming. He lived in light of eternity. The light (in comparison) affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory!

Developing a Balance of Grace and Truth

As we look at what it meant for Jesus to be full of grace and truth, we know that as Christians, God's goal for us is to be conformed to the image of His Son. The fact that Jesus was full of grace and truth revealed His divine nature as well as His character. Jesus was so full of grace that He was known as the "Friend of Sinners," yet His graciousness did not lead Him to avoid truth. He spoke often of Hell. He didn't tell people what they wanted to hear but what they needed to hear. As humans, most of us are out of balance, either speaking truth while tending to neglect grace or being gracious in a way that ignores the truth of God's Word. We need to seek to speak the truth in love, as Jesus did. We cannot change ourselves to have the proper balance of grace and truth, but need to ask God for His help to cooperate with His Spirit, day by day, and hour by hour.

The Supremacy of Christ

In vv. 15-17, we see that Christ is the Lord of Creation. He is first in rank and by Him all Creation is held together. All things were created through Him, and for Him. In v. 18, we see that Christ is the Lord of the New Creation. Paul highlights the headship of Christ in the church. He is the firstborn from the dead and the origin of the church. In application, we can't forget the deity of Christ! In seeing Him as the suffering Servant, don't forget that He is God. In vv. 19-20, we see that Christ is the Lord of Reconciliation. Paul is not teaching universalism, but that truly all accounts are settled, and all people will be brought into submission to God, either through redemption in Christ, or by facing eternal punishment. In application, we see the importance of seeking to bring reconciliation to those we care about. Let us submit to Christ in love and thankfulness and share with others who Christ truly is!

Knowledge of Christ Fully Equips the Believers

Theme: Full knowledge of Christ fully equips believers with full assurance and knowledge and strong firmness in their faith. In v. 1-2, Paul tells of how he struggles on behalf of the church because he wanted to encourage them and desired for them to be knit together in love. In application, we have to be intentional about practicing Biblical love. In vv. 2-3, we see Paul's desire for the Colossians to know Christ, and he encourages them that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are found in Him. In application, we have to value the riches available in Christ. We need to meditate on this! In v. 4, the main purpose of the letter is given: Paul wants to protect the church from false teachers. In v. 5, Paul rejoices in the Colossians' firmness. In application, we need to cultivate our order and firmness in Christ. In this passage, we see the importance of pursuing knowledge and maturity in Christ, not for the puffing up of our minds, but for our firmness of faith and to abide in God's love. Let us put Christ as the center of our lives!

Christ, Center of Scripture - Psalms

Theme: God is sovereign and man is responsible to believe the good news of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection of which all Scripture testifies. Various Psalms speak of Christ including: Psalm 2, 118:22-24, 41:9, 68:18, 69:21, and 69:4. The sufferings of Christ are described and prophesied in Psalm 22, and His glory is declared in Psalm 98. Though the resurrection of Jesus is glorious, it is not the final glory. For, as we will see, the final glory will be the eternal kingdom of the Son of God. The focus of Jesus in the Psalms is that of a King! As you reflect on Christ in the Psalms, do you have joy of forgiveness, joy of salvation, have you received the King?

Theme: God is sovereign and man is responsible to believe the good news of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection of which all Scripture testifies. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Zechariah, Jonah, and Daniel all prophesy of the suffering Savior Who would overcome. In Isaiah 52:13, we see God's Servant is exalted, in v. 14, God's Servant suffers, and in v. 15, God's Servant is proclaimed. As you reflect on Christ's sufferings and His glory, do you see the suffering of Jesus as the suffering for sin you deserve? Have you trusted in Christ to be the Priest who can wash you clean from your sin? Who can you declare this glorious truth to?

Theme: God is sovereign and man is responsible to believe the good news of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection of which all Scripture testifies. Jesus' main points as He spoke with the disciples were that Christ should 1) suffer these things of the cross and 2) enter into His glory. The disciples didn't want Him to leave, but implored Him to stay with them. In application, we should enjoy the presence of Jesus and recognize His supreme excellence. In vv. 33-35, the disciples testify of Jesus' resurrection. It is crucial that we remember the resurrection of Jesus and all the implications it has for us as believers!

The Confused Disciples

Theme: God is sovereign and man is responsible to believe the good news of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection of which all Scripture testifies. In vv. 13-24, we see Jesus' conversation with the disciples. They explain their sadness and confusion at the recent events, yet do not recognize that it is Jesus with whom they are speaking. In vv. 25-27, we see Jesus' rebuke and teaching with the disciples; they were foolish and slow of heart to believe the Word of God. Jesus explained to them from the Scriptures how all things were written about Him. In vv. 28-32, we read of Jesus' meal with the disciples, and in vv. 33-35 the disciples testify of Jesus' resurrection vv. 33-35. In application, we need to recognize the nearness of Jesus and consider His promises to always be with us, as well as the giving of the Holy Spirit. Secondly, we need to heal our feelings with truth. Either our feelings will dictate what we believe, or we will allow truth to inform our feelings. Finally, we need to see the impact of encountering the risen Jesus. When we encounter the resurrected Lord, He gives us new purpose and new life.

Resurrection of the King

Theme: The factual resurrection of the Lord Jesus is His exalted victory and is life changing for those who have faith in Him. In vv. 1-3, the women go to the tomb, and in vv. 4-8 the angels deliver the message. While the women had been told by Christ that He would rise from the dead, they hadn't really understood or believed. In application, we need to be careful to listen to the Word of Christ. In vv. 9-12, the women share the resurrection news. With this eyewitness account of the events following Jesus' resurrection, we should appreciate the simplicity and depth of the death and resurrection and know that the Christian faith is a true and living faith! If you don't know the risen Savior, turn to him today and believe. As He had new life, so He will give it to you. And dear Christian, if you know Christ, are you living in His resurrection power? Are you seriously listening to His word? Are you, like the women, sharing the good news of His resurrection with anyone? May the Lord grant us grace to grow closer to Him and walk with our resurrected Savior for His glory.

The King's Burial

Theme: Despite the shame of the cross, Jesus is given a royal burial by His faithful followers which points to the exaltation of His resurrection. In vv. 50-53, we read about Joseph and the burial. We learn how the Spirit gave him courage to ask for the body of Jesus, and though he was a wealthy man with influence and power, his heart was set on God's kingdom. In application, we should ask God for boldness in our faith, and set our affections on God and His Kingdom. In vv. 54-55, we read of the women and the preparation for Jesus' burial. They had deep devotion to Christ, and the Lord's law. In application, we need to express our love to Christ. In conclusion, we are thrilled to know that though Jesus died and was buried, the grave was not able to keep him. Death could not hold him. He would rise on the third day. His death on the cross was filled with wrath, agony, and shame, but his burial was royal. For the King arose. Let us seek to be faithful followers of Jesus like Joseph of Arimathea, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James.

The Death of Jesus

Theme: The finished work of Christ gives us the privilege of entering into the presence of God. In vv. 44-45, the signs are revealed. The first sign is that of darkness This is in contrast to His birth, which was announced by the light of the glory of God. In His death, darkness comes upon the earth, which in the Bible represents that the judgment of God was upon Him. This occurrence should cause us to understand the righteousness of God. The second sign was that of the curtain being torn in two. This is showing us that we are now able to enter before the throne of God. God's people are finally reconciled and can enter God's presence with full assurance. In v. 46, we read the prayer uttered. Jesus gave His life, no one took it from Him, and in the midst of despair and cruel judgment of others, He is entrusting himself to God. In application, commit all of your life to God's care.

Forgiving Like Jesus

Theme: Jesus offered forgiveness from the heart to all, but only those who repent and believe are reconciled and obtain complete forgiveness. In vv. 32-38, Jesus offers forgiveness, but in vv. 39-43, we see that Jesus grants forgiveness. There is a difference between attitudinal and transactional forgiveness (from David Powlison). As we meditate on the forgiveness that Jesus offers, we see the necessity to have an inward attitude of forgiveness from our hearts to all, this is forgiveness. From Jesus's example of actually granting forgiveness, we see that we should seek to have outward transactional forgiveness toward all, this is reconciliation. We need to recognize how essential repentance is for reconciliation, and beware of peace at all costs. It is important to understand that forgiveness can be given even when reconciliation is not possible. We are called to be like Jesus - to forgive as we have been forgiven. But it is also important to see forgiveness not as the end but as a part of the end, which is reconciliation. Let us be people who humbly seek the Lord's grace and forgiveness and seek to forgive others from the heart. Not only in attitude but also in restoring relationships with full reconciliation. Remember, if possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Jesus Is Crucified

Theme: Jesus forgives and saves sinners, during His own crucifixion.
In vv. 32-33, we see the place where death and grace meet. In vv. 34-38, Jesus offers forgiveness in the midst of mockery, and in vv. 39-43, the two criminals make their final requests. Reflections on this passage help us to: 1. See the true mission of God: Jesus came to save His people from their sins. 2. Recognize the miracle of faith: The thief's faith can only be attributed to the Spirit of God. 3. Embrace the forgiveness of Christ: The thief asked Jesus to remember him. He was asking for grace and mercy. That is what we need. 4. Rest in the Assurance Christ gives: Note how Jesus personally gives this to the thief. He gives assurance to all who call upon Him. In conclusion, we see that Jesus was crucified, willingly. But on the cross we see love beyond description displayed. We see forgiveness offered and rejected. We see forgiveness also received. In the end, we all need forgiveness that leads to reconciliation. For to repent of our sins and believe on Christ, is indeed to have everlasting life, and that life begins today!

Theme: You once were lost and under God's wrath. Now in Christ you are put into union with Christ and have peace with God and every other believer. You are being placed into God's household as living stones on the sure foundation of Christ, the apostles, and prophets. In vv. 11-12, we see we need to remember our former state. In application, we come into this world uncircumcised as an object lesson. We are actually uncircumcised in heart. We are surrounded by pagans and unbelieving Jews (who are all uncircumcised in heart) especially in this post-modern world in which we live, and we must represent Christ faithfully to them. In vv. 13-18, we see the importance of understanding the benefits of our present condition. In application, we are to understand that our vertical reconciliation with God through Christ has led to horizontal reconciliation with our fellow believers. Finally, in vv. 19-22, we see the need to realize what God is building for His glory, and in application, we should recognize the corporate nature of what God is building. Remember how you were separated from God, let the knowledge that you are now in union with Christ comfort you, knowing that God is chiseling us to be His living stones!

Jesus's Compassion During Crucifixion

Theme: In the midst of His own impending death, Jesus shows great compassion and exhortation to others. In v. 26, Simon carries Jesus's cross. This is a picture of true discipleship, and we need to discern if we are truly following Christ. True discipleship denies oneself and follows Jesus - not the culture, not the world, but Jesus. In vv. 27-31, Jesus has compassion on the weeping women. We need to emulate Jesus's selflessness. We also need to reflect on people's most important problem. Jesus knew the people's most important problem was their idolatry, their rejection of God. The absolute greatest need is for people to know the true and living God and to turn from their sins and believe on Christ. It is wise to prepare for the future, not only our future here on earth but most importantly, the future of eternal life. Let us look to Christ as the Author and finisher of our faith. Let us deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Him. Let us have our priorities straight and take the warning Christ selflessly gave these women and all Israel. We need to be prepared for the judgment of God.

Jesus Is Sentenced

Theme: The epitome of injustice is found in the condemning of the innocent Son of God to death; yet God is working for our good and His glory. In vv. 13-16, Pilate renders the verdict; Jesus is innocent. Then the crowd renders its judgment; they want Jesus crucified, and Pilate acquiesces to the crowds' demands in vv. 17-25. As we consider this passage, there are several reflections. 1. Consider your allegiance to Christ (The crowd so easily has changed on Jesus). Are you a true follower of Christ? 2. Consider the great exchange: Jesus, the Son of God for Barabbas, the son of the father. 3. Consider your freedom in Christ. In conclusion, we see the horrible injustice. Jesus was not guilty, yet He was condemned. This was the height of injustice, but God worked this for His glory and our good. The great exchange is ours: our sin for His righteousness. His glory is seen in that no other could show such incredible love!

The Silent King

Theme: Though Jesus is mocked, He remains silently confident in and submissive to His Father's sovereign plan for the redemption of His people. In vv. 6-9, Jesus is sent to Herod for trial and remains silent, answering not a word. Jesus is mocked by Herod in vv. 10-11, and His enemies, Pilate and Herod become friends in v. 12. As we reflect on this account of what Jesus suffered for us, there are some lessons we can learn. 1. Beware of making God your entertainment. Our God is a consuming fire! 2. Model Jesus's self-control. 3. Assess Jesus's innocence: Injustice was done, that holy justice might be done on Jesus so that we might receive mercy. 4. Value silence: As Proverbs has shown us, wisdom does not cast pearls before swine; we can have confidence as Jesus did that prophecy will be fulfilled. Jesus knew Who was in charge, and we can trust and rest our lives in God's hands and sovereign control as Jesus did. May we look at Christ and see the incredible steadfast love He has for us. He was unjustly accused, that we might be brought to God. Hallelujah what a Savior!

Trial of Jesus: Pilate

Theme: God uses evil, even gross injustice, for His glory and the good of His people. In vv. 1-2 we read of the Roman trial beginning and the Jewish prosecution's claims. In vv. 4-5, Pilate rules, and the Jews protest. As we reflect on this trial of Jesus, there are some attributes of Pilate as well as the Jews that led them to act as they did, and we should search our own hearts and beware of these same temptations. Reflections: 1. Be careful not to give over Jesus for idols. 2. Be aware of inconsistencies in our lives. 3. Beware of pragmatism. 4. Trust the Lord, for this world is not all there is. While we can learn some things from the Sanhedrin and Pilate, let us not lose sight of the bigger picture. That our Sovereign God, Who does all that He pleases, is working all this our for our good and ultimately for His glory. In the absolute worst injustice that has ever happened, God was on the throne. God was in control. God was working it for His glory and for our good.

Trial of Jesus

Theme: Jesus's identity demands a verdict. In v. 66, the council gathers. In vv. 67-69, we see the defining issue and the Savior's declaration. The council is looking for something on which to convict Jesus. Jesus does not honor their question with a strong affirming answer because He knows they have hardened their hearts and do not seek the truth. However, He then gives them enough with His statement that the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of God, so that they will convict Him. They knew He was alluding to Deity. With this statement, Jesus lays down His life as He said He would. In vv. 70-71, the clarifying statement is given, and the verdict is rendered.Reflections to consider as we meditate on this passage are: 1. Realize everyone makes a verdict about Jesus.
 2. Marvel at the majesty of who Jesus truly is.
 3. Ask Who is Lord of your life.
 4. Hope in the future with Christ.
In this passage, we see that Jesus indeed is both man and God. And He willingly gave the leaders the information they needed to put him to death. Yet he remained in control. He laid down his own life for His people. Jesus was judged, but one day He will be the judge - the righteous judge. Those who reject Him will bear their guilt. Those who take Jesus as their Lord and Savior will find mercy and grace and their sins though as scarlet will be whiter than snow.

Blasphemy of Christ, Pt. 2

Theme: Followers of Christ should recognize the deep love our Savior had for us by being mocked and scorned so we might be healed and live. As we reflect on how Jesus was beaten, blindfolded, and blasphemed, we should believe and meditate on the fact that Christ is our substitute. He was considered unclean, and He was condemned for our blasphemy. Jesus knew no sin, yet He took our sin that we might be made the righteousness of God. Secondly, we need to believe and reflect on the truth that Christ is our propitiation. God's righteousness and great love are shown in the fact that He poured out His wrath on his Son because of our sin.
In order for us to be accepted by God, His wrath against our sin had to be appeased. Thirdly, we need to believe that Christ is our mercy. Propitiation and mercy are connected. His sacrifice was accepted by the Father. He suffered that we might receive mercy!

Blasphemy of Christ

Theme: Followers of Christ should recognize the deep love our Savior had for us by being mocked and scorned so we might be healed and live. In v. 63, Jesus is mocked and beaten in fulfillment of Isaiah 50:6. In v. 64, Jesus is blindfolded, and they continue to mock Him. In v. 65, Jesus is blasphemed. According to historical writings, Jesus was called a sorcerer and a deceiver of the people. So why does Luke paint this gruesome display of what happened to Jesus? As we reflect on this, we must realize what Christ has done for us. It's not something that we get over. It's not make a decision for Jesus and then move on our own way. We are to understand the serious penalty of sin we were under, the love of God that set us free, and the healing that is found in Christ.

The Surprising Son of Man

The truth that Christ has all power and authority as seen in John's vision in Revelation 1 is meant to sustain us in our work and witness for Him. John is exiled for his witness, yet his mindset is active, courageous advancement of the Kingdom! In vv. 12-20, we read about what John saw. As he describes what the Son of Man looks like we see the power, purity, beauty, and terror of Jesus in all His glory. Yet, Jesus tells John to "Fear not!" He can say this because of the atonement He has made for His people. Death and hell belong to Him! He has the keys! In the same way, we are not to be afraid, but go forth courageously in His power as we work and bear witness for Him!

Off With the Old, On With the New

Followers of Jesus should intentionally put to death the old man and pursue the character of Christ. Since God has lavished His love on us, we should joyfully strive to put on the character of our Savior. We are chosen by God, justified, and beloved, not because of our works but according to His own purpose and grace. Therefore, we are to glorify Him with our lives. We should cultivate the traits of Jesus in order to glorify Him. Putting off the old man is not easy, but we are complete in Christ, and we are to live out of that truth. It requires a conscious effort to resist our sinful desires and to conform our thoughts and actions to the will of God. But it is essential for our spiritual growth and for the glory of God. We are to put on compassion, kindness, humility, and patience. As we seek to live these out, we must remember how God has shown them to us. Additionally, we should be living testimonies of the grace of God by forgiving others as Jesus forgave us. We cannot not do this in our own strength. God has given us His Spirit, and He will enable us. But if we practice these virtues without love, it is legalism. Love is the motivation that must cause us to do these good works. This strengthens the unity of the body of Christ. Let us therefore be intentional about putting off the old man and putting on Christ. Let us seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit and to walk in obedience to God's Word. And let us do all things for the glory of God.

Confession of Sin

Theme: When God's people sincerely confess their sins to Him, the LORD is gracious to restore us to joyful fellowship and service. To live in ongoing fellowship with the Lord, we are called to confess our sins to Him. We don't lose our salvation when we sin, but we do lose our fellowship. Just as Peter and David sinned against God and sought forgiveness, so must we. In Psalm 51, we see a model for repentance. In vv. 1-2, David appeals to God for mercy based on His character. In vv. 3-6, he admits his sin to God, and we see two truths: first, of original sin in v. 5, and second, that God delights in us walking according to His wisdom from our hearts in v. 6. In vv. 7-12, David asks God for forgiveness and restoration, and in vv. 13-17 he anticipates a renewed relationship with God. He adjures God to be pleased with His people in vv. 18-19. In conclusion, confession for the Christian is a part of life; we are called to live a life of confession before God. As in any relationship, sin will interfere, and we need to make things right. For the Christian, our initial coming to Christ involved confession, and our life must continue to include confession. The most wonderful thing to know is that when we confess our sins, He will always forgive!

Theme: Despite our faithlessness to Him, Jesus always remains faithful to His true children. In vv. 54-60, we see Peter's circumstances and his temptation, and in vv. 61-62, we see Jesus's look at Peter and Peter's repentance. In application, we need to realize that after spiritual victory comes temptation and also be aware of reasons for failing. In this account, we can compare full vs. partial falling away (Judas and Peter), and we see the absolute necessity to press on in sanctification. We as followers of Christ need to take a firm stand for Him, but recognize that when we do sin, we should mourn, repent, embrace the forgiveness of Christ, and serve Him again.

Jesus Lord over the Power of Darkness

Theme: Despite personal betrayal, powerful enemies, and spiritual darkness, Jesus remains in control of every situation. In vv. 47-48, we see Judas's betrayal, and in application, we learn that we need to be careful about covering our sin. The only way we should seek to have our sin covered is by the blood of Christ. In vv. 49-50, we see the disciples' reaction. They ask Jesus a question, but do not wait for His answer. We see through this that we should be prayerful but not impetuous, otherwise we will just be leaning on our own wisdom and understanding. In v. 51 we see the compassion of Jesus to heal and care for a man who is lost. In vv. 52-53, Jesus speaks to the leaders and reveals their hypocrisy. Though Jesus was betrayed, and arrested and the hour of darkness had come, we see that all was according to God's plan, and Christ would overcome the darkness and be the victor so that we could be made righteous. We learn to not walk in fear of the darkness, but in the fear of the Lord because Jesus is in control of all.

Jesus Strengthened Through Prayer

Theme: Jesus is the ultimate example that God comforts and strengthens His children when they come to Him through humble prayer in their time of need. In vv. 39-41, the importance of prayer is exemplified. In this passage, we see that prayer is not just about getting answers, it isn't even about getting the trial removed, it is about submitting to God's will and being strengthened to go through it. In vv. 42-44, we see the comfort and strength through prayer proven. Jesus's request that the cup be removed if possible is not a cowardly response. The request to keep it from Christ was actually a righteous cry, followed by Jesus's holy submission. In vv. 45-46, the neglect of prayer is illustrated as the disciples fail to pray as Jesus had asked them. While we will never endure what our Lord did, we can still glean some things from this. We need to recognize that a deep dependence on God is needed, be submissive in our attitude toward God's will, meditate on Christ's humanity and His relatability to us, and be appalled by sin, yet rejoice in the second Adam who persevered. If our Savior persevered through prayer, should we not pray too? Should we not seek Heaven's help when we are in our time of need? Let us rejoice that He overcame and see the example He has set for us.

Jesus Equips His Followers

Theme: Jesus calls His disciples to live and minister during hard times, but He always provides for their every need! In v. 35, Jesus recalls His past faithfulness. It is good for us to remember God's past provisions, as we face new challenges. Jesus reminds His disciples of His past faithfulness and then predicts that there will be hard times ahead in vv. 36-37. He is telling His disciples so they will be prepared, and in application, we need to purposely prepare to fulfill the mission of God. We prepare, and yet, ultimately we trust God. In v. 38, we see that the disciples miss the main point. We need to learn from this, and not allow ourselves to get sidetracked from the true mission. In conclusion, we need to know that serving the Lord Jesus is not easy. We are not above our Master. So be prepared to serve Him. Do the hard thing. Do the hard work. We need to do our best and leave the results to God alone. Trust in Him.

Theme: When Jesus prays for His own, followers of Christ have everything they need to flourish in the Christian life. In John 17, we see six truths that are ours because Jesus prays for us. 1. We can have confidence that Christ finished His work, vv. 4-10. 2. We can have assurance that our relationship with God is secure, vv. 11-12. 3. We can have joyful lives, vv. 13-14. 4. We can have growth in Christ-likeness vv. 15-20. 5. We can have unity in Christ's love vv. 21-25. 6. We can experience the love of God v. 26. It should be an astounding thing to us that Christ prays for us. It should help us to have peace in our lives, recognizing that we indeed have everything we need to have a thriving Christian life!

Note: Small audio section missing due to technical difficulties. Theme: Followers of Christ must understand the spiritual warfare that is going on and that our endurance and service are due to Christ's power alone. In v. 31, we see the spiritual warfare that is going on that Peter did not realize. Satan desires to destroy Peter's faith. We need to be aware of the "real world" and the spiritual warfare that is going on though we cannot see it. Satan only has power which God allows, but in v. 32 we see the Savior's intercession and should be grateful for Christ holding fast His own. In v. 33, we see the servant's self-deception. In Peter's overconfidence, we learn we need to be aware of the weakness of the flesh. Verse 34 gives the Savior's prophetic correction. Through this, we understand God knows us better than we know ourselves. Let us be aware of Satan and know that all we see is not all that is there. We truly need to understand the "real world." There is evil and there is good. We need to understand that though trials and temptations will come, we have a great Savior who intercedes for us. He has prayed for us. And though we may fail, we have a Savior who is ready to forgive and restore us to serve Him.

Theme: Sincere obedience comes through an honest understanding of the nature of God. In Lamentations, we see the results of Israel rebelling against God, and God's response to their sin was to remove Himself and destruction would follow. A thorough examination of the grief over the destruction of Jerusalem is given in this book; however, the author puts boundaries on his overwhelming grief for the glory of God. As judgment falls due to the people's sins, God's faithfulness is seen in that He fulfills His Word, that He will judge sin. However, He is merciful, and His mercies are new every morning. Lamentations is a record of what true repentance looks like. In application, our sin should cause us grief and mourning. With repentance, there is mercy. The repentance seen in Lamentations leads to belief in God because of His faithfulness. He will one day restore His people. In application, as believers, we need to consistently and honestly evaluate our hearts, repent, incline our hearts to God, and He will restore. He is faithful!

You Must Be Born Again

Through this account of Nicodemus, the nature of the new birth is given. As Jesus told Nicodemus, we must be born again to be saved. We are regenerated through the Spirit's drawing us to Himself, and before we will come to God, we must be changed. To be born again, we must face and believe that Jesus is Who He says He is and that we are who Jesus says we are. Repentance, a key component of salvation, means we have a profound change of mind that affects how we act. True repentance is willing to be "all in" for Christ, and our actions will show what we truly believe. Jesus is the way of salvation to all who will look to Him, and those who have been drawn by the Father will come to Him.

Pride, Humility, and Jesus

Theme: Believers in Christ should seek to eradicate pride from their lives and aspire to serve the Lord Jesus from their heart! In v. 24, we see the disciples' dispute. In application, we need to recognize the depth of pride in our hearts. In vv. 25-27, we see the Savior's solution. Jesus teaches them true greatness is found in being a servant, which He has taught them by His example. We learn from this to seek to humbly serve Christ in all we do. In vv. 28-29, we see the Heavenly Hesed. Despite their pride and misunderstanding of His Kingdom, Jesus blesses them. We should marvel at Jesus' kindness and emulate it. We also see that in Christ we already have everything, and from that fullness, we are free to love and serve others lavishly as Jesus does. Let us turn our eyes to Jesus, rest in all the blessings we have as His fellow heirs, and seek to love and serve others with a heart of love and devotion to Christ!

The Passover Meal, Part Two

Theme: On His own time, Jesus tenderly fellowships with His disciples before fulfilling His mission of being the true Passover Lamb and securing salvation for His people. In vv. 17-20, we see the representation of the Passover meal, and we need to remind ourselves of the implications of the death of Jesus, remembering this is what Christ did for us. In vv. 21-23, we see the tension at the Passover. Both Divine sovereignty and human responsibility are revealed. Ultimately, we see that the fulfillment of the Passover has come. If you do not know Christ, call upon Him today and be saved! If you do know Him, may your trust in Him be the sure foundation upon which you stand.

Theme: On His own time, Jesus tenderly fellowships with His disciples before fulfilling His mission of being the true Passover Lamb and securing salvation for His people. In vv. 7-13, the preparation of the Passover meal is described. In application, we need to meditate on Christ's perfection and marvel at His Deity. In vv. 14-16, we see Christ's desire in the Passover meal. As we reflect on this, we need to embrace Christ's desire to fellowship with us. Because of Christ's sacrifice for us, we can come to Him and fellowship with Him freely!
