Peace in Jerusalem?

Will there be Peace in Jerusalem? Israel is currently at war with hostile enemies. Sadly, many Christians in our Australian Churches have not been taught the importance of the Jewish Nation to the world and that we must stand against the tide of antisemitism that the Jewish people face. The Church today needs to be reminded of the words of the German Pastor Martin Nie-moll-er who was interned in German Concentration Camps in WWII until his final release in April 1945. Pastor Martin wrote: "First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist, Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out, Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me And there was no one left, To speak out for me." God's eternal purpose is to bless the world through Israel, and we must never forget what the Lord Jesus told the woman at the well in John 4:22… "salvation is of the Jews". The Jewish nation has been a blessing to the World in so many areas. But the two greatest blessings that have come from that nation of Israel to the World are the Word of God and The Son of God. When the Bible is freely available in a nation you will find blessing in that nation. Where the Bible has influenced a nation you will find justice in laws, freedom in society and care for others in need. Where the Bible has influenced a nation, you will have worshippers and servants of the living God and His Son Jesus Christ. Where the Bible is suppressed in a nation you will find injustice.

The Prodigal's Brother

The Bible shows us that our Father in Heaven is a God of grace. Grace is blessings given freely and is never a result of work that was performed. You cant earn God's grace by any work that you have performed, or by any religious rite that you have undergone. Charles Ryrie says. "Grace is: That which God does for mankind through his Son, which mankind cannot earn, does not deserve, and will never merit." Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men. Our father in Heaven is a God of both Grace and Mercy. Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: Have you ever thought what the difference is between Grace and Mercy? Mercy is God withholding from us the punishment we deserve. Because of our sin and rebellion each of us deserve Hell. The good news of the Gospel is that God the Father withholds from us the punishment that we deserve because He sent His own Son to take the punishment for our sins upon Himself. Grace is God giving us what we do not deserve. Grace is the unmerited favour of God to sinful humanity in providing the free gift of salvation for us. The Younger son had been lost in the pigsty in a far country but the older son was also lost on the property of his father. The younger son was out of relationship with his father in that distant land but the older son was out of relationship with the father on the Father's land.

The Good Samaritan

In Luke 10 a Lawyer comes to Jesus with a great question. Luke 10.25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Have you ever asked that question?... What shall I do to inherit eternal life? This Lawyer knew that life didn't end at the grave and he also knew God's commandements All of us from the moment we are born will live for eternity and when you pass away in this life you will either live in a glorious eternity with God's people or you will live in an eternity under the Judgement and wrath of God. You've got to settle that question now if you are not saved, don't wait till eternity. I want you to notice that the Lord Jesus refers this man back to the Law. The Law doesn't save anyone but the Law should bring conviction. There is no conversion without conviction and God uses the Law to convict us of our sin. In order for anyone to be saved they must be convicted of their sin and God's Word brings conviction! Now the Lord Jesus in answer to the Lawyer's question, "Who is my neighbour" tells the Lawyer about the Good Samaritan. The Priest and the Levite had the opportunity to be a good influence in bad world but they did nothing. Now for the Lawyer to hear from Jesus about a Samaritan being the compassionate hero of the Story would have been quiet a shock to the Lawyer. We can assume that the Lawyer was a Jew because he knew the Word of God. Yet in this story it is not the Priest or Levite who are the heroes. The Samaritan's love saw the wounded man. Love not only sees him but love goes to him. Love has compassion on him. Love binds his wounds. Love pays for recovery of the man.

The Welsh Revival

Ninety-Three year old Alwyn Williams speaks at the Newcastle Baptist Tabernacle about the Welsh Revival. Alwyn's father saw the effects of revival, whilst working as a miner in the United Kingdom in the beautiful country of Wales. "Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? Shew us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation" (Psalm 85.6-7)

Caleb's Courage

As we look at the character of Caleb there are 3 things that we can learn from Caleb that will help all of us on our Christian journey. First of all this morning we will see that Caleb was a Man of Commitment. Secondly; Caleb was a Man of Courage. Thirdly; Caleb was a Man of Combat. As you read the Words of Caleb in the Bible there is one verse that sticks out that gives us an insight into his character. When Caleb looks back at his life and at the age of 85 he makes this statement found in Joshua 14.8. Josh 14:8 … I wholly followed the Lord my God. What a great statement that is: As this aged man of God surveyed his life he knew that he had commitment and had given himself unreservedly to the living God. The Apostle Paul pleads with us to do the same in the Book of Romans. He asks us to give our lives as a living sacrifice. Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. If you are a Christian do you practice what you preach. Caleb had Commitment and courage. Out of all the spies that went into the land, two stood strong. Caleb and Joshua. Joshua and Caleb were men of courage. They were willing to take the Land and were prepared to stand against the majority whom had put fear over faith. There's a lesson for God's people here: Never be afraid to be in the minority when you know the will of God! If you go back through both biblical and world history you will often find that when God's man or God's woman take God's stand for God's honour in many cases they stand alone or with just a few.

Paul in Rome

In Acts 28 finally, through many dangers Paul arrives in that ancient City. In Acts 28 we read: Acts 28:16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him. From Acts 28 we understand that Paul spent two years in a hired house under Roman Guard. In Rome Paul took the opportunity to witness to both Jews and Gentiles. Paul always had a concern for his people the Jews to hear the Gospel and often Paul would witness to the Jews first when he came to various cities. Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Paul's policy was to share with the Jew first in numbers of cities: Paul had been a zealous Jew before his conversion and the Jews were a people group that he could also easily identify with to bring the Gospel truths to them. So in Acts 28 just days after Paul gets to Rome, Paul calls the Jewish leaders to meet with him. Paul knew that the Jews were religious, but yet not right with God and they needed the Gospel. Rom 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. 2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. Have you got a people group that you can understand exactly how they think and then be a witness to them?

Shipwreck Security

In Acts 27 The Apostle Paul is a prisoner on a ship being taken to Rome to appear before Caesar. Luke is also on the ship with Paul and Luke writes a first-hand account of a storm that they encountered on their voyage that lasted 2 weeks. I don't know about you but if I was on a small wooden ship battling a storm for two weeks then I think I'd be pretty tired and traumatized. Well as you see Paul in this passage, rather than being traumatised, Paul was triumphant, even in the midst of a shipwreck. Here in Acts 27 Paul the Captive becomes Paul the Captain giving directions to all on board. Paul could cope with every shipwreck in his life because Paul had security in every storm. In every storm Paul encountered he had a solid foundation, Paul was anchored upon the rock, the Lord Jesus Christ!

Security in Every Storm

Today I want to talk about "The Saint's Security in Every Storm". If you're a believer in Jesus Christ I can guarantee that you are going to go through some storms in this life. The Apostle Paul had more than his full share of storms and trials and troubles in his life. Yet Paul could say: Rom 5:3… but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Rom 8:37 ….in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. In every storm Paul could rejoice: You could put Paul in Prison and yet He'd praise God. He and Silas sang songs at midnight in the dark dungeon of the Philippian gaol. You could put Paul before Centurions and even Kings and he'd fearlessly declare the Gospel, no matter what the consequences. Whatever situation Paul was in he was ROCK SOLID… because Paul knew the SOLID ROCK. Paul was a saint that suffered many a storm, yet Paul could say: Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Are you going through a storm in your life now? If your going through a storm today then Acts 27 is a passage for you. You can be Rock Solid like Paul if you know the Solid Rock the Lord Jesus Christ. "We have an anchor that keeps the soul, Steadfast and sure while the billows roll, Fastened to the Rock which cannot move, Grounded firm and deep in the Saviours love." If your not in a storm now… then when you are in a storm you have got to remember Acts 27 because Paul had security in every storm!

Born or Born Again?

In Acts 26 we find the word Christian. Did you know that the word Christian/Christians only occurs 3 times in our Bibles? 1 Peter 4:12 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. Acts 11:26 … And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. Acts 26:28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian. Now there are people in Australia that say that they are Christians because they believe that Australia is a Christian country and because their born here that makes them a Christian. I've got to tell you being born in Australia doesn't make you a Christian you've got to me Born Again! Now there are others that think that they are a Christian because their parents are Christians. If your born into a Christian family that does not make you a Christian…You've got to be born again! Others might say I'm a Christian because, I've been in Church since I was a baby. Being in Church for years doesn't make you a Christian …You've got to be born again. In John Chapter 3 Jesus spoke to a very religious man called Nicodemus and in John 3.1 Jesus said: John 3:1 …Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Jesus said to Nicodemus again: John 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. To become a Christian and to have a home in Heaven, Nicodemus had to be born again. In Acts 26 Agrippa was almost persuaded to become a Christian.

The Perils of Procrastination

The Cambridge Dictionary gives a definition of Procrastination. Procrastination according to the Cambridge Dictionary is: The act of delaying something that must be done. Are you a Procrastinator or are you the opposite? In Acts 22 Paul gives his testimony to the Jews at Jerusalem and reveals to a Roman Centurion that Paul Himself is a Roman (Acts 22.25). In Acts 23 more than 40 Jewish men make a vow to kill Paul and the Romans give Paul an armoured guard of 470 trained Roman soldiers to escort Paul out of Jerusalem. Paul was also provided with horses to safely take him to Felix the Roman Governor in Caesarea. Now in Acts Chapter 24 Paul gets to witness to the Roman Governor Felix and his wife Drusilla. A. T. Robertson states of Felix, 'He was one of the most depraved men of his time'. Another commentator stated about Felix that 'his court reeked with blood and debauchery.' Felix and Drusilla were in an unlawful relationship. Felix was an evil man and Drusilla came from an evil dysfunctional Royal Family. Now when you read Acts 24 Felix wanted money from Paul but he got something far more valuable than money from Paul. Felix got a message from Paul. He got the most important message anyone can receive and it was a message about faith in Jesus Christ. Paul's message to Felix made Felix the sin hardened Roman Governor tremble before Paul. God brought the greatest missionary living at the time of Felix right into Felix's presence, yet Felix procrastinated. We never hear again of Felix in the Bible after Acts 25 and more than likely he and his wife went off to a Christless eternity.

In Acts 20 Paul departs Ephesus after a ministry there of around 3 years. Many Ephesians heard the Gospel and not only Ephesians but the whole of Asia minor was affected by the witness of Paul and his missionary companions. Paul was the voice of God to a Pagan World. Acts 19:10 ...all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. God changed Ephesus through a Preacher of the Gospel. God changed Ephesus through a Purified Church. Thirdly God changed Ephesus through the Prevailing Word. Acts 19:20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed. When the Gospel is proclaimed even in the darkest of places God can impact a whole City! In Acts 20 Paul talks about the Endeavours of the Church. In Acts 20 Paul talks about the Excellency of the Church In Acts 20 Paul also talked about the Enemies of the Church. We need to remember that the Early Church had enemies around them and enemies within them and it is the same today! The Lord Jesus warned of wolves in sheep's clothing! Matt 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

In Acts Chapter 19 Paul is on his Third Missionary Journey when he arrives in the City of Ephesus. Acts 19:1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, Ephesus was a major center of Pagan worship. This morning I want us to see that God changed this Pagan place of Ephesus in three wonderful ways. God changed Ephesus through a Preacher of the Gospel. God changed Ephesus through a Purified Church. Thirdly God changed Ephesus through the Prevailing Word.

This sermon compares the days of Noah to the present days in which we live in. In Matthew 24 The Lord Jesus spoke about the coming Tribulation Period and the days of Noah. Today we can see that we are indeed living in times very similar to the days of Noah.

Are Tongues For Today?

In Acts 19 the Apostle Paul meets some religious men that are called Disciples who had previously received the baptism of John the Baptist. Paul wanted to know whether they had received the Holy Spirit when they believed, and he asked them also about their Baptism. In talking with these men Paul must have concluded that they were not Christians as they had no idea of the Holy Spirit's ministry and they had not received believer's baptism. These men had received John's baptism which was not a Christian baptism. John the Baptist at the time of Jesus, had identified the Lord Jesus as the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world and he called the Nation of Israel to repentance. There are people like these men in Acts 19, today all around the world. There are many that might even call themselves Christians, they are religious and yet not right with God. There are people that have been baptized in Anglican Churches and Presbyterian Churches and Catholic Churches and even Baptist Churches that call themselves Christians but have not understood the Gospel and therefore have not received the Holy Spirit. You can be baptized in a Church or even in a river in the name of Jesus but if you do not understand the Gospel then you are not saved. This sermon also examines the miraculous gift of tongues given at Pentecost.

Deborah a Woman of Faith

When you study the book of Judges you will find it covers a period of over 400 years where Israel found themselves in a sin cycle of disobedience. The Canaanites were a depraved people. They worshipped other gods. They practiced child sacrifice. The Canaanite religion was made up of Idolatry and Sex, for the pursuit of material Success. Israel was to have a no toleration policy of the beliefs and actions of the Canaanites. But sadly in the book of Judges they even began to serve the Pagan gods. Judg 2:11 KJV And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim: Now when we meet Deborah in Judges 4 we find the Israelites are caught in the sin cycle again. Judg 4:1 KJV And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, when Ehud was dead. 2 And the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles. 3 And the children of Israel cried unto the Lord: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel. 4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. 5 And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. In Judges Chapter 4 things are really hard for the Tribes of Israel. Ehud was a godly Judge who had brought Israel 80 years of rest. That was the longest period of peace recorded in the Book of Judges. When Ehud died the nation of Israel went back into idolatry but fortunately the Lord raised up a Godly woman called Deborah.

Thomas The Disciple Of Doubt

This morning I would like to look at Jesus's resurrection appearance to Thomas. Thomas means twin and he was a disciple of Jesus. After Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared in bodily form and spent 40 days ministering and teaching His Disciples, before He went back to Heaven. Thomas was not with the disciples on the first resurrection Sunday when they were assembled together and when Jesus appeared to them. Jesus had predicted that He would die and rise again. His disciples didn't understand that. Thomas was not the only one that doubted the resurrection. Thomas loved Jesus, Thomas was loyal to Jesus and he would have been experiencing terrible grief after the crucifixion of Jesus. He'd followed Jesus, and Jesus had died. But Thomas has gone down in history as the doubter. Did you know that there are two kinds of doubters in the realm of spiritual truth? a. Some doubters say I will not believe. b. There are others that say I don't believe but I'm willing to believe if I can just see the evidence myself. Some people are satisfied with the testimony of others. Some are not. Thomas was not. Jesus sends us into the world, just as Jesus sent His Disciples into the World. In spite of their many failures The Lord was entrusting His Disciples with His Word and His Work. They had forsaken Him and fled, yet Jesus still commissioned them.

Seven Statements From Calvary

History has recorded for us the last words of several famous people before they died. Moses gave Israel a song to Israel on the day he died. In our reading from Luke we have recorded some of the last words of Jesus recorded in the Bible. A study of the last words of Jesus is very interesting. You find His last Words recorded in the Gospels. If you go through the Gospels you will find that there are a total of seven statements that Jesus makes whilst on the cross before His death. The number 7 in Scripture signifies perfection or completion. The Seven Statements are found in the gospels of Matthew, Luke and John.

The King is Coming

Palm Sunday in the Christian Church is where we remember the fact that Jesus entered Jerusalem as King of Israel. The entry of Jesus into Jerusalem had been foretold by the Prophet Zechariah many years before. As Jesus rode into Jerusalem, He was given a royal welcome as they laid their garments and Palm branches down on the ground to welcome their Messiah King. Numbers of Jews in Jesus's day looked forward to a Golden Age where Israel would triumph over their enemies. Now Zechariah actually wrote of the First and Second coming of the Lord Jesus Zacharia looked far into the future and saw the Messiah that was to come in two aspects. He wanted God's people to look beyond their circumstances to a Savior Coming. Zechariah made a prophecy which looked into the future where he saw a King coming to Jerusalem some 500 years before it happened.

Jail House Joy

When Paul wrote his Philippian prison Epistle he mentioned the word joy 6 times and in the same letter to the Philippians he mentioned the word rejoice 10 times. For Paul the Jail House as tough as it was could become a Joy house with the Lord. Today the happiness of most people in the world today is dependant on their circumstances. If their circumstances are going well, then they have joy, if their circumstances are hard then they lose their joy. For the Spirit filled Scripture believing Christian, Christian joy can show others that we can be doing well even if we are not doing well in the world's eyes. Phil 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Joy for the Christian is built not on circumstances in our lives but in the confidence that we have in the God who rules over every circumstance in our lives. Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Believers can be doing well in the Lord even if they are not doing well in the World. The New Testament passage that we read from this morning was in Acts 16. In Acts 16 we find that Paul gets his Macedonian call. Now you may not get a special vision like Paul to be a missionary in Macedonia but we are all called to mission nevertheless. Acts 1:8 KJV But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Walk out that Church door today and you will actually meet people that have no understanding of who Jesus is.

Every human being will live for eternity. Each of us are made in the image of God and God is eternal and the moment that we are conceived we too become eternal beings. Human beings will never cease to exist either in Heaven or the Eternal Hell. God desires everyone to be saved and salvation is possible for those that trust in Jesus Christ for their salvation. Jesus went to the cross to pay for all our sins. For the Christian: 1. Our Place is in Heaven: 2. Our Peace is in Heaven: 3. Our Praises are in Heaven: 4. Our People are in Heaven: 5. Our Prizes Are in Heaven:

Cornelius the Centurion

In Acts 10 we see the Gospel comes to Cornelius and his household and they believe and are baptized. The Four things I want you to see in Acts Chapter 10 is that: Cornelius was a Regimental Man. Secondly Cornelius was: A Religious Man. Thirdly: Cornelius was a Receptive Man. Fourthly: Cornelius was a Regenerated Man. Amidst all, the Pagan influences of Rome here is a man, high up in the Ranks of the Roman Army who is a God Seeker. Cornelius gives generously to others, he also prays and he has an outstanding reputation amongst the Jews. yet he does not know Jesus. You know, all over the world and I believe all around Australia there are people that are God seekers, their religious but their not right with God. There are people that have good reputation, they pray, they are charitable but they are without Christ. When Paul wrote to the Romans, he wrote of His own people, the Jews. Rom 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. 2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. Religion does not make you right with God. Reputation does not make you right with God. Righteous acts of generosity do not make you right with God…You've got to have Redemption… Redemption that's only available through faith in Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 1 Paul writes about our redeemer the Lord Jesus Christ. Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Barnabas was a great encourager in the early church. Barnabas's real name was Joses (Acts 4.36). The apostles recognized that this man had such a ministry of encouragement that they nicknamed him Barnabas which means Son of Encouragement. What a blessing a ministry of encouragement is! Not only was Barnabas known for his encouragement, Barnabas was known for his generosity. I think a Barnabas ministry is possible for any believer, we can all be encouragers. 1. Barnabas was an encourager. 2. Barnabas gave physically to the need of others. 3. Thirdly Barnabas took Saul and brought him to the apostles Who might you encourage in ministry? Who might you encourage this week? Who are your Sauls, and your John/Mark's? Not only did Barnabas encourage individuals Barnabas encouraged Churches where God had him minister. We should all be building each other up. The Church needs encouragers, and we must beware of discouraging others!

Acts Chapter 9 is dominated by the story of Saul. There are three things I want you to see today in relation to Saul. Today we will see… The Character of Saul…The Conversion of Saul and Thirdly...The Commitment of Saul. Now in Acts Chapter 9, Luke records for us how Paul continues his ruthless campaign of persecuting Christians when God intervenes in His life: In Acts 9, Paul is travelling a journey of around 150 miles from Jerusalem to Damascus to bring back followers of Jesus to Jerusalem so that they could be imprisoned there. No Christian back then, would have ever had the concept that Saul would have become a follower of Jesus Christ. You know our God specializes in the impossible? God intervenes in impossible situations. What we think is impossible, God makes possible! Saul knew about Jesus, He persecuted the followers of Jesus. He lived around the same time as Jesus and some think that Saul may have even witnessed the death of Jesus. Saul's people the Jews had been promised a Messiah, someone that would deliver them from their sins and on the road to Damascus, Paul hears the Promised Messiah's voice who names Himself as Jesus, Jesus means Saviour. Saul had previously been putting his faith in his heritage, his works and his religious achievements for His right standing before God. He thought his religious would save him. From the day Saul who became Paul saw the light from Heaven and heard the voice of Jesus, he was committed to obey the will of God, no matter what the cost!

Discussions in the Desert

In Acts Chapter 8 God directs Philip to go to a desert road which went down from Jerusalem to Gaza in order that he might witness to a man from Ethiopia. The Ethiopian was a Eunuch. Eunuchs were often, castrated men who were in the servitude of Royal Households (Acts 8:26). Have you ever wondered why God sent an Angel to Philip to give him directions in order to meet the Ethiopian, rather than sending an Angel directly to give the Ethiopian the Gospel? The answer is simple. The Great Commission of the Gospel of Grace, has not been given to Angels, The Great Commission is given to the Church! Now, Philip obeyed God's directions and we find him running to meet the Ethiopian. This morning I want you to notice 4 things about the Ethiopian that Philip met in Acts Chapter 8. First of all; The Ethiopian was a RESPECTED MAN Verse 27. Secondly, The Ethiopian was a RELIGIOUS MAN Verses 27-28. Thirdly, The Ethiopian was a RECEPTIVE MAN Verses 31-38. Fourthly, The Ethiopian was a REJOICING MAN Verse 39. Thank God that Philip was a soul winner and obeyed the Lord and ran to meet the Ethiopian! Two things I cant do in Heaven! I will never be able to sin, which is great. But I will never be able to win souls. The time for forgiveness of your sins is now and the time to win souls is now!

Counterfeits in the Church

This morning as we look at Acts Chapter 8 I want to talk to on the subject of Counterfeits in the Church. Throughout the world there are people in Churches that are not real Christians, there actually Counterfeits in the pews. Simon had also made a great impact on Samaria with his magic. I want you to note that Simon previously practiced sorcery. Acts 8.9 He amazed the people of Samaria and they thought he was the great power of God. In the days of the early church there were counterfeiters in the Church and there are counterfeiters in the Church today. There are those in our day in religious circles that deceive people with the miraculous. Simon had been a deceiver. Philip was doing miracles and Simon was doing magic. Satan has always had his counterfeiters. Today there are multitudes of people throughout the world that claim that they believe in Jesus Christ and are even baptized. You can believe in Jesus Christ historically, you can believe in Jesus Christ factually but you may not believe in Jesus Christ spiritually. You can be baptized under the water but not be under the blood!

The Great Departure

Now when you read about the end of Elijah's ministry in 2 Kings 2 we see that Elijah had a miraculous departure in the air. What an Amazing Departure Elijah had? You know all of us are going to depart this world one day. There are two things that are certain in this world and that is death and taxes. Some of the big businessmen in the world work out ways to avoid their taxes but they can't avoid death. Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Our departure date from this world is in the hand of God. Now have you ever thought where Elijah went? I believe when Elijah left this world for the final time, Elijah went to Paradise. Now I'm not denying what the Bible says in 2 Kings 2.11 about Elijah going UP into HEAVEN. But…. did you know that there are 3 Heavens in the Bible? The First Heaven in the Bible is the earth's atmosphere where the birds fly and the clouds are: Job 35:10 The Second Heaven in the Bible is Outer Space: Psalm 8:3 Now there is a Third Heaven in the Bible, where God's Throne is and where Jesus is today: Heb 8:1 2 Cor 12:2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) 4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. Paul describes that he was caught up to the THIRD Heaven. Now I believe when Elijah left this world for the final time, He was caught up to the first Heaven. (John 3).

7 Suggestions for Sad Saints

Elijah became so fearful and he was in such despair that he ended up praying to the Lord, that he might die. You know sometimes God's people can get so depressed that they can even want to die: The Great Apostle Paul even despaired of his life at one stage. 2 Cor 1:8 For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: 9 But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: How did Elijah get over his depression and despair? In 1 Kings 19 there were Seven things that helped Elijah get over his despair! First of all, God gave Elijah REST (1 Kings 19.5-6) Secondly: God gave Elijah REFRESHMENTS: Elijah received Good Food and adequate water (1 Kings 19.6-7). 1 Cor 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. God gave Elijah good food and water which refreshed and nourished him. Thirdly: God gave Elijah RESILIANCE: (1 Kings 19:8) Fourthly: God gave Elijah a REVELATION: (1 Kings 19:11-12) Fifthly: Elijah was helped by God to get over his depression and despair because God gave Elijah a REASSIGNMENT (1 Kings 19:15-16) Sixthly: Elijah was helped by God to get over his depression and despair because in verse 16 also God gives Elijah a RECRUIT (1 Kings 19:16) Lastly: Elijah was helped by God to get over his depression and despair because in verse 17 God gives Elijah…REASSURANCE: Elijah was not on his own (1 Kings 19:18).

Where Are The Elijah's Today?

As we enter the New Year, I want to remind us of the importance of standing for the Lord in the Pagan World we live in today and we will do that by looking at the Prophet Elijah. A central character in 1 Kings 18 is the Prophet Elijah. Elijah lived at a time when God's people were in a Spiritual drought and a Physical Drought. In 1 Kings 18 we have a scene on Mount Carmel in the land of Israel. On Mount Carmel stood Elijah the lonely prophet who was addressing God's people. God's people, the Israelites had been caught up in idolatry and they began to worship false gods and Elijah calls them to make a choice. Elijah wanted the Israelites to make their decision, either to follow and serve the true God or to follow and serve Baal, the false god of the weather. Behind the false god Baal, was Satan and the Israelites had to choose between either the one true God or the false gods of Satan. It's the same today isn't it. Every person has to make a decision. We either choose to serve the one true God or the gods of our age. In Elijah's day there was a climate crisis in his country, a drought which lasted for 3.5 years and the drought was affecting the land of Israel. Now at the heart of Israel's climate crisis was the sin of the nation as well as the prayers of Elijah. Unfortunately, the Nation of Israel had been influenced by a corrupt King and Queen and their promotion of false gods and idols. The nation of Israel was called to be a witness but as a whole they were failing in their witness. As you look at Elijah's ministry you see how God prepares him over a number of years for the battle he would have Mount Carmel.

Running The Race in 2023

I like to begin each New Year with a New Year Sermon and so today my text is taken from Hebrews 12. In Hebrews 12 we can see that the writer compares the Christian life to a race that is being run. When a person becomes a Christian you start running in a race. Now I don't want you to think that if you win the race then your going to Heaven… now that's not right! We are in the race because we are going to Heaven! Salvation is never something you achieve because you've run well in this life. Salvation is a free gift of God given to the believing sinner who trusts Christ for salvation. Salvation is never given because of our performance. Salvation is given to us because of a price. A price was paid for my sin and your sin on the cross of Calvary by Jesus Christ. 2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Now the day your saved here on earth is the day that you begin a wonderful race, which will finish in Heaven. Previous to Hebrews Chapter 12 is Hebrews Chapter 11 and in Hebrews Chapter 11 the writer gave us a big list of God's champions who ran the race that God gave them.

As we get close to Christmas Day we will look at 1 John Chapter 4. Now John doesn't mention Bethlehem or the manger or the Angels or the Shepherds in his letter but he does mention the love of God and the Son of God that was sent into the world. There are four things that I want to speak about in relation to love. Firstly I want to speak about the Attribute of love. Secondly I want to speak about the Absence of love. Thirdly I want to speak about the Action of love. 1 John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Fourthly I want to speak about the Atonement of love. Fifthly I want to speak about the Announcement of love. The Angels announced God's love to some shepherds in that a Saviour from God had been born for all people.

Sermon Outline: Galatians 4 The Prophecies of Christ The Preparations for Christ The Privileges of Christ The Greatest Privilege as we remember the Uniqueness of Christmas is that there was a Saviour sent into the world who was God. Mankind is separated from God because of our sins. God did something about that. Way back in history God called out people to follow Him, the Jewish Nation. God gave His people a sacrificial system where their sins could be covered until Jesus came as God's Sacrificial lamb. Jesus Christ was born to die. He lived a perfect life. He showed the way to God and He was the way to God. (John 14:6 ) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Jesus Christ came to die for you. He died that you might be forgiven. He died that you might experience life. He died so that one day all those that have trusted Him will live in Eternity in Heaven, cleansed, blameless and forgiven. John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. Jesus Christ came to deal with our three biggest problems. Sin, Sorrow and Death

Stephen A Man of Faith

We are preaching through the Book of Acts at present and today I am going to speak about Stephen. Stephen was thought to be a Jew that had been converted to Christ and became the first Christian Martyr recorded in the Bible. We first meet Stephen in Acts Chapter 6. In Acts 6.3 we know that Stephen was a man that had a good reputation. From Acts Chapter 6 we also know that Stephen was a great help to the Apostles. Stephen was both a practical man in the Early Church as well as being a Spiritual man. Every Church needs people who are practical and spiritual! Now in Acts 6, The early Church was growing. The Church was not only meeting spiritual needs, but it was helping others with their practical needs. The Apostles could not do everything themselves and so they needed help. Stephen and 6 others were chosen to aid the Apostles in the growing work. Because of Stephen's practical help and the other 6 men that were chosen in the early Church the Word of God spread and the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem. In Stephen's day, Priests in Jerusalem were realizing that Christ had died for their sins and the sins of their people and there were no more sacrifices to offer. They were trusting Christ alone for the forgiveness of sins. Judaism in Jerusalem was being turned upside down as even many of the Priests were leaving their traditions behind and trusting Christ as their Saviour. In Acts 6 Stephen is falsely accused and is brought before a Jewish Council. In Acts 7 Stephen is brought before the Jewish Council and the High Priest and Stephen gives an overview of biblical history from Abraham to Christ.

Division in the Church

In Acts 6 there was a chance that Satan could use division to halt the growth of the Early Church. In Acts Chapter 6 there was the potential for DIVISION. Division of brothers and sisters in the Church is one of the biggest weapons that Satan uses today to destroy Churches. Now let me give you a Sermon outline for my message today from Acts 6: In Acts 6:1 We see THE PROBLEM. In Acts 6:2-3 We see THE PLAN. In Acts 6:4 We see THE PRIORITY. In Acts 6:7 We see THE PROGRESS.

Courage For Christ

In Australia we may not yet face physical opposition like many of our brothers and sisters in Christ, overseas; but I believe there is increased opposition happening now in many areas towards Christians and Christian values in our society. Today like never before in Australia, we are going to need courage to stand for Christ. Every faithful Christian is going to experience some type of Persecution. 2 Tim 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. Today if you are a godly disciple of Jesus and you want to win the lost then you can expect persecution. Right now, here in Australia, laws continue to be drawn up which will result in the persecution of Australian Christians. In many places throughout the World, if you stand for the truth…if you take a stand for righteousness then you will find that you become an object of attack. If you study the History of the Church you find persecution happening almost immediately after the Early Church began. Soon after Pentecost the believers in Jesus Christ were persecuted for their faith as seen in Acts Chapter 4. Believers today need to have visible boldness. Believers need to have vocal boldness today. Believers need to realize that Boldness is vital in today's world.

The Philadelphian Church had Openness. The Philadelphian Church had Opportunities. The Philadelphian Church had Oppositions. The Church at Philadelphia had Optimism. The Book of Revelation was written by the Apostle John. He was a prisoner of the Romans on the Island of Patmos because of his witness for Christ. In about 96 A.D. the Apostle John wrote down the book of Revelation. John was told to write down the Book of Revelation by the Lord Jesus and he was to send the book of Revelation to the 7 Churches in Asia Minor. John is about 92 years old and the year he wrote the book is thought to be around 96 AD. The Seven Churches in Asia Minor received the whole book of Revelation and in Revelation chapters 2-3 we read the contents of 7 letters directed specifically to the 7 churches. In Chapters 2-3 of Revelation Jesus describes the condition of the 7 churches at the time John wrote. Jesus Christ gave a description of the unique characteristics of each church. The condition of the 7 churches in Asia Minor also reflects a Prophetical picture of the history of the Church from its beginnings in the days of the Apostles till the end of the Church age. The Church age ceases to exist at the Rapture. If you look at the Church of Philadelphia it is a Church blessed by Jesus and it is a Church commended by Jesus. As a Pastor I want a Church that is both blessed by Jesus and commended by Jesus.

Pentecostal Power

In Acts Chapter 2 we read about the Day of Pentecost when the early believers were filled with the Holy Spirit. This sermon deals with the truth about tongues speaking seen at Pentecost. Traditionally for the Jews, Pentecost was a day of thanksgiving which marked the end of the grain harvest. Now in Acts 2 on the very day set aside for the Jews to praise God for a great Harvest, the Lord began to harvest lost souls by the Holy Spirit working through His people in the newly established Church. Prior to Pentecost God's major witness on earth was the Jewish Nation, now God's major witness on Earth was going to be the newly birthed, Spirit filled Church. The future ministry of the early disciples of Jesus had to be totally dependent on God. At Pentecost God was going to provide the Holy Spirit to give the Disciples His power and they had to wait from God's power to come from above. The Disciples spent time with Jesus after His resurrection, and they patiently waited for the promise of the Father which would give them supernatural power. When the Holy Spirit came an unseen Power entered Jerusalem and the unseen power entered the followers of Jesus. Historically for the early Disciples of Christ present at Pentecost in Jerusalem, the Baptism of the Spirit occurred for them on the day of Pentecost. For the believer, today the Baptism of the Spirit occurs the moment a person trusts Jesus Christ as Saviour. At the very moment of salvation, when a person first becomes a Christian, the Holy Spirit, comes and dwells within and we are spiritually baptised in our union with Christ; and the Church.

The Church Alive

When you see the beginnings of the Early Church in the Book of Acts, you see a Church Alive empowered by the Spirit of God and the Word of God. Now, I'm afraid today that there are numbers of Churches in Australia, that if you were to do a spiritual autopsy on them you would find out that they are dead. Their spiritual hearts have stopped and in some churches their spiritual heartbeat stopped years ago. There are dead Churches all around the world! Churches that are dead spiritually. People are still attending dead churches today but there is no spiritual life. Dead Churches don't preach the Gospel. Dead Churches have no concern for souls. Dead Churches are more concerned with formality rather than maturity. Dead Churches are captured by the Spirit of the Age rather than the Spirit of God! Sadly dead Churches promote sin rather than condemning sin. Dead Churches look inward rather than upward because they don't even look for the coming of the Lord Jesus at the Rapture! In the Book of Acts we see the Church alive. I believe that even today, some 2000 years later if we examine the Church alive in the Book of Acts, we will learn what makes the Church alive in 2022. I believe that if we would just take some basic principles that we see in the Book of Acts and apply them, then many Churches would begin to see revival and life amongst the people of God. There are four things that made the early Church alive in the Book of Acts. The Early Church was a Prayerful Church. The Early Church was a Powerful Church. The Early Church was a Preaching Church and The Early Church was a Personable Church.

The Book of Acts was written by Luke as was the Gospel of Luke. Luke was a Doctor and a fellow labourer with the Apostle Paul. Luke wrote his Gospel and the Book of Acts both to a man called Theophilus. Luke in his Gospel wanted Theophilus to know about the life, the death, the resurrection and the ascension of the Lord Jesus. When Luke wrote the Book of Acts he wanted to tell Theophilus about the beginnings and expansion of Christianity after Jesus had died. Just as Luke found a Theophilus in his life to instruct in the Lord, so should every Christian seek to disciple others whilst there is still time.

Contentment in a Chaotic World

This morning I would like to speak about "Contentment in a Chaotic World". The Holman Bible Dictionary gives a definition of Contentment: Contentment is: An internal satisfaction which does not demand changes in external circumstances. Today our world is in chaos in many places but I believe it is still possible to find Contentment in every circumstance if you are a believer in Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul was one who found contentment in every crisis. We live in a society now that continually fosters discontentment. The constant message that is beamed out through the TV is that you need to have more and more in order to be happy. The TV promotes dissatisfaction with what you have! God Himself brings contentment to our lives when we know Him and walk with Him. True contentment on this earth first begins by having a relationship with the God that made us. A relationship with the God that made us begins when we understand that Jesus Christ is our Creator and that He went to the cross as our Saviour dying on the cross for all our sins and rising again on the third day. When you acknowledge Jesus Christ as your Saviour then the road to real contentment begins! Contentment is not self-satisfaction! Contentment begins with a God Satisfaction! Paul's sufficiency was not in what he had or in what he did not have. His sufficiency was in Christ. Paul not only trusted Christ but Paul was empowered by Christ: In the good times and in the bad times, Paul could cope because it was Christ that strengthened him. One writer said referring to Phil 4:13: "When Paul said that he could do all things, he meant all things which were God's will for him to do.

Renovation & Restoration

Most Father's Days I like to speak about a Godly man in the Bible and the man I want to look at today is Nehemiah. Nehemiah was a cupbearer who became a Master Renovator in the City of Jerusalem renovating the broken-down walls. In Nehemiah Chapter 1 we find that God's people are in difficult circumstances and there is a need for a Renovation Rescue. The city of Jerusalem looked very tired in fact it was in a mess, the walls were broken down, the gates were burned with fire and the city streets were strewn with rubble. God calls Nehemiah to rebuild the walls.... He is the man that God uses to lead God's people in the reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem in just 52 days. In Nehemiah chapter 1 Nehemiah gets a call from God to go down to Jerusalem to repair the broken walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah is in the palace at Shushan. Shushan is in what is today western Iran. We live in a broken world. Right throughout the world God looks down and He sees broken Nations and broken cities and in those broken cities God sees broken lives. The entrances of our cities are wide open to the enemy as nations have moved away from God and His Word. Moral and Spiritual walls of the past have broken down. The need of the hour are men and women who like Nehemiah are concerned for the Glory of God and the good of others. Not only are our cities broken down but in many cases our churches are broken. Many Churches in Australia are like the Temple in Jerusalem, surrounded by the remnants of a once strong fortress, desperately needing the intervention of God, for protection and revival and restoration. The need of the hour are men and women who see and hear God's call!

Rejoice

The Book of Philippians is known as the Epistle of Joy and the word Rejoice is found 10 times in Paul's letter to the Philippians. Paul tells the Philippians in Phil 3, that they are to rejoice in the Lord. I think as Christians we really should be the most joyful people on earth. If you are walking with the Lord there should be a joy in your life. Both the Philippian Church and the Galatian Church were under the threat of Jewish legalists that were corrupting the purity of the Gospel. The Jewish legalists were in fact preaching another Gospel by adding the works of the Law to the Gospel. In context today, there are those in various religious systems that add to the Gospel. For instance, the Roman Catholic Church will teach that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins but they add works to the Gospel. When you become a Christian trusting in Christ's work on the cross for your sins, God declares you righteous. Your past sins have been FORGIVEN, your present sins have been FORGIVEN and your future sins have been FORGIVEN.

Worry, Prayer & Revival

In Philippians 4 Paul addresses the subject of worry. You know worry can actually be detrimental to your health and also can be a killer! Author James Gray states; "It may surprise many people that a thing like worry can be a killer. It has been proved by all medical researches that worry is a major cause of heart ailments, raised blood pressure, rheumatism, ulcers, skin–problems, asthma and many other diseases. Worry is a slow poison… " Pastor Adrian Rogers said: "Worry is a wound in the heart of God. Worry is an insult to God. Worry has you living like a Pagan, thinking like the world, not someone who has a Heavenly Father". In the Book of Philippians Paul wants the Philippian Christians to live like Heavenly Citizens. Citizens of Heaven don't have to live just like the Citizens of earth who have no god. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you can take all your cares and all your worries to the Lord! When Paul says be anxious for nothing it doesn't mean believers in Christ won't have concerns. God's people can have great concerns but it is wrong for God's people to turn their concerns into worry! Paul wants the Philippians to be prayerful and thankful which will make them peaceful and useful in their church and in their community.

In the 1960's European movie producers started filming Western Cowboy movies. Foreign critics called the Movies that they produced; "Spaghetti Westerns" because they were produced in Europe mainly by Italian Film Directors. One of the most famous Spaghetti Westerns was produced in 1966 and it starred Clint Eastwood and the title of the film was called "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly". Now if someone made a movie based on the Apostle Paul's life prior to his conversion then; "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" would be a great title. The bad man Saul ended up becoming the beautiful man Paul after he met Jesus face to face. Paul had to let go of the guilt of the past and press onwards with all that Jesus had for him.

When Paul became a follower of Christ, He lost a lot in this world. Paul lost his reputation and his respect amongst many in Jewish circles, and he lost his freedom in his times of imprisonment. In Phil 3.8 Paul knows that God's Son is the Christ....God's anointed one...Or Messiah from the Hebrew word. Paul knows God's Son as JESUS .... Jesus means: saviour Paul knows God's Son as MY LORD.... Paul knew that Jesus was God! Like Paul, prior to his conversion, there are so many people in our society today that think they're going to Heaven because of what they have done and they neglect what Christ has done. Paul came to the point where he had had no confidence in his family heritage or his brilliance or his achievements or in the keeping of the Law for his salvation. Paul knew that a right standing before God only came by placing his faith in Christ. Righteousness was the great goal of Paul's life when he was a Pharisee, but he found out that he could never achieve a right standing before God in himself or his religious activities. When Paul met Christ he came to the understanding that despite all his religious achievements, he was actually spiritually bankrupt before God. When Paul became a Christian he lost his own self-righteousness and discovered that Christ's righteousness was given to him as a free gift. If Paul dwelt on his past history he would have had a lot to be sad about. Previously Paul was a self-righteous religious man that had rejected Christ. Paul had been someone that had persecuted the Church intensely. Paul was present at the death of Stephen, not only present but he was consenting to the death of Stephen in Acts 7.

No one is saved by works but God wants every believer to work out the salvation that they already possess. Salvation was purchased for us on the cross of Calvary when Christ died for our sins. There is much hard work to do if a Christian wants to live their lives effectively for God's glory and as a witness before others. Every Christian should be a light in this crooked and perverse world as they seek to serve the Lord whilst they live here on earth.

Work-Out

In Philippians 2.12 Paul instructs the Philippian Christians to Work-Out. Paul wants the Philippians to work-out their own salvation. Good works do not bring us salvation nor do they help us maintain our salvation. Salvation is all of Christ! All I have to do to be saved is to believe that Jesus Christ died in the cross, paying the penalty of all my sins. We are not saved by Good works but we are created for Good Works. Eph 2.10 If you're a Christian God has prepared good works for you to do after your saved. Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. The Philippians had to work out the salvation that they already possessed. When I go to the Gym, I go there to work out the muscles that I already possess. It is good for me when I'm at the Gym to do some Cardio exercises. Cardio exercises are good for the heart muscles. I don't go to the Gym to get a heart. I go to the Gym to exercise the heart I already possess. Paul wanted the Philippians to work-out the salvation that they already possessed when they trusted Christ. We know that when Paul wrote to the Philippians, that they were already believers in Christ. They already had salvation.

To Live Is Christ

When Paul writes to the Church at Philippi it is believed that he was a writing from the city of Rome where he was a prisoner. This morning as we examine Philippians 1 I want to ask you a question. What are you living for? What dominates your life? Paul said in: Phil 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If we examine ourselves, could you and I honestly say that: Phil 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. What would many people say? For me to live is: My job. For me to live is… My music. For me to live is… my children For me to live is… my grandchildren. For me to live is… my sport. For me to live is… my hobby. Paul knew that to stay here on earth was to live for Christ…that was Paul's whole reason for being alive on earth. From when Paul was converted and up until the day he died his life was devoted to Christ in order to bring glory to his Saviour. Every move Paul made in his life as a Christian was to advance the knowledge of the Gospel and was to build up Christ's Church on earth but Paul also knew that to die was to gain. To die is to gain for all those that have trusted in Christ: Death for the Christian is merely our graduation to Glory! Paul knew that the Philippian Church would be better off if he stayed on earth rather than if he went to Heaven. Paul's presence on earth meant that the Philippians would progress in the faith.

In Philippians 1.8 we see that Paul had a love for the Philippian Christians. As he writes to them as a prisoner it is now some 12 years later after he had established the Church there and 12 years later Paul is still concerned for them enough to write to them and to pray for them. Here's a question? Do you still have a concern for fellow believers that you may have ministered with in other churches in the past? Are there some Christians from the past that you are still in touch with? I know we cant be in touch with everyone from our past churches but there are some you can still encourage. Are their some believers in other churches that you can still encourage and write to? If you don't have a love for your brothers and sisters in Christ then there is something wrong! Do you know in this Church that this Church Family might be the only type of family left for some believers here? The love that the Philippians showed had to be in knowledge and in discernment. This is real important in the days that we live in. The church today must show love in knowledge and discernment. One writer wrote this about discernment: "It means to distinguish, to separate out by diligent search, to examine. Discernment is the ability to properly discriminate or make determinations. It is related to wisdom.. A discerning mind demonstrates wisdom and insight that go beyond what is seen and heard". The love that the Philippians showed within their congregation and without their congregation had to be in knowledge and discernment. The Christian church today like never before needs to show love in knowledge and discernment:

Paul had fond memories of Phillipi. Paul originally went to Phillipi because of a vision that he had of a man from Macedonia calling him to mission. We see this in Acts 16. When Paul responded to the call it is believed that this was the first time the Gospel was taken to Europe. Paul got a mission call in an unusual way.. and not all of us get a Macedonian call like Paul but we are all called to mission in some way. Paul was on mission wherever he was and if you're a Christian then you and I have got to realize that we have a call to mission as well. We are called to be missionaries for the Lord, either here at home or overseas. It was in Philippi that Paul gained his very first convert to Christianity in Europe. The first convert was a woman called Lydia. It was also in Philippi where Paul and Silas were imprisoned with God miraculously intervening to get them released. The Book of Philippians should be a great encouragement to us all because Philippians is known as the Epistle of Joy! Paul addresses the Christians at Phillipi as saints. God considers every believer in Jesus Christ to be a saint! The Saints that Paul was writing to in the book of Philippians weren't dead people in Heaven, they were live people on earth. The Word "Saint or Saints" comes from the Greek word "HAGIOS" The Meaning of hagios is consecrated to God, holy, sacred. In the Old Testament the Lord had certain vessels in the Temple that were set apart for the worship of God.

: When Paul writes to the Church at Philippi it is believed that he was a prisoner of Rome. Paul had fond memories of Philippi. You will remember that Paul went to Philippi because of a vision that he had of a man from Macedonia calling him to mission. We see this in Acts 16. When Paul responded to the call it is believed that this was the first time the Gospel was taken to Europe. Paul's call to mission in Macedonia was a call that brought him both joy and pain as well. Our call to mission is the same. There is great joy in serving the Lord but there also can be great trials, but we are not alone. Christ is with us. In the introduction to his letter Paul states that both he and Timothy are bondservants of Jesus Christ. Bond Servants comes from the Greek Word (Doulos) A Doulos was a slave and Doulos could mean a person who was a slave either in a voluntary sense or in an involuntary sense. A doulos was a person in subjection to another. In the Old Testament there were slaves amongst the Hebrew people and some of the slaves, either male or female, would actually choose to serve their Masters forever. If a slave chose to stay with the Master, then the master would pierce the slaves earlobe by bringing them to the door of the house and their ear would be pierced with the sharp object called an awl against the door. This action showed that the slave was permanently attached to his or her master's household. It became traditional to put a gold ring in the ear that was pierced. That slave who chose to be a bondservant to the Master could never go free again nor be sold again by their master. Jesus Christ was a model servant when He came to this earth.

Six Reasons For Sad Saints

Philippians is in the New Testament, and it is a letter written by Paul the Apostle. Philippians is one of Paul's Prison Epistles and it is known by people as the Epistle of Joy. Paul mentions JOY six times in this letter. Paul is a Prisoner of Rome yet he can encourage others to rejoice and to have joy. How could Paul have joy as a Prisoner? Well, Paul could have Joy as a prisoner and Paul could rejoice as a prisoner because his joy and happiness did not depend on his circumstances. Paul's joy was found in Jesus who is God over every circumstance. Paul's happiness is far different than the non-Christian's happiness. The World looks for joy and happiness in all the wrong places and they miss out on the fact that true Joy is found in an abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. The World at large experiences happiness because of circumstances. If Circumstances are right in the world, then happiness flows for many people, because happiness is dependent on circumstances for many. Not so for the Christian, our Joy is meant to be found in Jesus, not in what's happening to us. Our world can be caving in as a believer, but we can still have joy. Joy is found in Jesus despite our circumstances. One ancient theologian said "The Christian should be an alleluia from head to foot." Now as I mentioned Philippians is called the Epistle of Joy. Paul knew how to have joy in terrible circumstances and it brought Paul great Joy to bring the Gospel to the Philippians at Philippi. Philippi was a Roman Colony in North Eastern Greece in Macedonia and it is the place where the Lord called Paul to through a dream.

Two Mummies In Egypt

My sermon has a rather unusual Title it is called "Two Mummies in Egypt." Moses had two mums in Egypt, his birth mother and his adoptive Mother. Moses was born in a normal Jewish family with a mum and a dad down in Egypt and at the time he was born, the nation of Israel was in slavery under Pharaoh but Moses gets adopted by Pharaoh's daughter and is raised in the Egyptian Palace. One mum had faith and the other mum had a fortune being the daughter of Pharaoh. Moses's maternal mum, Jochebed was the mum that gave birth to him. Moses's Egyptian mum was the one that gave protection to Him. We don't know the name of Moses's adopted mother. Moses who wrote Exodus doesn't give us her name. Moses really was fortunate to have both women in his life. We don't know if Moses's Egyptian mother ever came to faith but we do know that God used her. Are you thankful for the women that God has placed in your life? I hope you are. You know God uses both women of faith and God also uses women that are faithful in our lives and some of those faithful women may not be believers in Jesus Christ. In God's providence He brings women of influence into our lives both believers and nonbelievers. The Bible is a book that honors women and the Bible informs us of the stories of Women that made a difference in their day. Today like never before, in this day and age we need both FAITHFUL WOMEN and FAITH-FILLED WOMEN. We especially need FAITH -FILLED WOMEN, both married and single. A woman of faith can pass on a great heritage to children of all ages.

A Revelation On The Road

In Luke 24.13 we find two followers of Jesus walking away from Jerusalem on Resurrection Sunday to a place called Emmaus which was 7 miles from Jerusalem. A STRANGER comes beside them who was the most important person in the world and they did not recognize Him. It is easy to be short sighted it is easy not to recognise an idea or even a person that might change the world. John 1:10 KJV He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. Jesus Christ, the one who was infinite value was not recognised by the majority of His own people as their Messiah. In Luke 23 .13 we find two followers of Jesus walking away from Jerusalem on the first Ressurection Sunday to a place called Emmaus. A STRANGER comes beside them who was the most important person in the world and they did not recognise Him. Jesus....the Risen Lord ...appeared to two of His subjects walking on a dusty Road.....His appearance was totally unexpected by them. As they walked on that dusty road they had hearts that were burdened, Jesus, the one that they followed had been condemned to death and crucified…and they had hoped that He would redeem Israel, but now he was gone. Their hopes and dreams were shattered as they felt the loss of the one that they loved. They were discouraged and despondent after the events surrounding the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. If you are a disciple of Jesus then what road are you walking on today? Are you walking a road today with a heart burdened?

ANZAC Memorial Sermon

ANZAC day has become a day in Australia where we remember the sacrifice of all Australians who have given their lives in military operations around the world. Our nation can recapture some of the Anzac Spirit if we remember the Words of Nehemiah in Nehemiah 4:14 as he encouraged his people in the face of the enemy. Obedience to the Word of God would be the key to the Nation's success both nationally and militarily. I believe it is the same today! Nations may have mighty victories against other nations but if any victorious Nation forgets their Creator then that nation will experience inevitable defeat. Ps 33:8 Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. Psalm 33.12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. The story of Nehemiah is a great story. In Nehemiah's own life we can see principles for victory in Nehemiah's life and the life of a Nation. I wish every politician would read Nehemiah's story. Nehemiah worked in Government circles, he was a Public Servant in Persia but he was a Public servant with a difference, God had first place in His life. There are five things in this message that we can learn from the life of Nehemiah. Nehemiah was: A DISTURBED MAN. Nehemiah was A DETERMINED MAN: Nehemiah was A DIRECTED MAN: Nehemiah was A DESPISED MAN: Nehemiah was A DEFENSIVE MAN: Nehemiah was a Disturbed man at the state of his beloved Nation. Christians are you disturbed by the state of our Nation? I am! Nehemiah got bad news about the state of his Nation. and he was disturbed about the state of his nation.

Resurrection Realities

This morning I want to talk to you about four things in relation to Easter. The four things I want to speak about are: 1. THE PRICE OF EASTER 2. THE POWER OF EASTER 3. THE PROMISE OF EASTER & 4. THE PRIORITY OF EASTER. How sad it is whilst people spend an enormous amount for Easter that they neglect the historical figure of Easter, Jesus Christ. An Unknown Author writing on the Uniqueness of Jesus said: His birth was contrary to the Laws of Life. His death was contrary to the laws of death. He had no cornfields or fisheries but He could spread a table for 5000. He walked on no beautiful carpets or velvet rugs, but He walked on the waters of the sea of Galilee and they supported Him... Three years He preached His gospel. He wrote no book, built no church house, had no monetary backing....He is the central character of human history, the pivot around which the events of the ages revolve and the only re generator of the human race. At Easter we remember the Resurrection of Jesus Christ but before His resurrection there was a terrible price to be paid. Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins and the sins of the entire world on the cross of Calvary. No one goes to Heaven unless they accept that Jesus Christ paid the redemption price for their sins. Jesus Christ promised us a resurrection to Heaven if we would trust in Him.

One of the men, John Jacob Astor had all the riches the world could offer and the other man, John Harper had all the riches Heaven could offer. This message is a challenge both to the saved and the lost in our world that is sinking in sin.

Decisions, Good Friday 2022

As you know today on Good Friday the Christian Church will gather World-Wide to remember the death of Jesus Christ over 2000 years ago. All around the world people will make decisions about Jesus today. Here in our city of Newcastle people will decide today to either worship Jesus or just ignore Jesus. As we think about the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ on this Good Friday we find that as you read the Bible people made decisions about Jesus that affected their lives and the lives of others. Judas in the Bible made a decision to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. There were Jewish leaders that made a decision in regards to Jesus and they chose to tell lies about Jesus in order to kill Jesus. There was the Jewish High Priest, Caiaphas he had to make a decision about Jesus. When Jesus was arrested and bought before Caiaphas there were people that made a decision that Jesus should die. Others made a decision to spit on Jesus and others made a decision to physically assault the Lord Jesus. Pilate thought that he would release Jesus but the pressure of the crowd forced Pilate to make an unexpected decision. Pilate released a man called Barabbas instead. The Unexpected decision allowed a rebellious murderer to go free. I wonder how Barabbas felt when that decision was made in his favor to set him free. That day an innocent man, Jesus Christ… took the place of a guilty man, Barabbas. Jesus Christ made a SUBSTITIONARY SACRIFICE for ALL of us whom are guilty. There are 2 types of people in the World those that receive Christ and those that reject Christ.

Gospel Tracts & Evangelism

Gospel tracts have a special place in my life as I came to know Jesus Christ as my Saviour as a young man when a lady shared a Gospel tract with me in Sydney after a Church service. I think Gospel tracts are a great way to reach people for the Lord and it is something that everyone here can easily do to fulfill the Great Commission that each of us are called to. The Lord calls His followers to be Ambassadors, He calls them to be Witnesses and He calls them to be Fishers of Men. 2 Cor 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ.. In Acts 1.8 Jesus called His followers then to have a world-wide witness for the Gospel: Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. In Matthew 4 Jesus called His Disciples (Peter and Andrew) to be Fisher's of Men! Matt 4:19 …Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. I believe that Gospel tracts provide an effective way for us to be Ambassadors and Witnesses and Fishers of Men! DL Moody was determined to speak to at least one person per day about their salvation. Tracts can easily make this possible. Gal 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 2 Cor 9:6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

Every person that has ever lived will one day stand before God. The Christian will stand before the Lord at The Judgement Seat of Christ so each of us should be mindful of our service to Him. We will all give an account of our lives as believers. 2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body.... Bill Newman challenges the believer to remember to be faithful to the Lord and not to waste our days.

Treasures in Heaven

Jesus knew that many people are tempted to lay up treasures on earth. In 1973 a businessman named Howard Dayton began doing a study in the Bible and he categorized all of the Scriptures that talk about money and possessions. Howard found that there were 2350 verses in the Bible about money and our use of it. We live in a society where we all use money. Money was even used in Jesus's day. It is good for us all here to be mindful of money and working for it. All of us here should have a theology of work and an understanding of the wise use of money. Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden to work and worship. Adam and Eve prior to sin entering this world were created by God to work. I believe we should make wise investments here on earth and for Heaven! The Bible shows us people that were wise investors on earth. Abraham was a wise investor, Gen 13:2 And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. Job was a wise investor and he was faithful to God both in prosperity and adversity. According to Jesus… it is possible to lay-up treasures in Heaven! There is a difference between earthly treasures and Heavenly Treasures. Earthly Treasures are corruptible and Heavenly Treasures are incorruptible. If you go through the whole Bible you will find that God uses everyday people with everyday talents in everyday circumstances for His glory. God uses both rich and poor people and healthy and sick people for His glory.

Treasures On Earth

God knows that mankind will search for treasures. If you gaze over the history of humanity there has always been treasure hunters. Men have risked their lives and have gone into the thickest of jungles and sailed on the stormiest seas and plunged into the deepest depths of the oceans to find hidden treasures. Did you know that when the Bible speaks of treasure it is not always speaking of tangible money or gold or finances? Do you know that the Bible describes people as a Treasure? The Nation of Israel is described as a Treasure in the Bible (Psalm 135:3) Did you know that Godliness brings true value/ true treasures? A truly Rich man or women in God's eyes is a Godly man or women! Godliness brings contentment and Godliness with contentment is great gain! 1 Tim 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. Everyone needs to see the difference between needs and wants. The Ungodly desire of the Godly to be rich can bring many problems! 1 Tim 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. There is Treasures in Heaven yet for us to earn! You know it would be very sad to finish you life on earth and be rich… but not rich towards God or others. Many a rich man has finished this earth and have not entered eternal riches. A rich man is a poor man if he has no everlasting treasures.

The Great Tribulation

The world is increasingly becoming unstable. We know that the nation of Ukraine was invaded by Russia and many people have been killed. We are now living in very dangerous times and there are those that think we could even be on the precipice of WWIII. The invasion of Ukraine is the biggest European conflict since WWII. Until Jesus returns to bring peace on the earth there will be an increase of wars in the world and instability across the nations. If you read Matthew 24 you will read what Jesus says will happen in a period soon to come called the "Great Tribulation". The Great Tribulation is also called the "Time of Jacob's Trouble" in the bible." Old Testament prophets have foretold that the Jews would one day return to their homeland that was promised to their forefathers. When you study the Bible and history we know that God has allowed the Jews to be exiled from their land and scattered around the world. The Lord Jesus in His day predicted the future destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem (Mark 13.2) and the scattering of the Jews to all nations (Luke 21). When the Church is gone as God's witness, then a period known as the Tribulation Period begins and the Nation of Israel becomes a witness once again for the Lord! The Tribulation Period begins 7 years before Jesus returns to earth at His Second Coming. At the Rapture of the Church Jesus comes for His people to take them to Heaven! At the Second Coming Jesus comes with His people to bring them to earth! We are to be looking for His Coming, We are to be learning of His Coming, we are to be longing for His Coming and we are to be living for His Coming.

Lights In The World (Matt 5)

Whilst ever Jesus was on earth He was God's visible light in this world. Jesus Christ was God's light manifested in human flesh. When Jesus left this earth, His light would be manifested in and through the Church. What a responsibility we have? If you are a believer in Jesus Christ you today, you, this week, you this month, you this year, are to be a light in this world. Matt 5:14 KJV Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Cities in Jesus's day were often built on a hill. If you go to Bethlehem its in the Judean Hills. If you go to Nazareth its on a hill. If you go to Golan, its on a hill, the Golan Heights. These cities could be seen easily of a night by their lights. The six cities of refuge in Israel were also located on hills and again could be seen from a great distance, in the dark, by their lights and by their night watch fires. If you accidentally killed a person you could flee to a City of Refuge for protection. Just as those cities stood out in the darkness in Jesus's day, we as believers have got to stand out in our world today! Matt 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. This world is in darkness and it needs God's lights in the church to be shining brightly!

Salt of the Earth

In the Beatitudes, Jesus shows us the qualities that should be present in every child of God. In Matthew Chapter 5 from verse 13 Jesus teaches His followers that they are to be salt and light. Matt 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. When Jesus says to His followers that they are salt He is indicating that they are very valuable, as well as necessary in this world. Salt creates thirst: If you live a life for Christ in your community or in your school or in your workplace then it is possible, to create a thirst in others to know God. It is a powerful witness when people see the joy and peace that Christ gives to the life of the Christian. Salt brings healing: Lives are rescued from disaster, burdens can be lifted, sorrows can be eased and souls can be restored from spiritual disaster when God works through His people as the salt of the earth, to bring healing and hope. Salt Irritates: When you rub salt on a wound it can irritate. The Apostle Paul was Salt in His World and in the places where Paul preached he caused both revivals and riots. When the salt of the Gospel is applied to the wounds of a spiritually decaying world it can have an irritating effect upon the unsaved. You and I as believers in Jesus Christ must make contact with those unsaved in this decaying world in order to have a preserving effect.

The Persecuted

The Beatitudes: After Jesus talks about the Characteristics of the people of God in Matt 5 Jesus talks about the Persecution of the people of God. Matt 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. If you live a Godly life today….you will be a target for ungodly attacks! 2 Tim 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. There is a major attack on the beliefs and even the history of Western Nations in order to rid Christianity from their shores. The major attack on the Western Nations began when they accepted and began to teach Evolution in the schools, universities and even in the Churches. 1 Tim 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: If you are a believer standing for Jesus and if you are engaged in the battle for souls then the Devil's agents will persecute you, they will slander you, they will mock you, they will lie about you and they might even kill you. 1 Peter 4.16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

In Matthew Chapter 5 The Beatitudes describe the characteristics of people who are in God's Kingdom. Matt 5.5 Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. God's people throughout the ages have displayed meekness. Meekness is not weakness. Meekness is seen as strength under control. Moses was the meekest man in all the earth. yet he was a brave man. It took time for God to develop Moses's character of meekness.

Poverty of Spirit

The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus's most famous sermon and the longest sermon recorded in the New Testament from Jesus's ministry years on earth. The Lord Jesus was an incredible teacher because every single word He said, came from Divine lips. John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. Jesus was God and when Jesus was teaching the people God was teaching the people… with power. At the end of the Sermon on the Mount Matthew states this: Matt 7:28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: 29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. It is believed that the Sermon on the Mount was delivered from a Mountain in Northern Israel. The first part of the Sermon on the Mount is called The Beatitudes. In the Beatitudes, Jesus shows us the qualities that should be present in every child of God. Nine times in Matthew 5 from vs 3-11 we find the word BLESSED. The Word Blessed here in English in our New Testaments can be translated as happy. The Blueprint for happiness is: "Not what a man or woman has but rather what a man or woman is". Godly character brings Godly Happiness. Your happiness as a believer is dependent largely on your response and obedience to the Word of God. Obedience to the Lord brings happiness, disobedience in the believer's life, brings distress and sadness. And happiness is possible in a Godly believer's life, even if they are in difficult circumstances. Jesus said: Matt 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

2022 A New Start

Usually in early January, most years I like to give a New Year's Sermon. This is my first opportunity to do this now in 2022 and I hope this message will be helpful to you as we start off the New Year. A lot of people in Australia make New Years resolutions at the start of each year. A new Year is a good place to make a new start. Someone said: "A new year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other". You may not be into New Years Resolutions, but I do think it is good to set goals for the year. Now there was a young man in history that set specific goals for his life. His name was Jonathan Edwards. Jonathan Edwards became an American Pastor and missionary in the 1700's. You might have heard of his most famous sermon. "It was called Sinners in the hands of an angry God." As a Teenager Johnathan Edwards made 70 Godly Resolutions for his life. He also made a resolution to re read his 70 resolutions at least once a week. Now did you know that there were people in the Bible that set goals. Joshua in the Old Testament set goals for serving the Lord. Joshua was determined that He and His Household would serve the Lord. Josh 24:15 … choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Daniel as a young man set goals for Godliness. He made sure that he did not compromise with the World. (Daniel Chaps 1 & 6)

In Luke chapter 1 Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel and Gabriel informed her that she would give birth to the Lord Jesus. After the announcement of the birth of Jesus Mary goes and visits her cousin Elizabeth. When Mary visits Elizabeth she praises God for his grace and the great things he has done. Mary is just a teenager when she received the news that she was going to give birth to Jesus. Mary wanted to magnify the Lord, she wanted to lift his name up, because she knew that he alone was a Saviour. Mary's song in Luke 1 was a: 1. A Song about the Grace of God vs 46 – 48 2. A Song about the Greatness of God vs 49 – 52 3. A Song about the Goodness of God vs 53 – 55 Mary Magnified the Lord as Savior in her words and in her life and so should we.

The Humanity & Deity of Jesus

Isaiah 9 speaks of the humanity and deity of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was fully man and fully God. Jesus experienced what it was like to be a human in every aspect but without sin. Jesus experienced a human birth through Mary's womb. Jesus knew what it was like to grow up as a child. Jesus knew what it was like to learn a trade and to work with his hands to make a living. Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. Jesus knew what it was like to have brothers and sisters and to grow up in a family. Jesus knew what it was like to suffer. He suffered emotionally. He suffered physically. Jesus suffered hunger. He suffered temptation. He was misunderstood. He suffered grief. He suffered abuse. He suffered betrayal. He suffered agony. He suffered death on the cross for our sins. Phil 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. The Maker of the earth came to the Manger on earth… some 2000 years ago. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. The Lord Jesus Christ manifested the invisible God on earth. When people saw Jesus people saw God.

The Fear of the Lord

Prov 1.7 talks about the FEAR of the Lord . Prov 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. There is an absence of the fear of God today. Jesus said: Matt 10. 28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Pro 10. 27 The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. The Fear of God can bring many blessings: For the unbeliever the fear of God is a fear of God's Judgement. Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. It is a good thing if unbelievers have a sense of God's Judgement and if they know the reality of an eternal Hell. Jesus said: Matt 10. 28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Every single person that has ever lived will receive a resurrection body and there are only two destinations after this life. People will either experience the joys of Heaven or the horrors of an eternity in Hell. Dan 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. There will be people that will receive a resurrection body and they will be cast into the Lake of Fire…the eternal Hell forever, they are the lost. …And on the other hand there will be people that receive a Resurrection Body that will live with Jesus for all eternity and they are the saved. Each of us here will either leave this earth as either saved or lost….

Today the world is being bombarded with worldly philosophies and deceptions that are not of God. The Apostle Paul wrote in Colossians 2.8; "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ". With all the deceptions that surround us today, the Word of God must be our guide and our comfort. Paul's letter to the Colossians warns us and gives us hope as we navigate the choppy waters of a world in deep trouble.

It is good to be reminded of the history of the Christian Church and the people that God used in the past who had a great influence on the Church and the World. We owe a lot to people who were called the Reformers as many of them risked their lives and even lost their lives in standing for the truth. Reformers were people that resisted the unbiblical practices of the Roman Catholic Church. Catholicism presents itself to the world as being the only true Church yet it is a cleaver counterfeit incorporating elements from ancient Babylonian worship as well as Christianity and Judaism. One of the most famous Reformers of the 1500's was Martin Luther. Luther was a Catholic Priest who was deeply concerned in regard to the corruption of his own Church. Reformation Sunday is held on the last Sunday in October because on October 31st 1517 Martin Luther nailed an important document called his (95 Theses) to the door of a Church in Wittenberg in Germany. The Reformers had a great impact in exposing unbiblical errors but warnings against false doctrines happened well before the Reformers even existed. The Lord Jesus warned of false prophets! Matt 7:15 KJV Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Paul warned of false teachers entering the Church and he warned of false teachers that would arise from within the Church. Acts 20:29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

Nehemiah was called of God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. He saw the need and responded to the work of God. Today cities around the world are in ruins, ruined financially, ruined morally and ruined spiritually and like never before we need Nehemiah's to be involved in the work of God.

Daniel: No Compromise

This morning we come to Daniel 6 which is perhaps one of the most famous Sunday School passages that has been taught to many children throughout the world. In Daniel 6 we find Daniel cast into a Lion's Den. In Daniel Chapter 6 Daniel is serving the government of the Medes and Persians when a plan is hatched to remove Daniel. Daniel would not compromise his faith or his testimony even if it meant death for him. Because Daniel defies the new law he is then cast into the den of Lions. In Daniel we see godliness, thankfulness, prayer fullness, courage, conviction, concern, bravery, wisdom, discernment, submission and love for his enemies. Daniel's testimony and words show us a man that knew God's character in an intimate way, and we find that an abiding trust in the Lord was displayed in numerous ways throughout his life. Do you have a great testimony? Do you demonstrate godliness in this Babylonian world?

In Daniel 5 we meet a King whose name was Belshazzar. He lived in the great city of Babylon a city that had been built up by King Nebuchadnezzar. King Nebuchadnezzar had died some 23 years before and now according to history it is believed that, Belshazzar is a co-ruler with his father Nabonidus. The city of Babylon was known for the its gold. Belshazzar had great riches at his disposal and in Daniel chapter 5 he decides to throw a party. At this time in the life of Belshazzar there is an enemy. The armies of the Medes and Persians are outside the city of Babylon, but why should the army of the Medes and Persians worry him? After all this King is living in a city that was surrounded by great high walls. The walls were over 350 feet high (over 106m) with 100 gates made of brass in the wall. The city had 250 watchtowers and it was completely surrounded by a Mote which was fed by the Euphrates River. The river Euphrates also ran through the city. There was an endless supply of water and historians tell us that the city had enough food stored up within its walls to last 20 years. What army could possibly be a threat to a city such as Babylon? In chapter 5 at Belshazzar's great feast he commits idolatry and causes others to commit idolatry on a massive scale. The Bible says that Belshazzar had invited a thousand Lords to his party. An uninvited guest brings a message that terrifies Belshazzar. The invitation had gone out to 1000 lords, but be had never invited the Lord into his life. The hand of the Lord wrote an inscription on the wall.

Nebuchadnezzar was a proud man: The bible says that .."God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." (James 4:6). Nebuchadnezzar was the most feared ruler of his day unrivaled in military might. God was the one that enabled Nebuchadnezzar to have such power. Jer 43:10 KJV …Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that I have hid; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them. Nebuchadnezzar came to know that God raises up rulers and God disposes of rulers. In Daniel Chapter 4 Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that made him afraid. As a result of the dream Nebuchadnezzar brings all his wisemen in to interpret his dream but not one of them could interpret his dream except for Daniel. God was warning Nebuchadnezzar in his dream which Daniel interpreted. Dan 4.27 KJV Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquility. Nebuchadnezzar, the proud King, did not heed God's warning and therefore God brought him to a very low point in his life. God can humble both Christians and non-Christians in their sins of pride. 2 Peter 3:9 KJV The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Nebuchadnezzar became like an animal in the fields for 7 years. Nebuchadnezzar's life is a lesson to the WHOLE world. Nebuchadnezzar was fortunate in that God humbled him.

In the Book of Daniel we discover that Nebuchadnezzar invaded Judah and took away thousands of captives back to Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar builds a giant golden image, and he invites all his officials to come to the dedication of the image that he had set up. Not only were his officials invited to come and see the image but the people in Nebuchadnezzar's Kingdom were to bow before it and even worship it. In Daniel 3 the faithfulness of Shadrach Meshach and Abendigo to God brought the attention of the enemy. They would not bow down to the idol of the day. The lives of the three Hebrew young men were now at great risk. There are still Nebuchadnezzar's demanding people worship of that which is not God. Now Shadrach Meshach and the Abed-nego were public servants of the King in high positions. But when the King's law crossed God's law they would not obey. I think one of the greatest needs of our generation is men and women that will stand for God's word despite the opposition. We need men and women whose lives are governed by the scriptures and who will not compromise when an opportunity to do so comes their way.

The King's Nightmare

When the book of Daniel opens up in the first chapter we find that Daniel is alive during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel and his three friends find themselves amongst many others from Judah, in a foreign land, with foreign gods with a foreign language. The Bible tells us that Daniel was taken for the service of the King. Nebuchadnezzar had Daniel and his friends and other Hebrews trained for three years in the education of Babylon. When Daniel is taken away he is probably around 15 years of age. Now in Daniel chapter 2 King Nebuchadnezzar has a crisis. Nebuchadnezzar has some nightmares that really trouble him. In one of his dreams he sees a giant image of a human in which a stone from Heaven strikes its feet and the image is destroyed. The stone that strikes the image becomes a great mountain and it fills the earth. Nebuchadnezzar calls in the Wisemen of the day and he wants them to tell him the dream and the meaning of the dream. When Daniel tells the King his dream he sees an enormous image. The image is a human being with head of gold. Daniel not only gives the description of what the King saw in his dream but he gives the interpretation of the dream. The King's dream foretold the future of Gentile world kingdoms from Nebuchadnezzar's Kingdom up until the second coming of Christ.

The Babylonian Banquet

Nebuchadnezzar was the King of Babylon when Daniel was young. Nebuchadnezzar attacked Jerusalem around 605 BC and took Daniel away from his homeland along with other captives, back to Babylon. Their captivity occurred around 605 BC. Previous in Israel's history the Jewish Nation had been divided into two kingdoms, the Northern Kingdom and the Southern Kingdom but both Kingdoms fell into sin and so God used other nations to judge them. The Northern Kingdom was attacked by Assyria and the Southern Kingdom, which was called Judah was attacked by the Babylonians. Now if we go back to Daniel 1 a test came for Daniel as a teenager in Babylon in the Kings Palace V8, a test that involved the Kings food and drink. Dan 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. There was something about the Kings food and drink, that if it was taken by Daniel it was going to cause spiritual corruption. I believe that if Daniel obeyed Government orders in partaking of the Kings Food and drink then not only would there be spiritual corruption, but there would have been mental and physical corruption as well. Three years of Babylonian Brain washing was an attempt to turn God fearing Jews into Brainwashed Babylonians and part of this Brainwashing was to make them consume that which was defiled. Daniel would not be conformed to the Babylonian World in defiling himself. If the majority sold out to sin, Daniel would not.

The Prodigal's Father

Now being Father's Day this Sunday, I thought it would be good to briefly look at the character of our Father in Heaven. For some people today is a great day for them as they either remember their dad or celebrate with their dad today. There are some here that have had incredible dads who have been a real blessing in their lives. But for others Father's Day is not a pleasant day for them, as the memories of their dad or even their relationship with their dad now is not pleasant. There are those listening to me today whose Fathers have only brought them grief and trauma and trials and trouble to their lives. There are some perhaps today who may even despise their dads on this Father's Day because of what their dads have done. No matter what type of Father we have had, I need to say that there is one Father who is perfect… that there is one Father that will never let you down and that is, God the Father who is in Heaven. The Creator of the whole Universe wants to be your Father. When the Lord Jesus came to this Earth He wanted people to know what God the Father was like. No human being apart from Jesus knew God as intimately as He did. Jesus knew God so well because He had spent all eternity with Him. The Parable of the Prodigal Son was told by Jesus to the Scribes and Pharisees of His day. You know the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15 he takes his inheritance, goes to a far country and squanders it all away. The Prodigal Son ends up starving, He realizes that he had sinned against God and his father and so starts on the journey home hoping to get a job as a servant at his fathers house. What a shock the Prodigal got when he gets near home.

Daniel is a book for the times that we are living in. Daniel is both a personal book and a prophetic book. When I say Daniel is a personal book it is because we get a personal glimpse into the life of one of the greatest characters in the Bible, Daniel. In the Book of Daniel we get a look at his life, starting as a teenager right up to when he is an old man and as we view Daniel's life we see a life of integrity and life of faithfulness. 2. Daniel is a Prophetic Book: The Book of Daniel contains visions and dreams that point to the future. Daniel was a prophet used by God to reveal the future. Dan 1:17 … Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. In Daniel Chapter 1 Daniel faces a test in regards to the King's food. Saying no to the King could have brought the death sentence to Daniel but God protected him. Today like never before we need more Daniels who stand for truth and righteousness in an ungodly world.

Psalm 23 was perhaps written when David was a King. Psalm 23.1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. As David thought about God he sees God as his Shepherd. David was well acquainted with shepherding and sheep for as a boy he cared for his father's flock. David was not the only one to think of the Lord as a shepherd. Moses considered the Lord as shepherd as well (Genesis 49.24). Have you ever thought how we are like sheep? In the Middle East Sheep were completely dependent on their Shepherd and sheep in Australia are still dependent on their farmers. Ps 23.1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. David knew God as His Personal Shepherd: Sheep in the Middle East were dependent on the Shepherds to lead them to food and water for their survival. Not only does the Shepherd give REFRESHMENT to his sheep but the Shepherd gives his sheep REST. When the World is in Turmoil God's people can still have rest in Him. David knew God as His Personal Shepherd: David knew God as His Personal Provider: He gives refreshment and rest to His people. David knew God as His Personal Saviour:

Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. As of this Sunday and we don't know for exactly how long the NSW Government has decided that every place of worship in the entire State of NSW is now closed to the Public. Today on Sunday the 15th of August it is illegal to gather as believers in Jesus Christ together to worship the Lord, hear the Word and encourage one another across our State. This means that today, people who wish to gather for prayer, preaching and fellowship in Churches are forbidden to do so in NSW. This ban is because of the Coronavirus in our State. Worship centers are closed by Law but Wine Shops are open. Our Tabernacle must remain closed but the Tobacconist can open. Never in our history have all the established Churches in our State been shut? Today is a first, in a couple of hundred years. Not once in our history has the Government mandated that every Church door in this State be shut on a Sunday. This Nation is in need of a Miracle. This Nation needs prayer… like never before. We have a much greater disease afflicting our nation than the Corona-virus, it is the disease of sin and rebellion against the God who made us. Our Prime Minister should be calling our Nation to look to the Maker of the World, rather than the Merchants of the World for Healing and Protection.

Gone (The Rapture)

In I Thessalonians 4 Paul reveals to the Christians at Thessalonica the great hope of the rapture of the church. One day before our world experiences the terrible time called the Tribulation Period God will remove His people from this earth instantaneously. God's people, born again Christians may soon be GONE in the Rapture. In the Tribulation Period God is going to pour out His anger on a sin filled, unbelieving World that is ripe for Judgement. Jesus Himself mentioned the Tribulation Period In Matthew 24. Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. The Second Coming of Christ occurs after the Tribulation Period. Matt 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. If you read Revelation 6-19 you will see the details of the Tribulation Period of 7 years, but the church is gone as we are not subject to the judgement of God that will fall upon the earth. 1 Thess 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

The Deceptive Donation

As the early Church grew the Christians gave to the work of the ministry but a husband and wife were deceptive in how they gave resulting in their deaths. God can judge believers with sickness and even death. Their judgement brought fear to those that heard about their deaths.

Encouragement

In Acts Chapter 4 we meet a man called Barnabas. Barnabas is mentioned by name 28 times in the New Testament. The first time we meet Barnabas in the Bible is in Acts 4. Barnabas's real name was Joses. The apostles recognized that this man had such a ministry of encouragement that they nicknamed him Barnabas which means Son of Encouragement. I think a Barnabas ministry is possible for any believer, we can all be encourages. Actually the Bible indicates that we all are to build each other up. What a blessing a ministry of encouragement is. Not only was he known for his encouragement, Barnabas was also known for his generosity.

Courage

In the Book of Acts we see wonderful courage displayed in the face of opposition. I believe that the Church of Jesus Christ in Australia will need to exhibit Courage for Christ like never before, as the world accelerates quickly towards the end times, before Jesus returns. Our world is now accelerating very fast towards the end time Tribulation Period outlined in the Bible and we will need to be increasingly courageous until believers in Christ are taken home at the Rapture of the Church. Today if you are a godly disciple of Jesus and you want to win the lost then you can expect persecution and you will need courage. Right now people are being persecuted for their faith around the world and we need to pray for them and their persecutors.

In Acts Chapter 3 Peter and John go up to the Temple at the hour of prayer where they meet a man who had been cripple for over 40 years. Here was a Lame man from birth who received a miracle that changed his life and this miracle and this man's testimony, gave Peter and John the opportunity to speak to numbers of people. Peter spoke about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and thousands of people ended up being converted to Christ. This man had absolutely no ability in himself to enter the place of worship back then unless there was a miracle. This man would be forever locked out of the Temple unless there was a miracle. You know we can see some great spiritual truths when you study the MIRACLES in the Bible. In the days of the Apostles, God demonstrated His power to heal and do incredible things in a special way through the Apostles, to authenticate their ministry and message. You and I can never enter Heaven unless there is a miracle because we are spiritually crippled. In our natural state we cannot walk with God. In our natural sinful state we have no right to enter Heaven and we are completely unable to enter Heaven unless there is a miracle. Before my conversion I could not walk right, before my conversion I could not talk right, before my conversion I could not love right, before my conversion I could not worship right but Jesus did a miracle for this spiritually crippled man when I understood the Gospel. Now I can walk in the Spirit….. Is that your story? The crippled man laying by the Beautiful Gate as a beggar received his miracle and entered in through the Beautiful Gate into the Temple with Peter and John.

Why Church? (Part 2)

When you study Acts you see that the early believers placed a great importance on meeting regularly together. I believe each Christian should be convinced and convicted of the necessity to be regularly meeting with other believers. 1. When you go to Church then you are a witness to others. When you are in Church, you are saying to a lost world that worshipping God and being with my brothers and sisters in Christ is of supreme importance to me. 2. You should be in Church regularly because we are called to Pray with others. Every Sunday we can do this together. Corporate prayer is important in the life of the Church. 3. You should be in Church regularly is that there is no present day organisation on earth that is more important than the Church. 4. Church is the only institution on earth that wages war against sin and supernatural wickedness with spiritual power. 5. Throughout the ages, Spiritual gifts have been discovered, deployed and displayed in many cases within the Church context. 6. You should be in Church every Sunday is that we are called of God to praise the Lord together as a Body. 7. You should be in Church every Sunday is so that we can hear the Word. 8. We all need fellowship. At Church and after Church you have the opportunity for fellowship. 9. You should be in Church every Sunday so you can participate in mission. 10. You should be in Church every Sunday because Jesus is Coming. Heb 10.25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Make sure you are in a true Church because there are many false churches in the world.
