Reasons for Discipleship

Is following Jesus just a matter of blind emotion, or is there a logical, reasonable basis for a life of devotion? In this final session of the Truth Defended conference, discover how to move beyond simple "intuition" into a robust, biblical faith. Using the "REDI" reasoning model of the Apostle Paul, this message explores why discipleship is the most rational response to the Gospel. In this message, you will learn: The Four Sources of Knowledge: How to balance senses, reason, intuition, and authority without falling into "mysticism" or "rationalism." Paul's Reasoning Toolkit: A breakdown of Reckonism, Exegeticism, Deductionism, and Inductivism. The Goal of the Disciple: What it truly means to "know Him" through the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings. Dying to Self: Why "dying daily" is a logical necessity for experiencing God's "dynamite" power. Stop "rationalizing" your walk with God and start grounding it in the reasonable truth of Philippians 3.

The Scouting Report: Luke 6 Jesus didn't just pick names out of a hat. He spent an entire night in fervent prayer before "drafting" twelve ordinary, imperfect people to change the world. In this message, we explore three ways to move from the sidelines to the game: Pray with Diligence: Discover why Jesus sought out "private closets" and mountain-tops before every major decision. Practice Discipleship: Learning that being a follower means more than just showing up—it's about daily "spiritual formation" and individual practice. Preach with Dedication: Drawing inspiration from the original Twelve, who took the message to the ends of the earth, often at the cost of their lives. "Which Disciple are You?" > Join our Scattered Groups this week to take our exclusive personality assessment! Are you a bold Peter, a quiet Andrew, or a courageous Thaddeus? Find out where you fit on the team.

The sermon's main point is that God is writing a Book of Remembrance for every life, recording all words and deeds. It contrasts the wicked, who complain against God and reverse morality, with the righteous, who fear the Lord and speak of Him often. Referencing Malachi 3:16-17, the speaker assures that God remembers the faithful and will claim them as His special treasure. This book is a record for eternal rewards for believers, separate from salvation, which is attained only through faith in Jesus Christ, whose name is recorded in the Lamb's Book of Life.

We cannot truly worship God if we are unfaithful to Him. Find three ways to avoid spiritual infidelity. If teamwork makes the dream work, then married couples should catch the dream God has in mind for their marriage and work together to achieve it. The sermon, drawn from Malachi 2, confronts the spiritual adultery of God's people through the metaphor of marital unfaithfulness, illustrating how the Israelites' divorce of their wives and marriage to pagan women symbolized their deeper abandonment of God. It emphasizes that true worship requires exclusive devotion to God, warning against the idolatry of materialism, self-centeredness, and redefined morality that characterize a culture weary of God. The central call is to 'take heed to your spirit'—to daily guard one's heart, prioritize prayer and Scripture, and cultivate a genuine relationship with God, rejecting false gods and renewing covenantal faithfulness in all relationships. The message is both convicting and hopeful, urging repentance, spiritual vigilance, and intentional commitment to God's design for life and love, grounded in the truth that God is one, the Creator, and the source of all worth and purpose.

Be encouraged and challenged from John 20-21 as the ministry of Jesus to His disciples is elaborated on. The presence of the Holy Spirit, the peace of God, and the specific path God has for each believer are the next steps you can realize and take in your walk with Jesus.

The conclusion of the Psalter's fourth book (Psalm 106:47-48) shifts the focus from Israel's history of rebellion to a present-day prayer of hope and praise, confirming that broken people are healed by the Lord. The prayer, sung in exile, is a cry for the Healing of Salvation (yāšaʿ—the root of Jesus/Yeshua) and the Healing of Gathering (qābaṣ) from among the heathen (Gôy). The purpose of this gathering is fourfold: to give thanks, to be set apart, to experience triumph (soothing rest in Christ's victory), and to sing His praise. The Psalm closes with the final, eternal Doxology where the people pronounce God "Blessed" (bāraḵ—literally, to kneel), confessing that He alone is the ultimate Healer of the soul's wound, worthy of praise "from everlasting to everlasting," which all the people affirm by saying "Amen. Praise ye the LORD."

The final verses of Psalm 106 offer a historical summary and a message of restoration, showing that broken people are offered a second chance despite their cycles of sin. The text details the consequences of Israel's rebellion, which led to God abhorring (tāʿaḇ) His own inheritance, allowing them to be ruled (māšal) and oppressed (lāḥaṣ) by their enemies as a result of their iniquity. Though God had to repeatedly deliver (nāṣal) them, the cycle of rebellion persisted. Nevertheless, the Psalm pivots to the Mercy Factor: God regarded (rāʾâ) their affliction, remembered (zāḵar) His covenant with Abraham, and repented (nāḥam)—or relented from wrath—due to the multitude of His mercies. The Psalm concludes with a final prayer for gathering and a glorious Doxology (Hālāl), calling the broken people to praise God for His everlasting goodness and covenantal loyalty, urging them to rebound to Him in confession and repentance.

6. Broken People ANSWER to the Lord

This chapter highlights the inevitable consequences of both sin and righteous suffering, asserting that broken people answer to the Lord. Through a series of escalating rebellions in Israel (Psalm 106:28-39), the text illustrates the progression of sin: from spiritual infidelity and cultic immorality with Baal-peor, to the gruesome practice of child sacrifice, to the insurgency that provoked Moses into a costly act of disobedience at Meribah. The ultimate failure was insubordination—the refusal to destroy the wicked Canaanite nations as commanded, leading to mingling, learning, and serving their idols, which became a snare (môqēš) and spiritual adultery (zānâ). To move from sin to righteousness, the believer must apply course correction through decisive intervention (like Phinehas), earnest intercession (like Moses and Aaron), and diligent introspection (self-examination) to ensure their life aligns with God's will before the day of final account. Please pray, give, and participate in the life of the church.

5. Broken People Obey The Lord

🚶 The Doxology of Broken People: Obedience and Disbelief This section addresses the tragic failure of the Israelites to enter the Promised Land, emphasizing that broken people obey as an outflow of true faith. The sin was a progression beginning with disbelief of God's Word, leading them to despise (māʾas) the "pleasant land" (ḥemeḏ) by focusing on the giants rather than God's power. Their faithlessness escalated into murmuring (rāḡan) and national mutiny, culminating in a refusal to "hearken not" (šāmaʿ or Shema) to the voice of the Lord—refusing to hear with the intent to obey. The consequence was severe: God swore that the entire disbelieving generation would perish (nāp̄al) and be overthrown in the wilderness, with a future warning of national scattering (zārâ). For believers today, obedience flows from accepting God's gift (salvation), believing God's Word, affirming God's will, and listening for God's voice with an intent to act, mirroring the faith of Caleb and Joshua.

This passage confronts the profound sin of idolatry, a tendency to exchange (mûr) the invisible, eternal glory (kāḇôḏ) of the living God for a visible, tangible substitute, as Israel did with the Golden Calf at Mount Horeb. Their sin was a deliberate act of forgetfulness of God their Savior (yěšûʿâ) and His miraculous works in Egypt. In response to God's fierce wrath, the narrative pivots to the power of intercession (Psalm 106:23). Moses stood "in the breach" (pereṣ), placing himself between God and the wicked nation. His prayer is a model for broken people, as he appealed not to the people's merit, but entirely to God's Power, Prestige, and Covenant Promise. As a result, the LORD "repented" (nāḥam), demonstrating the profound truth that prayer can move God and is the means by which the story of broken people is redeemed.

3. Broken People Wait On The Lord

The Doxology of Broken People: The Discipline of Waiting This study focuses on the discipline of waiting on the Lord as a daily challenge for broken people, contrasting it with the endemic modern sin of impatience. Using the history of Israel in the wilderness (Psalm 106:13-18), the text identifies the root causes of impatience as forgetfulness of God's past works and unchecked lust or intense craving (taʾăvāh taʾăvāh). This selfish desire leads to spiritual leanness (rāzôn) even when the demand is granted. Furthermore, envy (qānāʾ) of others' positions, as seen in the rebellion of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, drives impatience and demands. The severe judgment God brought upon the rebels serves as a warning that submission to God's timing is critical. To successfully wait on God, broken people must remember the past (be reflective), remain in the present (be content), and rely on God's counsel (be intentional) through His Word and prayer.

2. Broken People Believe the Lord

This chapter of The Doxology of Broken People shifts focus from the initial call to praise to the absolute necessity of belief, even after salvation. Using Psalm 106 as a mirror, the text chronicles Israel's immediate failure to sustain faith following the miraculous deliverance at the Red Sea, a failure rooted in a chosen forgetfulness and lack of spiritual understanding. Despite their rebellion, God saved them for His own "name's sake" (reputation and covenant promise) and to display His mighty power (gĕbūrāh). The deliverance was an act of redemption (pādāh), buying them back from the enemy, which temporarily confirmed their belief (āman). The lesson for "broken people" is that a believing heart is maintained by actively and consciously remembering His salvation, recalling His power, and reflecting on His redemption daily to prevent the sin of forgetfulness. *Error: God told Moses to tell Pharoah he was lifted up for this moment in history to demonstrate God's power; Exodus 9:16 is not about God lifting up Moses as misrepresented in this message.

1. Broken People Praise the Lord

he text introduces the concept of "The Doxology of Broken People," asserting that humanity is universally broken and in need of Jesus Christ, but is nonetheless called to praise God. A doxology, from the Greek doxa (glory/praise) and logia (word), is a word of praise offered to God. This theme is embodied in the Book of Psalms, a "songbook for the broken." Specifically, Psalm 106 is highlighted as a Historical Psalm and an example of national repentance that begins with praise for God's eternal goodness and mercy (ḥesed). It calls for a life that gives thanks, takes responsibility for sin, and looks for God daily by rejoicing in the corporate worship and goodness of His people. The Psalmist's confession of failure is paired with a profound, Christ-centered prayer for Salvation (Yeshûʿāh), recognizing that hope is found not in human effort but in Christ alone.

This section, based on Titus 3:9-15, provides Paul's closing instructions for maintaining church unity and focus by contrasting profitable action with worthless dissension. It mandates a strategy of avoidance toward "foolish controversies" that are spiritually empty, while requiring discipline against a divisive person (heretic), who must be warned twice before being rejected as self-condemned. The ultimate antidote to internal conflict is to pivot the community's energy toward tangible good works—such as supporting missionaries and meeting urgent needs—which serves as the unifying mission and the true measure of active, effective partnership in the Gospel.

7. Good Works

This section of Titus addresses the role of good works after establishing salvation by mercy alone, insisting that grace is a starting line, not a dead end. Paul commands leaders to "constantly affirm" the trustworthy message of salvation to ensure good works are always the fruit of faith, thereby preventing both legalism and the view that works are unnecessary (antinomianism). Believers are called to be "careful to maintain good works," meaning their devotion must be intentional, diligent, and active in all areas of life. This dedication to good deeds is both "good and profitable" because it is intrinsically beautiful (Kalos) as evidence of faith and externally beneficial (Ophelimos) to the community, fulfilling the divine purpose for which believers were saved.

6. Good Mercy

This chapter provides the Gospel foundation for "good works," stressing that ethical behavior flows from God's mercy, not from a desire to earn His favor. It first mandates Christians to be model citizens—submissive to authority, ready for service, and exhibiting gentleness and courtesy toward all people, avoiding slander and quarreling. This conduct is driven by the humble remembrance of our past depravity (being foolish, disobedient, and enslaved to passions). The theological pivot then highlights that salvation is entirely by God's mercy, not by any works of righteousness we have done, achieved through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit. Because God's kindness has delivered us and justified us by His grace, we are compelled to reflect that love and goodness back into the world as good citizens.

5. Good Grace

This message culminates Paul's teaching on the Good Life, shifting from the responsibilities of the church to the source of transformation: God's grace. Paul asserts that the appearance of "the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men" (Titus 2:11) is the true and complete basis for Christian living, not human effort. This saving grace has a two-fold purpose: it is didactic (it teaches), instructing believers to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts; and it is motivating (it drives), training us to live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present world as we await the "blessed hope"—the glorious return of Jesus Christ. The chapter emphasizes that Christ's sacrificial death was for the specific purpose of redeeming us from all lawlessness and purifying a people for himself who are "zealous of good works" (Titus 2:14), thus directly connecting God's divine action to the believer's practical, ethical living.

4. The Good Mentors

This message shifts the focus of the Good Life from personal character to discipleship, establishing that faith is a collaborative effort built on mutual mentorship and the application of sound doctrine to daily life. Paul instructs Titus to "speak thou the things which become sound doctrine" and then model how those truths apply to every demographic in the church. This intergenerational mentorship is detailed across three groups: Men, where older men are called to be patterns of stability (sober, grave, temperate) and to exhort young men to be sober-minded and models of good works; Women, where older women are to exhibit holiness (not slanderers or enslaved to wine) and teach younger women domestic and relational virtues (to love their husbands and children, be discreet, and keepers at home) so "the word of God be not blasphemed;" and Workers (employees), who are to be obedient, well-pleasing, and faithful to their employers to "adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour." The chapter emphasizes that believers must engage in this relational triangle—having a mentor (Paul), an accountability partner (Barnabas), and a mentee (Timothy)—to ensure that sound doctrine is consistently lived out and passed on to the next generation.

3. The Good Mind

This message addresses the corrupted mind as the great threat to the Christian's Good Life, immediately following the instruction for good preaching and good preachers. Paul warns Titus about unruly, vain talkers and deceivers motivated by "filthy lucre" (greedy gain) who spread false doctrine and subvert whole households, summarizing their condition as having unruly and vain minds, corrupt minds, and finally, reprobate minds—meaning they are disqualified from true good works because their deeds deny their profession of faith. The core issue is diagnosed as a defiled conscience, where the entire perspective of unbelievers is stained by evil thinking, contrasting with the purity of the Christian's mind cleansed by Christ. To cultivate a sound (healthy) mind, believers are instructed to Practice Rebuking Lies "sharply" with sound doctrine to restore spiritual health, and to Practice Renewing Your Mind by replacing the world's empty thoughts with God's truth, thus proving the will of God and protecting the mind with the "helmet of salvation."

2. The Good Men

Following the establishment of "good preaching" as the foundation of the good life, this message shifts focus to the character of the messenger, outlining the strict qualifications Paul gave Titus for ordaining elders (or bishops/pastors) to lead the burgeoning churches on Crete. Paul's blueprint for ministry emphasizes that the effectiveness of the message is directly tied to the integrity of the man; thus, the chosen leader must possess four key attributes. These include Real Skill (administrative ability to "set in order" the lacking aspects of the ministry), a Respectable Home (a model family life where he is "the husband of one wife" with faithful, well-guided children), Responsible Character (a trustworthy disposition, being sober, just, holy, and hospitable while avoiding anger, greed, and self-will), and finally, Reliable Doctrine (intellectual integrity to "hold fast the faithful word" so he can both exhort his people and convince those who contradict the truth). The chapter concludes that the Good Life is built on good preaching, which can only flow from a good man who meets these challenging, God-ordained standards.

1. The Good Word

This message introduces the idea of the Christian life as a "good life," mirroring the realization of George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life that his life had profound value. The foundation for this concept is drawn from the Book of Titus, a brief but powerful pastoral letter from the Apostle Paul to a young leader, where the word "good" is used extensively to describe the standard for every dimension of Christian conduct, from individual character and family life to work and politics. Before one can live well, the chapter asserts, one must first be taught well, establishing the first pillar of the good life as "good preaching." This preaching, defined by the Greek word kērýgma (meaning the message itself, not the act), is the God-ordained channel for making visible and clear the revelation of God's Word to the world, and it must fulfill three vital roles: communicating God's Word through good teaching, revealing God's plan for salvation (being evangelistic), and being essential for faith, as it is the means by which people hear and believe the message of Christ.
